Chapter 118: Mysterious Guest
Flowing silver hair, an elegant robe, and starry eyes. Exuding an aura of nobleness, the youthful figure before Bubai struck a familiar chord!
However, there were some subtle changes. Most noticeable was a satchel hanging from her waist, similar to Granny Shu's, though noticeably newer and impeccably preserved.
Despite the slight alterations, Bubai instantly recognized this mysterious guest.
“Shu Ling?!”
Honestly, Bubai hadn’t expected the esteemed guest to be her. After all, he always thought she was just a figment of imagination within the dreams. Now, she stood before him in flesh and blood!
“Fufufu! It’s good that you remember this fairy!” A smile graced Shu Fairy's lips as she nodded approvingly, her lively eyes falling on the box clutched in Bubai's hands. “Is that a gift for this fairy?”
“Er… yes.” Composing himself, Bubai handed the box over. “It’s a small handicraft I made myself.”
Regardless of the guest's identity, the gift was still going to be presented as an offering.
Just that… He wasn’t sure a lively lady would like such a gift.
Indeed, Bubai didn’t expect the guest to be anyone young.
His assumption had been rooted in the belief that anyone deemed to be “esteemed” by the venerable Granny Shu likely also held significant status… a high likelihood of being another old fritter of the sect.
Thus, the gift and fancy speeches he had prepared were tailored to suit such a social occasion...
Well, Shu Fairy was technically Granny Shu, right? For someone her age, a gift like this should appeal to her?
Huh, wait a sec- were they really the same person?
Bubai's attention shifted from the lively young lady eagerly inspecting the contents of the box to the figure of Granny Shu.
His gaze prompted the old lady to open her eyes, a smile on her face as she introduced, “Fufu, she is my great granddaughter, Shu Ling. This old lady hope you two do get along.”
Really her granddaughter? She won’t be a clone or something, right?
“Humph, just some wooden blocks.” Shu Fairy’s grumpy voice drew Bubai’s focus back to her, only to see her pouting with a dissatisfied face.
Uh… as expected, she doesn’t like it. After all, Bubai had an inkling of her true preferences after their interactions thus far...
“Ling’er.” The old lady’s reprimanding voice came from behind, causing Shu Fairy to roll her eyes in response before swiftly stuffing the closed box in her satchel.
With practiced poise, she returned to being a dignified lady with an elegant smile. “Thank you for the gift. This fairy appreciates your thoughtfulness.”
Caught between amusement and resignation, Bubai couldn't help but offer a wry smile, “Fairy didn’t like my gift?”
“Hum- of course not. This fairy will certainly cherish it.” Shu Fairy’s eyes looked toward the old lady, who nodded. “Ling’er. Don’t you also have a gift to give to young Bubai?”
With a reluctant expression, Shu Fairy extended her hand toward Bubai and grumbled, “Give your hand to this fairy.”
Seeing nothing in her hand, Bubai was a bit skeptical, but still extended his own hand, ready to accept the gift.
Was it going to be some valuable cultivation resource? Maybe it would be another dream technique or the next phase of his cultivation method?
Shu Fairy hovered her own unblemished hand above Bubai’s outstretched palm.
Then, under Bubai’s astonished eyes, wooden prayer beads began floating out from her silvery robe’s sleeve, encircling his wrist!
Before Bubai could fully comprehend the enchanting spectacle, the beads were strung together by a mystical silk thread that had materialized from thin air, securely tying the bracelet to his wrist!
Amazingly, there were no Qi fluctuations during the entire process. Instead, everything seemed to be guided by some other unknown force!
This was the first time Bubai personally came into contact with such a mystical method!
“This…” Bubai marveled at the new accessory that had magically appeared on his wrist.
Shu Fairy looked away with a pout on her face, “Hum. Be grateful for this fairy’s gift. This is an expensive heirloom of this fairy’s lineage.”
Heirloom?! Bubai’s expression changed slightly. How could he suddenly receive such a valuable gift?!
The value between their gifts was glaringly disproportionate. The materials to craft his gift only costed some mortal currency.
