Denizens of the Labyrinth

Book 2 Chapter Five; Mourning

She had not spoken in days.

The others had tried to console her, but she just could not feel anything but abject sorrow. She was sitting now, in a rented room. Alone and hugging her knees on the bed, she watched as rain lashed at the window, she now looked out of, and she could not tell if the pane was blurry from rain or tears of her own.

A soft knock hit her door and she waited to listen.

“May I come in?” the voice was mature and calming, it was Baek.

“What do you want?” she asked, her voice wrecked from crying.

“To speak with you please.” She did not rise up, but her lack of response told him he could enter.

She did not move, and he did not ask that of her, instead he simply came to sit at the small desk in her room. She smelt soothing aromas and when she looked over, he was pouring tea. Two cups. She sighed and clambered off the bed to sit at the desk too.

“It is enough my lady.” He said, not looking up as he made it somewhat of a ceremony to pour tea.

“She looked at him, but he did not look at her, he made it his business to study the tea as it poured from his flask into a small cup that she held onto and let the warmth warm her fingers and palms.

“You are mourning for no reason.” He told her and rage made her clutch the cup for a long moment before she was able to respond how she wanted to.

“What do you mean?” she asked, through clenched teeth.

“Did you look at your stats? He asked and she nodded.

“look again.” She did and her stats showed up.

She looked at it and nothing had changed, she did not notice anything different.

Baek sipped his tea and looked at her.

“Your party has not gone down.” He said and she looked again.

Yes, it still said 5 out of 5 and she was trembling immensely.

“Just like you, it would let me know if my master died. the system would share that with a retainer, like it would alert you as a member of the same party.” He explained and this time, she sipped her own tea.

“What does that mean then?” she asked on the edge of her seat.

“He is somewhere else. Not dead, just lost.” He explained and she was getting giddy at his calmness.

“Why are we not looking for him? We should be doing something!” she shouted and nearly knocking the cup over, but Baek caught it with Mana. He steadied it and ensured all the tea stayed in the cup.

“He is in a lost gate; we could not enter even if we wanted to. Or so he is, I sent missives to try and find him, but they could not contact him. Which means the system is blocking it. The best we can do right now, is keep moving forward. You are in a party together; he will follow your path or you his. But the system always reconnects party members.” He explained and she cried. A real cry now, something that she had holding back and Baek rose up to let her hold onto him while she cried.

“Get stronger, that is all you can do. That is all we can do.” He told her and she cried, cried even more.
