Chapter 143: Spiritual Power Depletion
East District.
A dreary gloom hung over the residences untouched by the lacking glow from the noon sun, yet it did nothing to stifle the cultural vibe of the sect in the area.
The moans and groans emanating from the shadows of the residences lent an ambiguous air to a pair of gentleman and lady walking in close proximity, seemingly exchanging flirty glances with each other.
Well… in reality, they were entirely engrossed in their own silent, mental exchange.
“… this method of creating a layer of abstraction over real currency, I call it material distortion.”
Shu Ling regarded Bubai with a knowing smile, her luminous eyes sparkling with wisdom. "Hum. Very similar to the contribution points used by the sect. “
Oh, the book fairy was indeed wise enough to infer a connection.
Bubai averted his gaze from her attractive eyes, his divine sense extending out like a pipe toward the silver-haired beauty’s mind, “Yes, a merit system holds a similar concept, but-”
Bubai’s thoughts were momentarily interrupted as a faint pang of pain severed his concentration. His transmission immediately ended, and he winced.
Shu Ling noticed his discomfort, and she floated even closer. "Fairy Brother, what's wrong?"
Bubai shook his head, trying to mask the discomfort. "Nothing, just... overused, I suppose."
This situation was not entirely unexpected. Like many things, some costs were just hidden, left unmentioned.
Using his divine sense to spy on others may appear easy, but it was obviously never a cost-free effort.
Apart from the standard consumption of green dew to enter the buffed state - the basic criteria to maintain his divine sense, the divine sense also taps into his spirit each time it's utilized, consuming a portion of his spiritual power!
Spiritual power – it’s still hard to find an accurate definition for it given his low-end knowledge, but thanks to the knowledge exchanges with Shu Ling, he managed to form a vague framework of how it works in this world.
From his gathered data, it was supposedly an inherent part of every individual, one of the essences forming the spirit. Typically, mortals go through life without ever perceiving it, leaving its potential untapped.
However, the road of cultivation revolved around this very essence.
The main goal of cultivators was to establish a bridge to their spirit and to plunder Qi, the natural energy of the world, to enhance this very essence, gaining benefits such as longevity and the growth of their mental prowess!
And the first step to building this bridge was entering the foundation establishment realm!
Needless to say, following his advancement to foundation establishment, Bubai’s connection with the spirit granted him the ability to tap into its potential, allowing him to harness his inherent spiritual power reserves.
Unfortunately, his perception of it was still rather vague.
Gauging his exact spiritual reserves was still an ongoing process.
Thus far, he only discerns its depletion when he starts feeling sluggish, but he didn’t dare to test his limits, lest he overdrafts his spiritual power, resulting in damage to his spirit.
All damage to the spirit requires a long process for self-recovery. Heavy damage may even lead to a coma or even death! It was a serious matter.
So, Bubai wasn't willing to put himself at risk, at least not at this juncture.
Of course, though Bubai couldn’t draw an accurate conclusion on the precise magnitude of his spiritual reserves, he was confident it should be greater than that of typical cultivators.
This was probably thanks to the boosts to his spirit from both his transmigration and golden finger.
But regardless of how his spiritual reserves compared to other cultivators, just like others, Bubai still can't circumvent this reserve of spiritual power, no matter the abilities he employs.
It was the bottleneck for his daily cultivation and even the execution of his techniques, such as his control over his true Qi or the utilization of both divine and spiritual senses.
While normal spiritual sense and true Qi manipulation do deplete some energy, their drain seemed to be negligible compared to his ample reserve.
So, he doesn’t really notice the effects until his spiritual power starts waning, causing his control to falter.
On the other hand, employing divine sense was considerably more taxing, particularly when covering larger areas or processing hefty amounts of details.
Previously, replenishing his spiritual power was as simple as basking in the sunlight. So, Bubai had less constraints.
However, with the absence of the sun these days, Bubai’s spiritual reserve replenishment must rely on his own natural recovery or the consumption of green dew, making coping significantly more challenging than before.
This shift is one reason why Bubai opted for old-fashioned physical eavesdropping over the previous wanton reliance on his divine sense. He had to preserve his spiritual power for other matters, such as practicing his divine transmission technique.