On the other hand, heirlooms possessed immense intrinsic worth far beyond materialistic measures!
Some bore special functions, while others held sentimental value, priceless and irreplaceable. Often, tens or hundreds of spirit stones can’t buy such a treasure!
Moreover, heirlooms wasn’t something that could be easily bestowed as it carried a very special connotation for the aristocrats of this world…
No way… he won’t be forced to be the son-in-law, right?! He really couldn’t afford it!
“Shu Ling, this gift is too heavy…” Bubai immediately wanted to take off and return the unexpected gift, but his face became stiff when he realized…
He couldn’t take it off! There seemed to be some mysterious force binding the bracelet to his wrist!
“You can stop trying. Even this fairy can’t get it off after putting it on.” Shu Fairy waved her own hand, flaunting the bracelet on her own wrist that mirrored his own. “Don’t worry. It’s not anything harmful. It just allows granny to find us easier.”
With a graceful motion, she concealed the bracelet beneath her sleeves once more before directing her gaze towards the old lady, who now sat with closed eyes and a serene smile.
“Granny said you are being watched by some unsavory characters in the sect, and it was best to keep track of your location, lest you get locked up in some dark dungeon.”
Oh. Bubai understood. So, it was a tracker.
Bubai’s eyes betrayed a flicker of uncertainty but he composed himself not long after.
Her words carried some truth. Compared to them, Bubai harbored an even keener understanding of his own uniqueness. Even with his promotion to Foundation Establishment, he was well aware he still wasn’t in the safe zone.
This was a demonic sect. It wasn’t impossible for powerful clans to kidnap certain geniuses and lock them away.
While Granny Shu could protect him on the surface, he doubts she could deter all of the powerful clans and factions of the sect. Even if she could, would she be willing to do so much for someone who is not her own?
Now, she sent him a clear message by binding him with this strange bracelet.
This should be the trade-off for being shaded under the umbrella of the old lady.
The notion of being tracked all over really doesn’t sit well with him, but at least this wasn’t the worse case scenario he had envisioned.
Plus, Bubai wasn’t too worried about this tracker becoming a permanent fixture.
It’s not like he didn’t have any way to take it off. It’s just that he was unwilling to put it to the test because such drastic measures were reserved for emergencies.
Turning towards Granny Shu, Bubai offered a respectful bow, “Junior is grateful for Shu Po Po’s care.”
He received a silent nod of approval from the elderly woman, her smile reflecting satisfaction
On the other hand, Shu Fairy placed her hands on her hips, grumbling in response to Bubai's words, “It’s clearly this fairy who bestowed you the gift. Why are you thanking granny?”
Bubai couldn't help but chuckle at Shu Fairy's antics, “Yes, yes, Bubai thanks Shu Ling for her heavy gift and will definitely cherish it.”
Shu Fairy nodded with a self-satisfied expression, her smile bearing an uncanny resemblance to the old granny’s, “Hum, it’s good you know. The value of this fairy’s gift is beyond your imagination, incomparable to the blocks of wood you gave.”
Ah, she was still unhappy over that. Since that was the case...
After weighing the risks, Bubai resolved to proceed with his plan, “Indeed, my small gift really can’t compare. Well, there’s another little gift I have prepared. Not sure if fairy is interested?”
Shu Fairy regarded Bubai with disinterest, her eyes scanning his body, “Making amends now? Hum, this fairy hopes you aren’t just hanging this fairy’s interest just like you do with your stories.”
“Ahem. Of course not. I’m not an author, but… a magician. Let me show fairy a little trick.” Bubai responded with a smile, pulling back the sleeves of his robe to reveal his empty hands, both front and back.
His strange actions prompted Shu Fairy’s disinterested expression to give way to a curious one. Even the old lady couldn't resist peeking over with a single eye.
Bubai’s ugly face did its best to maintain a pleasant demeanor as he politely said, “Shu Ling, please don’t take offense.”
Cupping one hand, Bubai suddenly reached out toward Shu Fairy's ear, catching her off guard before she could react.
