Chapter 52: Atonement: Pales (I)
The second time he was injected with the fluid containing the God of Order’s egg hurt much less than the first time, but Tanisiel still shared half of Ethan’s pain like he did before. About ten minutes later, both of them were sweating and had pale faces. However, Ethan felt a lot more relaxed, and it seemed that the fog that had been pressuring him for the past several days had also disappeared.
Their time together was limited. Tanisiel handed him a handkerchief to wipe his sweat and told him, “Fear is a tough emotion to control. I think the only thing you can do is to try to avoid possible danger. As for the matter regarding Mars, I have already arranged it. I kept some of your blood samples that I retrieved from Neptune, so I will just replace your current blood sample with that one, and there will be no problem.”
Ethan nodded before raising his head to look at him. “Are you leaving?”
Tanisiel put on his priest’s robe. Hearing his words, he gave him a faint smile that carried a hint of teasing. “Can’t bear for me to leave?”
“Uh……your narcissistic personality really needs a medical examination……”
The priest was used to the secretary’s mouth that was always reluctant to speak the truth. He just leaned over to kiss Ethan on the cheek and said, “I will arrange for you to visit Mars as soon as possible so you can assist with the experiment.” Then, he hurried out of the door to the medical room.
Ethan realized that the priest had forgotten to take his white handkerchief. He looked at the ordinary cloth in his hand in a daze before folding it carefully and stuffing it in his pocket.
Ethan was interrogated by several guards. He didn’t tell them about any of the strange things he saw in the subway station. Still, an older guard nicknamed Old John, who had been in the Forbidden City for a long time, obviously knew something and repeatedly asked him if he had seen anything strange in the subway station. However, he insisted that he didn’t.
Old John looked at him suspiciously for a while before telling the other two lower-ranked guards to find some nonhumans to seal the hole to the subway station. After the others left, Old John said, “Some places have been abandoned for a long time, which will allow certain dirty things to grow. I’m afraid that these things will stay on Earth longer than humans will. You really should go to the gatherings so that you will know what I’m talking about.” Then, he left, leaving Ethan astonished.
Even Old John, a veteran guard, had joined Chen Zeng’s Lord Grace Association?
Ethan decided that regardless of whether or not he believed in it, he would attend the gathering next week, so at least he would learn about what they believed in.
After the short time he spent lost in the tunnel, Samuel found someone to beat up the nonhuman who had deliberately assigned him to work in the depths of the pipelines. As a result, all the nonhumans in the East area came to know that Ethan had regained Samuel’s favor, and no one dared to make things difficult for him again. The chief security officer also smuggled in some inhibitors for Samuel and Ethan, both Alpha camouflaging inhibitors and Omega camouflaging inhibitors that Ethan asked for, which they found hidden in a specific toilet tank in the canteen’s bathroom. Ethan put them in his trousers’ pockets and quietly made a few trips to bring them back to their apartment. The reason why he needed the Omega camouflaging inhibitors was because Chen Zeng’s men had temporarily banned the transportation of inhibitors and camouflaging inhibitors to the Forbidden City, so he could no longer use the excuse of using inhibitors to explain why he wasn’t going into heat.
Ethan hid in the apartment for three days, spraying the Omega pheromones on himself and Samuel. Samuel still refused to risk releasing his pheromones even once, which worried Ethan.
Although the chief security officer had told Gray Fur there was no need to notice the dirty things happening between the prisoners, he knew that the other party was not a very obedient subordinate. Gray Fur was much older than the chief security officer. He has long since been dissatisfied with how the younger generation would always give him commands, so he would certainly make a fuss about it.
After thinking about it, the chief security officer thought that Ethan had a point. Given that they didn’t know anything about the other Omegas in the East area, Ethan’s proposal to use Typhoeus in the West area became the optimal choice.
Ethan worked in the pipeline system covering the East and West areas. He had many opportunities to contact people from the West area. He soon found out that Tito was not a faithful lover. He merely liked to “collect” beautiful Omegas to show off his authority in the Forbidden City, especially when the Forbidden City was a place extremely short on Omegas. Typhoeus had attracted his attention for the longest time, but he had been mainly indifferent to Typhoeus during the last two months and had even beaten him several times.
Ethan instinctively felt disgusted when he heard this. For an Alpha to beat an Omega was originally a disgusting act. Moreover, Typhoeus and Ethan were acquaintances from the Energy Bureau. He could not imagine the once arrogant man now being bullied wantonly. He thought of the way he had rescued Typhoeus from Gray Fur…… The Forbidden City was a place where people fell from grace.
He was very glad that he was a Beta and had been assigned to Samuel’s dormitory as soon as he arrived.
Ethan mentioned the matter to Samuel, who in turn passed it on to the chief security officer. Schneider said he would deal with it.
Later, Ethan learned that Schneider’s so-called dealing with it was truly brilliant. He had transferred a nonhuman female Omega named Copperhead, who had just arrived to the East area, to the West area. Tito immediately became interested in that Omega. After all, that Omega was younger and more beautiful than Typhoeus and had belonged to another Alpha. For an Alpha, who had the strongest desire to conquer, the fact that he could make someone else’s partner his was enough to make him feel like he had climaxed.
