Chapter 15: The Mountain Trial (Part 5)
Isaki continued his search for the Medis herb, but after hours of scouring the forest floor, there was no sign of it. Three days passed, and each day brought the same result—nothing. Isaki was growing frustrated. He had explored every nook and cranny at the base of the mountain, yet the elusive herb seemed to evade him.
"I don't understand," he muttered to himself. "Where could it be?"
Determined not to give up, Isaki decided to climb higher, ascending the mountain to a new area he hadn't explored yet. As he climbed, he caught sight of some ordinary monkeys leaping playfully from tree to tree, chattering amongst themselves. Isaki paused for a moment to think, his eyes following the agile creatures as they swung effortlessly through the branches. Then it hit him—he had been looking for the plant on the ground the entire time.
"There's one place I haven't checked," he realized. "The tops of the trees!"
Without wasting another second, he began his new search, climbing up one tree after another. The monkeys, now curious, watched his movements with amusement. As Isaki reached the top of a particularly tall tree, one of the monkeys approached him, clutching something in its small hand. It hopped over to a nearby branch, eyeing him curiously before offering him a banana.
Isaki blinked in surprise. "Uh... thanks, I guess," he said, taking the banana from the monkey's outstretched hand. The creature gave him an approving nod and chattered happily.
With a chuckle, Isaki peeled the banana and took a bite, savoring the sweet fruit. "You're not so bad, huh?" he said to the monkey, who screeched excitedly in response and jumped back to its companions.
The moment was unexpectedly comical, and Isaki couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all—here he was, scaling trees like a monkey himself, eating a banana offered to him by one of the creatures. It was a light-hearted moment in the midst of his stressful search.
Finally, after climbing over twenty trees, Isaki's persistence paid off. High above the forest floor, nestled in the crook of a thick branch, he spotted the Medis herb—a delicate flower with vibrant purple petals. His heart raced as he carefully plucked the flowers and stored them safely in his pouch.
"At last," he whispered to himself, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over him. His task was nearly complete.
But just as he was securing the herbs, Isaki's sharp ears caught the sound of something stirring. A low rumble, like rocks shifting, echoed from the other side of the mountain. He froze for a moment, trying to determine the source of the noise. It was distant, but unmistakable.
His curiosity piqued, Isaki descended from the tree and headed toward the noise, eager to see what was happening on the other side of the mountain.

Jenia and Balko were climbing higher up the mountain, pushing themselves to finish the last of their tasks. All that was left was finding the elusive Medis herb. As they ascended, they ran into a cadet making his way down. He looked exhausted, but satisfied.
"Hey, where are you headed?" Balko asked, catching the cadet's attention.
The cadet wiped sweat from his brow and smiled. "I've finished all my tasks. Heading back down to camp now."
"Wait, you found the Medis?" Balko pressed, his curiosity piqued. "Where did you get it? We've been searching everywhere."
The cadet chuckled, shaking his head. "It's not easy to find. The Medis isn't on the ground. Try looking in the treetops—that's where I found mine."
Jenia blinked in shock. "In the trees? Seriously? We've been searching the forest floor this whole time!"
The cadet nodded. "Yeah, a lot of people made the same mistake. Plenty of cadets have already finished and are heading down now. If you want to get your hands on it, you'd better hurry. The trees are running out of the herb."
Balko clenched his fists, determined. "Thanks for the tip."
The cadet waved and dashed off, eager to descend before the rest. Jenia, still surprised, turned to Balko. "I can't believe it... all this time, we were looking in the wrong place."
"Doesn't matter," Balko said, his eyes set with determination. "We still have time. Let's keep moving."
The two of them continued to climb, now scanning the trees carefully. They scaled over ten trees in their search, but each time they came up empty-handed. The branches where the Medis should have been were bare, plucked clean by the cadets who had come before them.
Frustration was starting to set in when they reached an unusual tree, taller and sturdier than the others around it. The trunk was thick, its bark old and gnarled, and its branches reached high above the canopy like outstretched arms.
"This one looks different," Jenia said, staring up at the towering tree. "Maybe it's still got some Medis left."
"Alright," Balko replied, crossing his arms. "Who's going up?"
Jenia smirked, her tone teasing. "Why don't you climb this time? You're always boasting about your strength."
Balko raised an eyebrow. "Me? You know I'm not great at climbing trees. You've got the agility for it."
Before they could bicker further, a deep rumble vibrated through the ground, causing both of them to freeze. From the top of the tree, they heard the rustling of branches, followed by a chilling sound—like the hiss of a great beast.
"What was that?" Jenia whispered, her eyes wide with alarm.
Suddenly, a massive head burst through the leaves, and a terrifyingly large serpent—easily fifteen meters long—descended from the treetops. Its glossy black scales shimmered in the sunlight, and its golden eyes gleamed with predatory intent. The serpent opened its wide mouth, revealing razor-sharp fangs dripping with venom. With a swift, deadly strike, it lunged toward Balko, aiming to sink its teeth into him.
"Look out!" Jenia screamed.
Balko leapt to the side just in time, narrowly avoiding the serpent's attack. The ground where he had stood moments before was torn apart by the creature's fangs, leaving a gaping hole in the dirt.
The two of them quickly regrouped, realizing they had no choice but to fight. "We can't get close to that thing," Balko said, gripping his spear tightly. "We'll have to take it down from a distance."
"I'll try using magic," Jenia replied, her voice steady but filled with tension. "But I have to be careful not to burn down the trees."
The serpent reared back, preparing for another strike. Jenia extended her hand, summoning a ball of flame, and hurled it toward the creature. It dodged with unnatural speed, weaving between the trees with frightening agility. Balko charged forward, thrusting his spear, but the serpent was too quick, avoiding every strike with ease.
"Damn it! It's too fast!" Balko growled.
Jenia unleashed a barrage of fireballs, each one narrowly missing its target as the serpent slithered through the branches, closing the distance between them. In a blur of motion, it darted forward, sinking its fangs into Balko's arm before he could react.
"Agh!" Balko staggered back, clutching his arm as his vision began to blur. The venom was swift, clouding his senses and making him stumble.
"Balko!" Jenia cried out, panic rising in her chest. She cast another spell, flames roaring to life in her palm, but the serpent was already upon her, moving faster than she could react. It dodged every attack with ease, its golden eyes locked on her as it prepared to strike.
With Balko weakened and the serpent bearing down on her, Jenia's heart raced. She backed up, trying to come up with a plan, but the creature was too fast. In a matter of seconds, it would be upon her.
The serpent lunged, its massive jaws open wide, ready to strike.