His fingers brushed against her ear slightly, registering the tactile sensation of physical contact.
He couldn't discount the possibility of sensory deception by illusion techniques, but at the moment, he can indeed confirm that she’s real!
Despite this revelation, Bubai's expression remained unchanged. He slowly retracted his hand, holding it out before Shu Fairy.
Flipping over his closed palm, Bubai slowly opened it. “Here, for you.”
Shu Fairy’s curious eyes became as bright as the moon when she saw the tael of gold that had miraculously appeared in Bubai’s palm.
Before Bubai could react further, the gold tael had vanished from his palm, entering Shu Fairy’s hand!
With a gleeful expression, she brought it to her lips, her teeth sinking into it to check its gold content.
Satisfied with her impromptu test, the stars within her eyes seemed to have aligned into money symbols as she quickly stowed the tael of gold away into her satchel.
Then, her starry eyes locked onto Bubai’s now-empty hands. Her sandalwood fragrance wafted into his nose as she leaned in, seizing his hand and eagerly rubbing it all over.
Finding nothing, she looked at Bubai as if he was a cornucopia, “You, rich brother- no- fairy brother, do that again! This fairy didn’t see clearly! Show it to this fairy again-”
“Ahum!”
The excited expression on Shu Fairy's face froze, her eyes flicking towards the old lady, who glared disapprovingly from behind the desk.
With an exasperated roll of her eyes, Shu Fairy withdrew from Bubai, her demeanor shifting back to that of a prim and proper noble lady. “Ahum.”
Casually curling her silver hair around her fingers, Shu Fairy put on an elegant smile as she gave Bubai a once-over, “Fufufu, this fairy wasn’t wrong about you. You are indeed a scholar who understand that every book should hold a house of gold.”
Uh… why does that reference sound a bit off with this lady’s choice of words?
Well, don’t mind the small details. They may just be something intentionally leaked to influence other parties, just like what Bubai did here.
The risk existed, but...
Sometimes, maintaining an air of mystery by showing some cards can attract more investment.
Plus, the success of this test opened up new avenues for him to explore and act with.
With a smile, Bubai politely nodded, “Thank you for fairy’s praise.”
Bubai then looked toward the old lady, who regarded him with a deep look.
Shortly after exchanging a glance with him, Granny Shu regarded the duo with a gentle smile, “Hum, now that you young ones have gotten to know each other better, let’s not waste any more of your golden time. There’s still a lot to learn. This old lady presumes young Bubai will not refuse to help this old lady watch over this troublesome girl in her studies?”
Understood. After a brief intermission, it was back to being a knowledge dispensing machine for them.
Shu Fairy begrudgingly turned to the side, pouting with her arms crossed, “Humph, this fairy is not troublesome...”
Ignoring Shu Fairy’s grumbles, Bubai offered a slight bow toward Granny Shu, “Shu Po Po can rest assured to leave Shu Ling in junior’s hands.”
“Fufu, good. Good. With young Bubai’s words, one of the matters in this old lady’s heart could be considered settled.”
Granny Shu resumed her gentle rocking motion once more, the chair’s creaking reflecting the weariness still visible on her face, “Hum. Then, let this old lady rest. Ling’er will accompany you to the second floor and give you your task.”
Hearing the old lady’s words, Bubai felt some excitement course through his body.
The second floor – that was a place that even inner disciples can’t easily enter, even with sufficient contribution points!
Now, he finally gained permission to climb those stairs. It was truly a step into the heavens!
Maintaining his composure, Bubai bowed once more towards the old lady, “Junior heeds Shu Po Po’s orders.”
The old lady responded with a weary nod.
Without further ado, the lively Shu Fairy took the lead, waltzing toward the staircase, “Fufufu, follow along. Let this fairy show you around…”
Casting one last glance towards the resting figure of Granny Shu, Bubai hastened to follow Shu Fairy who was already bounding up the stairs.
Finally, the moment had arrived - to step foot onto the second floor. What new high-end knowledge will he be able to get his hands on?