Typhoeus quickly fell out of favor, and his personal safety was in danger. At this point, the chief security officer transferred him to the East area.
Typhoeus was obviously frightened by this move because the East area was Gray Fur’s territory.
What he didn’t know, however, was that Schneider assigned him to the small building where Ethan and Samuel lived, and his room was diagonally opposite the rooms of Ethan and Samuel. That night, in front of the many people who had not slept, Samuel passed through the corridors to go directly into Typhoeus’s room, driving another Beta out of the room before he locked the door.
Some cast their sympathetic gazes at Ethan, while others boasted. Rumors spread that Ethan would soon be out of favor again.
However, Ethan knew that Samuel was merely striking a deal with Typhoeus. The last time he saved Typhoeus, he had met Samuel and knew that he and Ethan were together. It took about an hour for Samuel to come out of the room, and he returned to their room with his clothes fresh and proper.
“How did it go?”
“He agreed.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I could provide him with comprehensive protection, but he had to tell anyone who asked him that we had been cheating on Tito since two months ago, ever since Tito left for the atonement mission. He came to the East area through the underground pipes in the middle of the night, and I took him to this building. He was afraid that Tito would trouble him at first, but he agreed to my conditions after getting my assurance. It’s probably because he trusts you.”
Ethan asked, “Did you tell him about your identity as an Omega?”
“No. But he did ask for the reason, so I just told him that he didn’t need to know. So long as he obediently pretends to be my Omega, I won’t make a move against him.”
Ethan knew that Typhoeus was a smart man and would guess it sooner or later. However, for now, this was the best situation.
“It’s just that I may have to leave you in the lurch for a while,” Samuel said with a smirk.
Ethan was used to showing the beautiful whites of his eyes to Samuel. “That is most welcomed.”
When the news spread that Samuel had a new favorite, Ethan was cautious and kept a low profile. Although he received several dirty insults, he did not encounter any intense hostility. He also began to punctually attend the gatherings for the Lord Grace’s Association in the sewers. He uneasily found that the organization had expanded rapidly and that the bank was now a little too small to contain them.
At the same time, some of Chen Zeng’s “preachings” made him somewhat uneasy. For example, he said that although the current government was completely rotten to the core, at least the harsh punishment for a homosexual Omega’s promiscuity was still desirable. Ethan raised his hand and carefully asked him, “Didn’t you support same-sex marriage previously?”
Chen Zeng replied, “I support same-sex marriage except for Omegas. After all, fertility is the greatest gift given to Omegas by the Lord. They shoulder the glorious mission of creating life and continuing the human race, but they do not know how to feel grateful for it and do lewd things, neglecting their mission for a moment’s pleasure. This kind of behavior is bound to bring disaster to all of humanity!”
His answer won applause, but Ethan only felt his hair rise from his response.
It was clear that childbearing required the participation of two genders, but it was all being attributed to Omegas. How could so many people support such an illogical answer? And there were also many guards who belong to the civilized world present.
In addition, Chen Zeng’s other preachings always gave him an ominous feeling. What he preached was obviously not the Christian doctrine. He even said that people were born with original sin, so it was natural for them to commit more crimes, and there was no need to punish themselves too much. If you repent sincerely, then you will be forgiven. In fact, they didn’t even need to be very afraid of the great evil gods because evil and good were two sides of the same coin. Just as light couldn’t exist without darkness, there was no good without evil.
He even said that the great evil god was actually the other side of the Lord, God himself.
Obviously, the contents of his preachings had changed. He had gradually transformed his followers’ impressions of the great evil god from the one opposing God to God himself.
This originally went against their orthodox beliefs, but with his slight persuasion and elaboration, it had become a matter of course. There were so many believers, yet none of them raised any objections to him, and they even cheered during his speech, yelling until their mouths were dry with eager eyes. It was like all of them had taken drugs.
They wouldn’t end up praying to the God of Disorder in the end, right? This thought flashed through Ethan’s mind.
Subsequently, Ethan and Samuel took part in a three-point mission. It was basically to clean up a peace monument that was more than 1000 meters tall on Earth, set up when the Earth Union was founded. The motto “absolute freedom is evil” was engraved on its base. The nonhumans hung like spiders in mid-air, scrubbing the metal monument’s surface from top to bottom. Although it looked frightening, compared with Ethan’s previous tasks, it was simply too easy.
After that, Ethan just waited for Tanisiel to take him to Mars.
However, what he waited for turned out not to be a mission to Mars but an eight-point mission. Their numbers were still called out during breakfast and using the fact that each number referred to thirty people, 300 individuals were chosen on the spot. The chief security officer didn’t even ask if anyone was willing to volunteer, and no one was randomly selected. Instead, all 300 people were sent out.
The mission was to provide aid to the Earth Union’s garrison stationed at Pales and assist them in suppressing the local Aborigines’ rioting.
The author has something to say:
Happy New Year~~
T/N: Pales: i realized that pales does not refer to 49 pales, but another planet. More on that will be revealed in the next chapter. Also, sorry for the late chapter post. I’d probably be very busy these few weeks with my assignments, so chapters will be up late.