Thankfully, the divine transmission technique didn’t have as heavy a toll as his long-range surveillance.
The technique only necessitates control of divine sense within a confined range – usually determined by the distance from the target.
With the fairy’s soft figure almost pressed onto his own, the communication range was naturally very small, resulting in less significant consumption of spiritual power.
Nonetheless, employing divine transmission with such frequency still exacts a toll on his spirit, leaving him drained by their conversation during the walk back. The estimated duration was probably… around an hour?
Honestly, the duration left much to be desired, especially when compared to the young lady besides him.
Shu Ling sighed softly, shaking her head in disapproval. "Fairy Brother, you must learn to control your senses. Waste less on each transmission, and you'll be able to use the transmission technique longer and more covertly. At your level, any elders around would surely notice our little secret."
Bubai forced a smile. “Fairy, I will do my best to improve.”
“Hum, you better.” Shu Ling’s voice rung in his mind, melodious yet authoritative, “Practice the needle picking technique this fairy taught you more. Don’t look down on it just because it has weak combat effectiveness…”
“Though handling objects with your Qi is not as fuel-efficient as utilizing technique or magic tools, it’s a rudimentary basic of the foundation establishment realm. This method also serves as excellent training for refining your control over your senses.”
Bubai nodded, acknowledging his shortcomings in this area. "I understand."
“Hum, listen to this fairy and you can’t go wrong.” Shu Ling smiled, whetting his appetite encouragingly. "Once Fairy Brother has achieved sufficient progress, this fairy will teach you the ropes for both visual and even memory transmission."
“Memory? Is it the same as memory Qi?” Bubai arched a brow.
"Hum, almost.” Shu Ling nodded, “It might seem redundant at first, but there are actually benefits.”
A mischievous glint flashed in Shu Ling’s eyes as she threw Bubai a glance.
With that single look, Bubai found a miniature model of the fairy squeezing its way into his mind!
The live-like model gave him an amorous smile and began to sensually peel away her own robe, commencing the next part of the lecture in a sultry voice.
“Unlike transmission techniques reliant on the medium of Qi, such as our dream transmission technique and the voice transmission technique used by foundation establishment cultivators, divine transmission can't be as easily intercepted and blocked. This already completely subverts the other's use cases."
Enjoying the first-hand experience, Bubai nodded thoughtfully, realizing the strategic advantage of such a technique.
It was like an invasive virus, forcing a pop-up onto other people’s screens.
Clearly, this fairy still hadn’t given up her antics, but this time, even if he didn’t want to see it, he obviously had no choice.
So, Bubai could only say: Merlin’s beard. She’s hot.
When the little fairy completed her little show, Bubai returned to his senses, immediately steering the topic forward with a straight face, "I assume there must be drawbacks to this method."
The Shu Ling in reality threw him an amorous look, but she maintained her propriety, confirming his inquiry with a nod.
"Hum, but it isn’t a cause for alarm. It just requires more spiritual power, and mastery is tougher for someone with pseudo divine sense like us. So, we need to practice more, together."
Well, rather straightforward, but behind these simple words, Bubai could feel the weight of the challenge ahead. "It seems I have a long way to go.”
"Fufufu, indeed. But don’t worry. With this fairy’s guidance, Fairy Brother will achieve the same level as this fairy eventually." Shu Ling gave him a warm smile, her presence radiant and reassuring.
Bubai returned her smile sincerely, appreciating the fairy's willingness to help him grow. "It is Bubai’s fortune to have fairy’s invaluable insights.”
“Hum. Small matter.” Shu Ling emphasized, her eyes sparkling with wisdom. “Of course, I hope Fairy Brother doesn’t forget, this is a mutual exchange.”
“Naturally, but…” Bubai’s gaze drifted towards the tower looming ahead and donned a sheepish smile, "Maybe I will have to make it up to fairy next time.”
Shu Ling pouted, crossing her arms in mock indignation. "After all this fairy did for you, is Fairy Brother really going to leave this fairy hanging again?"
“Fairy, forgive me. I really don’t seem to have a choice this time.” Bubai remarked ruefully, pointing to the three guests standing by his tower
"Fine!" Shu Ling shot him a dissatisfied glare. "This fairy can wait. Humph!"
