Chapter 27: On Promises, Thor is a Professional
Chapter 27: On Promises, Thor is a Professional
On the western side of Loren City, in a sizable house, Rachos Assad was pacing back and forth, his face filled with worry.
As a descendant of the Assad family, being an illegitimate child meant he did not receive much attention from the family. Even his father, the current head of the Assad family, did not like this son born unexpectedly from a maid.
Even though Rachos Assad became an apprentice knight before turning eighteen, his situation remained unchanged.
He didn’t get the opportunity to serve the family loyally.
Nor did he get to be in charge of various Assad caravans like his siblings.
He only had a small shop in Loren City.
Good heavens, it was Loren City.
Never mind that it was located in the recently developed and impoverished Northern Province.
Even the shop was pitifully small.
Frankly, he was extremely unwilling.
But what could he do? He didn't have the courage to become a pioneering knight.
So, he had no choice but to follow the family's orders and go to Loren City to take over that small shop.
However, upon accepting reality and arriving in Loren City, he found the situation even more difficult than he had imagined.
The entire commerce of Loren City was almost monopolized by the Habsburg Chamber of Commerce.
Selling supplies was nearly impossible for him.
In half a year, he had almost exhausted the gold coins he brought, yet the shop’s revenue still amounted to only a few dozen silver coins.
At this rate, forget about running the business well, even surviving was going to be a huge problem.
Thus, three months ago, when he discovered that the entire Northern Province seemed to lack some special supplies, he had a bold idea: smuggling some special supplies into the Northern Province to sell.
Especially military supplies.
Given the crisis in the Northern Province, those items should sell well.
Coincidentally, the Assad family was engaged in trade, and even though he was not highly regarded, he was still the son of the current head of the Assad family. Getting some items wasn’t too difficult.
With the idea in mind, he naturally took action.
His first target was flammable oil.
Compared to other military supplies, flammable oil wasn’t very expensive and was more practical.
It could be used in various environments.
In his view, ten pounds of flammable oil cost him about ten silver coins from the family, and he could sell it for fifty to a hundred silver coins in the Northern Province—at least ten times the price.
More importantly, due to the special nature of flammable oil, it could be mixed with ordinary water, extracted upon arrival in Loren City, thus avoiding border patrol checkpoints.
Indeed, it was as he expected.
Seven days ago, the first batch of flammable oil was transported over.
Three days ago, he had already extracted the flammable oil.
But at this point, a problem arose.
Finding a suitable buyer.
Yes, a suitable buyer.
He thought flammable oil would be in high demand.
But that was just his assumption.
In reality, buyers were hard to find.
Especially a trustworthy trading partner—an even greater challenge.
Smuggling supplies, especially such critical ones, was no joke if exposed.
Had he been a noble, it would be different. Unfortunately, he wasn't, and he would definitely end up on the gallows. His father likely wouldn’t save him either.
At this moment, he regretted being too impulsive.
His figure continued pacing.
The worry on his face remained.
After a while, Rachos Assad finally looked at the knight attendant beside him.
That was one of his few most loyal knight attendants.
"Ram, is that person really trustworthy?"
He spoke with a hint of concern.
"My lord, that person is trustworthy!"
"Moreover, he doesn’t have a noble title, and his backing is merely a baron. Even if it gets exposed, we can deny it. No one can prove those items are from us, and no one can prove those items are flammable oil, right?"
Ram spoke respectfully.
"Indeed!"
Hearing Ram's words and thinking about his own preparations, Rachos couldn't help but relax a bit.
But just as he was relaxing.
A servant quickly ran over.
"Master, Knight Thor Dresrosa requests to meet with you!"
The servant spoke respectfully and then handed over a note.
"Thor Dresrosa?"
"From the Dresrosa family?"
Rachos Assad was taken aback, frowning slightly in confusion.
He was well aware of his family’s situation. The Dresrosa family was not very friendly with them.
The sudden visit from a member of the Dresrosa family puzzled him.
"Let him in!"
"Prepare the room!"
Rachos Assad frowned for a moment but eventually nodded.
Noble etiquette prevented him from refusing.
He was also curious about the purpose of this visit.
Soon, Thor and Ryan were ushered into the room by the servant.
"Honorable Rachos Assad, I apologize for the intrusion. Here is a small gift, please don't mind."
Thor spoke with a smile, signaling Ryan to present a wooden box.
The servant received it and handed it to Rachos Assad.
"Knight Thor Dresrosa, you are too kind!"
Rachos Assad smiled and casually opened the box, intending to close it as usual.
But upon seeing the contents, his actions froze.
His pupils dilated instantly.
"Bang!"
The box fell, and he stood up abruptly, his expression shifting as he looked at Thor.
"You!"
Instinctively, he spoke, but words failed him momentarily.
"Lord Rachos, no need to be nervous. I am here to discuss business, nothing else."
Thor's gentle voice sounded, his demeanor still calm and smiling.
Seeing Thor's smile.
Rachos Assad took a deep breath, suppressing his panic and tension. He waved his hand, signaling everyone to leave.
Once everyone left the room, he turned his gaze to Thor.
"Business, Knight Thor Dresrosa, this doesn’t look like a way to discuss business."
He spoke with a low tone, a hint of coldness, his eyes showing a glimmer of ferocity.
"No, no!"
"Lord Rachos, you misunderstood!"
"I mentioned I came for business, and it indeed is business."
"For instance, I can buy five hundred pounds of that item."
