Chapter 30: Chapter 23: Heroes are Mortals (Part 2)_1

Strange swallowed hard, looking into Shiller's gray eyes, he truly didn't have the courage to refuse, after all, anyone with a brain could see that Shiller was far from ordinary.

Strange was dragged into the car, but he still said, "I need to tell you, I'm a doctor, not God. If your friend is already dead, no matter how much you threaten me, I can't bring him back to life."

With a stoic expression, Shiller drove, saying, "We're both doctors, I know this better than you. The reason I came to you is because I'm sure you can save him."

Strange breathed a sigh of relief but was still frowning, stubbornly retorting: "You're only a psychologist. You'd better not make arbitrary conclusions about neurology."

Before he could finish his sentence, he saw a ballpoint pen pointed at his forehead again. Shiller's hands were both busy driving, but the ballpoint pen just floated there. Strange made a 'zip your lips' motion with his hand, signifying his absolute silence from then on.

Elsewhere, Little Spider was standing guiltily at the doorway of the operating room, not even wanting a fly to get in.

Unfortunately, Matt's ex-girlfriend, Erica, also sneaked up to the door of the operating room.

Erica wasn't there to kill Matt. On the contrary, she knew the gang's plan earlier than Peter. Erica had wanted to warn Matt, but he left too quickly, and Erica wasn't able to get there until after the incident.

Her feelings for Matt were complicated. They were classmates and lovers, but they broke up due to irreconcilable differences. Erica had accepted Kingpin's commission to assassinate Matt, but she had shown restraint in every action. She never really wanted to kill Matt. However, in her short moment of negligence, Matt had fallen victim to a deadly plot, making her extremely anxious.

Erica came from a wealthy background and wasn't inexperienced. She knew Matt's injuries were severe and his condition very critical. Without the help of some mystical power, it'd be impossible to save him. She needed to take action. Perhaps only the power of the Beast could potentially save Matt's life.

Erica activated her ninja technique and moved to the entrance of the operating room. She didn't pay much attention to the high school student standing at the door. After observing him for a few days, she knew that Peter was just an untrained high school boy. Erica planned to bypass him and enter the room.

However, Peter has the Spider-sense ability. Since he was quite anxious, his Spider-sense was more sensitive than ever. The moment Erica got close, Peter turned his head and stared fixedly at the corner of the room. He felt someone was there and swung his fist towards Erica.

Erica knew about Peter's unusual strength, and she didn't dare to meet his attack head-on. However, Peter's movements were full of flaws; he didn't have specialized training. When throwing a punch, he leaned too far forward, his legs were not spread apart, and he lost his balance. Erica's arm wrapped around Peter's wrist instantly, pulled him forward and Peter lost his footing and fell forward.

With a simple trip from Erica, Peter was thrown off balance. Perhaps due to anxiety triggering ability use, Peter sprang up just as he hit the ground, tightly clinging to Erica's waist with his arm.

Erica was also very anxious and both were in a heated moment. However, Erica was a trained female assassin from the Hand Union. As soon as Peter grabbed her, she swung her dagger-bearing hand back.

The dagger carrying an airblade cut from Peter's shoulder down to his last rib muscles, almost severing half of his body.

At once, an indescribable pain consumed Peter, almost triggering his full potential. He exerted strength, and Erica was thrown away, landing at the end of the corridor and could not get up for quite some time.

Peter also fell to the ground. He felt as if he was about to die from pain. The dagger didn't just slash half of his back open; the airblade also sliced into his lung. With every breath, blood gushed up his windpipe.

Peter felt pain like that for the first time. His back muscles had been torn apart, and the pain almost made him faint.

He was only a high school student. The worst pain he'd experienced in his life were a few punches he took a few days ago. Compared to the wounds he had now, it was like night and day.

His back was almost pierced through, and his lung was also injured. Each breath he took was bloody and every inhalation was accompanied by intense pain. Tears of agony rolled down Peter's cheeks, as painful whimpers squeezed out of his throat.

He suddenly realized that even heroes could get hurt, and bleed.

And a hero's wounds can hurt terribly, not a tad easier just because they have some special ability.

His self-healing power made him feel slightly better after a few breaths. Through his misty peripheral vision, he peered into the operating room. Through the frosted glass, he could see Night Devil lying there.

Night Devil was lying on his side, eyes open. He was still conscious, but immobile.

Peter knew that Night Devil did not have self-healing powers. He was near death.

He was just a blind man with knowledge of martial arts; now his entire spine was broken. He must be in terrible pain, worse than Peter's, and yet, he could not utter a sound.
