Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Gentle and Thoughtful
Gao Zhao's descent was abruptly halted but still veered dangerously close to Liu Yifei.
After landing, Du Sheng, without hesitation, wrapped the slack wire around his waist, dropped his center of gravity, and pulled with all his strength.
"Snap, snap, snap—"
The pulley system let out sharp frictional sounds as Gao Zhao, who had been plummeting, was forcibly hoisted back up.
Zhao Jian, Yuan Bin, and the crew scrambled to regain control, carefully lowering Gao Zhao to the ground.
"Yifei, are you alright?"
Ignoring the burning pain in his palms, Du Sheng turned his attention to Liu Yifei, whose face was pale as a sheet.
It took Liu Yifei a moment to snap out of her daze. Tears welled up in her eyes, the shock of the close call still gripping her.
Yuan Bin exhaled deeply in relief, stepping forward to check on her.
"Thankfully, you reacted quickly, Du Sheng, or this could've been disastrous," Yuan Bin said.
Turning to Gao Zhao, who looked embarrassed and shaken, Yuan Bin furrowed his brows.
"You alright, kid?"
Gao Zhao gave a weak nod. "I'm fine… Just really unlucky."
Yuan Bin glanced at him sharply, understanding that Gao Zhao's own reckless movements had been the cause of the mishap.
"Make sure this doesn't happen again. I'll assign more experienced crew to your harness next time."
Gao Zhao, his guilt evident, muttered an acknowledgment and said no more.
Du Sheng approached Liu Yifei, who was being comforted by Liu Tao and Wang Yi. Slowly, her nerves began to settle, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
"I'm fine now," Liu Yifei said softly, wiping her tears. "Thank you, everyone."
Du Sheng gave her a teasing look. "Come on, you're my cousin—don't be so formal."
Liu Yifei blushed slightly, her voice softening. "Thank you, Cousin."
Satisfied, Du Sheng gently patted her shoulder with a smile.
Liu Tao, witnessing their interaction, couldn't resist chiming in. "You two have such a dynamic that even being cousins feels suspiciously unwholesome."
Du Sheng smirked, countering smoothly, "And you're my warm-bed maid in the story. Isn't that even more unwholesome?"
Liu Tao feigned a scolding look, rolling her eyes. "Stop it, or I'll bite you!"
The exchange lightened the atmosphere, but Du Sheng's focus soon returned to Liu Yifei.
"Are you ready to try again?"
Liu Yifei hesitated, glancing at the waiting crew and replacement stunt double. The fear of another accident lingered, but so did a growing determination.
"You'll do great," Du Sheng said, his voice steady. "Conquering fear is part of the job. If you avoid this now, it could haunt you later. The best actors push through moments like these."
Liu Yifei met his gaze, taking a deep breath before nodding resolutely. "Alright, Cousin, let's do it!"
Her grip on his sleeve betrayed a lingering trepidation, but she didn't let it stop her.
"Good." Du Sheng's encouraging smile returned.
He guided her back to the starting point, staying by her side the whole time. Soon, her nervous laughter and delighted squeals could be heard as the scene resumed, her silver-bell voice carrying across the set.
Watching from afar, Liu Tao murmured to Wang Yi, "With a Murong Fu this gentle and thoughtful, who wouldn't fall for him?"
Wang Yi, while a bit envious, joked back, "If it were Ling Zhiying in his place, I'd be even more jealous."
That evening, after wrapping up for the day, Liu Xiaoli, Liu Yifei's mother, arrived on set and was promptly informed of the earlier incident.
Hearing about her daughter's near-miss, Liu Xiaoli was deeply concerned but decided not to lecture her. After all, growth often comes through challenges.
In the wake of the accident, the crew doubled their focus on safety. Actors like Wang Yi and Zhong Liti, who no longer had wire stunts to perform, were reassigned to refine their combat choreography and acting.
However, for the main cast—including Du Sheng, Liu Yifei, and Liu Tao—there was no escaping their remaining stunts.
Fortunately, Liu Yifei, bolstered by Du Sheng's guidance and encouragement, quickly overcame her initial fear.
As filming progressed, she became increasingly confident, earning admiration from her peers.

One evening, as Du Sheng was having dinner, Liu Yifei approached him with a rare display of initiative.
"Cousin, my scenes here are finished," she said, settling into the seat across from him. "Mom's taking me to report for school tomorrow, and I'll probably be out for a couple of weeks."
With her recent admission to the Beijing Film Academy, Liu Yifei was about to embark on her college journey.
"Studying more is always a good thing," Du Sheng replied, nodding approvingly. "It's not just about honing your craft—building connections can be just as important for your career."
Her academic milestone reminded Du Sheng of his own plans. While he wasn't in a rush, the idea of furthering his education lingered in his mind.
The Central Academy of Drama, Shanghai Theatre Academy, and Beijing Film Academy were the top three institutions for aspiring actors in the country.
Du Sheng knew getting into any of them wouldn't be easy. In the past, as a high schooler without standout talents, such dreams would've seemed out of reach.
But now, with nearly six months before the next admissions cycle, Du Sheng felt confident. His steadily improving skills, bolstered by his acting proficiency, gave him hope for success.
"Cousin," Liu Yifei interrupted his thoughts, resting her chin on her hands. "Didn't you say you wanted to keep studying? Which school are you aiming for?"
Du Sheng smiled slyly. "If I end up at Beijing Film, won't that make me your junior?"
In truth, his preference leaned toward the Central Academy of Drama, widely regarded as the pinnacle of performing arts education in the country.
But its rigorous rules—like barring students from acting during their first two years—gave him pause. Tales of expelled students and intense academic pressure weren't uncommon.
Beijing Film Academy, with its more flexible policies, seemed like a more practical choice. Though it had its quirks, the school still offered a sol
id platform for launching careers.
Whichever path he chose, Du Sheng was determined to make the most of it.
