Chapter 192: C164(2)
Jim, watching the audience's reaction, couldn't contain his smile. He knew the movie had achieved something extraordinary.
This film had reshaped Batman's image, presenting him not as a god but as a deeply human hero—an idol who symbolized justice and sacrifice.
Anton stood and clapped.
"Congratulations," he said to the creators. "The movie is spectacular."
Around him, voices of praise filled the room. The premiere was a resounding success.
Tony remained seated, lost in thought.
Something in him seemed to settle, a decision crystallizing in his mind.
Anton passed by him, but Tony didn't notice.
"Anton."
Tony stopped his old friend. "This is an excellent movie."
"Thank you," Anton replied without hesitation. "It's a masterpiece."
"It's Batman's masterpiece, not yours," Tony said lightly, standing up to leave.
He could have stayed to watch Anton and the other creatives revel in their success on stage, but there was no need. Everyone knew the truth: the real draw of the movie was Batman.
The name alone guaranteed success. Even a poorly made film would sell as long as it bore the Batman brand. And when the quality of the film was as high as this one? Success was inevitable.
As Tony left, Coulson quietly followed, eager to report the film's contents to Nick Fury.
He needed to discuss whether the movie alluded to the real-life Batman. After all, Batman had proven to be a major headache for S.H.I.E.L.D.
Recently, Batman had made contact with the U.S. military. And with the Justice League now represented by Anton, backed by the influence of the Jameson family, their reach extended into the political arena as well.
S.H.I.E.L.D. was already outmatched in terms of sheer power. Politically, they were losing ground too.
If things continued this way, the Avengers—still in its infancy—would be utterly overshadowed by the Justice League.
This was a scenario Nick Fury would not allow.
Meanwhile, the Dark Knight premiere concluded amidst thunderous applause.
Online, movie forums and websites were flooded with reviews and discussions about the film.
The majority of critics gave it glowing, unprecedented praise. A few contrarian voices attempting to gain attention were promptly ignored by the public.
Headlines such as:
"Batman and the Joker: Two Sides of the Same Coin?" "When You Stare into the Abyss, the Abyss Stares Back" "The Batman of Reality Is a God, but the Batman in This Movie Shows His Humanity"
These reviews ignited a frenzy online.
On major movie sites, the film's scores soared:
Rotten Tomatoes: 97% IMDb: 9.1
The critical acclaim was so high it seemed almost historic. Excitement was palpable.
Back at DC headquarters, Anton returned to his office.
He loosened his tie, sank into the boss's chair, and prepared to bask in the flow of good news he knew would come.
Ringing!
The sudden shrill of his phone broke the moment.
It was Jonah Jameson.
"Old man, the movie's a success!" Anton greeted with a smile.
But the smile vanished as Jameson's grave tone came through the line.
"The Wayne Company was bombed!"
Jameson's voice was shaken. "I'm fine—Wick saved me—but the company's in trouble. This was a terrorist attack."
Anton's expression darkened, a dangerous glint in his eyes.
"I'll be there immediately. Wait for me," he said coldly before hanging up.
A few minutes earlier...
Anton had just parked and was heading upstairs to the DC office.
Meanwhile, across Manhattan, a group of men in blue electrician uniforms infiltrated the Wayne Company building under the guise of maintenance work.
Their target was clear: the floor where Wayne Company operated.
Inside, Jameson was overseeing operations. As always, his personal bodyguard, Wick, remained stationed outside his office.
The electricians moved through the building without drawing suspicion. Business went on as usual.
But Wick sensed something was off.
Once a feared assassin in New York, Wick's instincts had saved his life countless times.
Although the men disappeared behind a wall moments after entering his line of sight, Wick's sharp intuition flagged them immediately.
Something about them wasn't right.
He stepped forward to investigate.
When the electrician saw Wick appear, he didn't panic. Instead, he smiled—a chilling, twisted grin full of mockery and madness.
It was not the smile of a man, but that of someone who had abandoned humanity, like a devotee of the god of death, bringing an ominous omen.
Danger!
Wick's instincts flared. His sharp eyes caught a disturbing detail—the skin on the two men was turning red, heating unnaturally. Without hesitation, he raised his gun and fired.
Bang! Bang!
Flames erupted from the muzzle as bullets shot through the air, slamming into the hearts of the two electricians.
The impact sent the men crashing into the wall behind them.
To Wick's surprise, the bullets didn't seem to deal a fatal blow. Though they stumbled, the mocking smiles on their faces barely faltered.
"Damn it!" Wick cursed under his breath, his pupils narrowing as he realized these weren't ordinary men. He was dealing with something far more dangerous.
Understanding the urgency, Wick made a split-second decision. He turned and sprinted toward Jameson's office. These two were far too dangerous to engage further without a plan.
For Wick, the priority was clear: protect Jonah Jameson at all costs.
He was a man of his word. Ever since taking on the role of bodyguard for the Jameson family, Wick had fulfilled his duties with precision and care—not just because of professional responsibility, but because of the weight of Anton's identity.
While most believed Batman to be a force of good, Wick knew better. Having faced Batman once before, Wick had felt the overwhelming, suffocating aura of death that surrounded the vigilante. It was an experience he never wanted to repeat.
Boom!
Wick kicked open the office door, startling Jameson, who looked up in confusion.
"Wick!" Jameson frowned. "What's going on?"
BOOM!!
Before Wick could answer, an earth-shaking explosion tore through the building. Intense heat and roaring flames consumed the hallway. The shockwave slammed into the half-open door, blasting it off its hinges.
Wick's face darkened. There was no time to explain. Without a word, he grabbed Jameson and leaped out of the window.
Fortunately, Wayne Company's offices occupied only the lower levels of the building. The first floor housed the lobby, the second floor was reserved for researchers and employees, and the third to fifth floors were dedicated to laboratories and treatment rooms.
Wick and Jameson crashed through the window of the second floor, landing hard on the roof of a car parked below.
Shielding Jameson with his own body, Wick absorbed the brunt of the impact.
Crack! Crack!
Above them, the explosion had already penetrated through the second, third, and even fourth floors. Glass shards rained down like deadly confetti, glittering in the fiery light.
Without hesitation, Wick rolled over Jameson, using his body as a shield once more to block the falling debris.
After what felt like an eternity, the chaos subsided.
Thick black smoke billowed from the shattered remains of the building. The Wayne Company's once-pristine offices now lay in ruins.
Jameson stood by the side of the road, his expression a mix of shock and fury as he gazed at the destruction. Beside him, Wick—though battered and bruised—remained vigilant, watching for further threats.
"This wasn't random," Wick muttered, his eyes narrowing. "Those two were here for a reason. They came for Wayne Company."
Jameson clenched his fists, his face darkening. He had no illusions about his position. This attack wasn't just an act of terrorism; it was targeted.
After a moment of contemplation, Jameson pulled out his phone and dialed a familiar number.
"The Wayne Company was bombed!" he said grimly when Anton answered.