With a graceful twirl, she dissolved into a shower of iridescent starlight, the shimmering essence dissipating into the air like magic, leaving behind a lingering scent of sandalwood.
“Hey, seems I’ll have to coddle this cute fairy next time.”
Shaking his head with a resigned smile, Bubai turned toward his tower and fixed his expression, his mind already preparing to face the uninvited guests.
As Bubai neared his tower, he set his eyes on the towering figure of a muscular bodybuilder with a mane-like cascade of black hair, camping the entrance of his tower with an air of confidence.
It was his “friend”, Jia Shizi.
Detecting Bubai’s arrival, Jia Shizi’s eyes shot over, a wide grin spreading on his face as his booming voice greeted Bubai enthusiastically, "Hahaha! Brother Mo is finally home! I've been waiting until my neck is long!”
Bubai courteously returned a salute, "Apologies, Bubai made Brother Jia wait. Bubai had matters to handle.”
“Hahaha… no problem, no problem! It’s Shizi’s fault for not notifying brother beforehand!”
Bubai then threw a glance at the two mysterious figures cloaked in baggy robes, their faces obscured by the black silk veils hanging from their wide-brimmed weimao. Hmm… seems to be women?
Bubai couldn't help but raise an eyebrow, turning back to Jia Shizi. "So, what brings Brother Jia to my humble abode?"
“Hahaha!” Jia Shizi laughed heartily, his jovial demeanor filling the air.
"Of course, for a good thing!" he replied, gesturing towards the hooded figures who obediently parted their veils, revealing themselves to be none other than the man’s wife Jia Fei and daughter Jia Wan.
Bubai’s brows furrowed in confusion. Huh? Why are they here?
"This... what does Brother mean?" Bubai asked hesitantly, his gaze flickering between Jia Shizi and the two blonde beauties.
Jia Shizi draped an arm around the shoulders of his wife and daughter, his proposal awakening the devil’s grin on his face, "How does Brother like the sound of having them all to yourself in your own tower?"
Merlin’s beard! For real? This was indeed extremely tempting, but... what’s the catch?
“What does Brother Jia have in mind?” Bubai showed his interest, awaiting the conclusion of the man's proposal.
“I just knew Brother Mo would be interested! Hahaha!” Jia Shizi's laughter reverberated through the space, his chiseled abs trembling with each hearty chuckle.
"As for what Shizi has in mind, doesn’t Brother Mo know? That violet-haired beauty-" Jia Shizi began, but before he could finish his sentence, Bubai interjected firmly, cutting him off. “I'm not interested in trading her.”
The grin on Jia Shizi's face faltered momentarily, replaced by a look of mild dissatisfaction. "Is Brother Mo really that much of a killjoy?"
Bubai shook his head, his gaze steady. "Personal reasons, I really can't. If Brother Jia is really dissatisfied, then Bubai will apologize here..."
Bubai offered solemn bow, but before he could fully lower himself, Jia Shizi's muscular arms swiftly reached out to lift him up. "Hey, Brother Mo, there's no need to be so serious. Haha… If you don't want to, then don't. It's good you are being straightforward."
Bubai offered a wry smile, a hint of relief flickering across his features. "Apologies for ruining the mood. If Brother Jia doesn't have anything else, then Bubai will excuse myself...”
However, Bubai barely took a step when Jia Shizi halted him in his tracks, his hand wrapping firmly around Bubai's shoulder, a grin on his face, "Oh, Brother Mo, I've already brought them. You wouldn't want to make my trip a waste, now would you?"
Bubai's face hardened slightly at the implication, his jaw tightening as he contemplated his next words carefully. "Brother Jia, I said-"
"Yes, I heard Brother Mo loud and clear," Jia Shizi interrupted, his tone understanding. "She, you aren't willing to trade because you hold special feelings for her. That's fine, but you wouldn't dismiss me with the same lame excuse for everyone, right?"
Bubai met the devil’s gaze, a flicker of realization dawning in his eyes as he processed the implications of his words. "Brother means..."
The devil’s grin widened. "I heard you have two maids?"
