Chapter 29: Purchasing Serfs and Returning to the Territory
Chapter 29: Purchasing Serfs and Returning to the Territory
Inside the room.
Rachos dismissed Ram, and after a lengthy discussion that lasted an hour, Thor emerged from Rachos's presence with a satisfied smile. This time, not only had he acquired a large quantity of flammable oil, but he had also secured a cooperation agreement with Rachos Assad. Despite being an overlooked member of the Assad family, Rachos could still mobilize substantial resources due to his family's commercial background. This new avenue would make future acquisitions much easier for Thor.
As for the issue of smuggling, the kingdom's laws only punished smugglers, not buyers. In a world ruled by nobles, laws were rarely designed to constrain them, and smuggling was often a trade reserved for the wealthy.
The reason Rachos agreed was simple: the promise Thor made was tempting. If Rachos could become a baron within three years, the rewards from establishing this trade route would be immense. Even aside from this, addressing his current situation was reason enough for Rachos to agree. The previous hesitation stemmed from the fact that Thor was from the Dresrosa family and Rachos from the Assad family. However, the allure of the deal outweighed such concerns.
"Ryan, take the gold and thirty knights to the Maple Leaf Estate to retrieve the items," Thor instructed, addressing Rein.
"Understood!"
Ryan nodded quickly.
After giving the instructions, Thor headed towards the Habsburg Chamber of Commerce. He hadn't forgotten his original purpose for the visit. While the flammable oil was a pleasant surprise and would help refine his plans, he still needed to purchase some slaves to ensure everything was in order.
Entering the Habsburg Chamber, Thor was greeted by a cheerful attendant.
"Sir Thor Dresrosa, welcome!" the attendant exclaimed, slightly out of breath but eager.
Thor had spent 120 gold coins during his last visit, making him a valued customer. Even though the attendant had been promoted, he still remembered Thor well.
"Oh, what a coincidence," Thor said with a smile. "I'm here to purchase more serfs. How many do you have available?"
"Sir Thor, we have plenty of slaves. How many do you need this time?" the attendant asked, leading Thor to the lower levels.
With the flicker of crystal lights, rows of slaves appeared.
"This time, I need some stronger ones. The slaves you provided last time were too weak. They couldn't even defeat a small green goblin, and five hundred of them nearly perished," Thor said with a sigh, showing his frustration.
The attendant winced at Thor's criticism, internally cursing the situation.
"Well, Sir Thor, those were already quite strong, but as a valued guest, we will meet your needs. We have a new batch of serfs that are even stronger. They only need some buckwheat daily to survive. They might not handle green goblins well, but they can manage timid goblins. The only issue is the price."
The attendant waved his hand, and soon, new slaves were brought in.
Compared to the previous batch, these slaves were visibly stronger.
"Not bad. How many do you have?" Thor asked with satisfaction.
"Thirty silver coins each. If you buy in bulk, we can offer a discount," the attendant replied cautiously.
"How much of a discount can you offer? My territory has been overrun by pesky green goblins. I need many serfs to clear them out," Thor said with feigned frustration.
Hearing this, the attendant's expression brightened.
"If you purchase five hundred, we can offer them at twenty-eight silver coins each," he said after some thought.
"No, you might not have understood me correctly. I don't need five hundred or a thousand; I need three thousand," Thor clarified.
The attendant's eyes widened in shock, his breathing becoming uneven.
"Three thousand? How much do you want to pay?" he stammered.
"Twenty silver coins each. I'll buy three thousand without further discounts," Thor stated, with a calculated hesitation.
"Please wait!" the attendant exclaimed. "I need to report this."
He quickly left to consult with the Habsburg Chamber's manager. A deal of this size—three thousand serfs at twenty silver coins each, totaling six hundred gold coins—was significant even for the Habsburg Chamber.
The attendant hurriedly reported the news to the manager, who was equally shocked.
The manager soon arrived.
"Respected Sir Thor Dresrosa, we accept your terms," the manager said respectfully. "As a valued guest, we will give you a discount. For three thousand high-quality serfs, you only need to pay five hundred forty gold coins."
"Thank you very much!" Thor replied with a smile, accepting the deal. Saving money was always beneficial, especially when the standard price was ten times higher.
"You are too kind," the manager said. "Do you have any other needs?"
"Not at the moment. I will return if I need anything else," Thor replied with a smile.
"By the way, Sir Thor, there will be an auction in Loren City three months from now. Valuable life potions will be auctioned. If you have time, please attend," the manager added, offering an invitation.
"An auction in three months?" Thor said, showing interest. "Thank you for the information. If I'm free, I'll definitely attend."
Thor didn't refuse the invitation. With access to a daily information system, attending the auction might present a chance to find something valuable.
