Chapter 6 - Wolf King
Matai took the wolf corpses without any hesitation and threw them far away.
They didn’t lack meat, and it wouldn’t last long anyway, with the smell of blood still heavy. Wolf skins, on the other hand, were good things, with thick and dense fur, but they weren’t needed in this weather, and Matai weren’t afraid of the cold. They could just find a piece of beast skin to wrap themselves in during winter.
Lu Yu watched them come and go, lost in thought.
Whether it was hunting or recuperating, they could get injured, and his medicine reserves were almost depleted now. He needed to figure out a way to get more.
Although rabbits and the gray giant wolf they encountered tonight could drop red medicine, the cost-effectiveness of specifically hunting them was very low. Rabbits had few in number and little meat, not worth it. Hunting gray giant wolves would definitely result in injuries, using up the just-dropped red medicine. It was a waste.
How could he obtain a large amount of red medicine at once? Lu Yu wondered.
—
The night passed.
It was another clear morning.
Lu Yu followed Matai to a small lake nearby to freshen up.
Since there was still a lot of meat left from the elephant yesterday, they didn’t need to rush to find food today.
Matai planned to find the salt rock pepper that Lu Yu mentioned, gather a little more, and let everyone enjoy delicious grilled meat.
Lu Yu agreed and went with them to the jungle not far behind the cave.
Their formation was with Lu Yu standing in the middle, with people in front, behind, left, and right. Tai Lie was on the left, and Xia Cao, who followed, was on the right.
When they came out, Lu Yu said to let Xia Cao stand in the middle. He felt that Xia Cao, after all, was a female and should be given a little more protection.
But Xia Cao smiled, her face gentle but her tone firm, “It’s okay, Witch. If there’s danger, I’ll avoid it.”
Lu Yu nodded helplessly. He thought that since the jungle behind the cave had been patrolled by Matai, there shouldn’t be as many wild beasts as there were last night.
Whether it was Lu Yu being too pessimistic or Murphy’s Law at work, just a short while after the group set off, Tai Lie called a halt.
Lu Yu was a little nervous. “What’s wrong?”
Tai Lie said lightly, “There’s a wild beast.”
Lu Yu was startled. “What kind of wild beast? How many? Should we run?”
Xia Cao smiled, “Don’t worry, it’s just a brown fox.”
Lu Yu: ?
Xia Cao reached out her hand. “Witch, look, over there—”
Lu Yu followed her fingertips and looked over.
… I might be blind.
He didn’t see anything at all.
After staring hard for a long time, he seemed to see the grass shaking a hundred meters away.
A brown fur long-tailed fox suddenly jumped out and bolted like lightning.
Lu Yu exclaimed, “It’s running! So fast!”
As soon as he finished speaking, a long and slender wooden stick flew out from his right ear like lightning, flying straight toward the brown fox, piercing through its body and ruthlessly pinning it in place.
Lu Yu: ?!?
Bullseye?
“Shan Pu, go pick it up,” Xia Cao shouted ahead and then turned to Lu Yu with a gentle smile. “Witch, I’ll skin this fox for you to use in winter.”
Lu Yu looked at her empty right hand, which had just held the wooden stick. “Okay.”
What was wrong with him just now? He thought that Matai females needed more protection than him.
In their eyes, he was probably just a weak little…
After walking for a while without any gain, Shan Pu in the front suddenly brightened his eyes, quickly ran out like a gust of wind, squatted down to pick up something, and then ran back at lightning speed.
“Witch, do you think this is wild pepper?!” He held up a small red fruit for Lu Yu to see.
Lu Yu shook his head, “No.” It was a wild tomato.
“Ah…” Shan Pu disappointedly wanted to throw away what he had in his hand, but Lu Yu stopped him, took the tomato from him.
In addition to finding seasoning, it was necessary to bring back some vegetables.
Matai only loved meat, and they would only eat a little bit of even the sweetest fruit when they couldn’t catch any prey. Continuing like this would definitely lead to a lack of vitamins and a weakened immune system. Then various diseases would emerge, and it would be too late to regret it.
Lu Yu put the tomato into his ring and said seriously, “This can also be eaten. You gather—”
Wait a minute.
Lu Yu paused in his speech, suddenly realizing that Matai were not ordinary people. They had strong genes, extraordinary talents, and without natural disasters, living to be a thousand years old was considered dying young.
Their physique was stronger than that of wild beasts, and they lived longer than tortoises. He, who was fretting over someone eating too few vegetables, was actually worried about nothing…
He was worrying about himself.
—
Lu Yu said weakly, “Forget it, just gather a little bit randomly.”
“Okay!” Shan Pu went off full of energy.
The jungle grew deeper, and the vegetation became denser.
It wasn’t until Lu Yu felt a little hungry that they finally found a place where pepper trees grew scatteredly.
Everyone dispersed to collect the small red fruits hidden behind the green leaves.
Lu Yu picked a handful of wild pepper and looked at Shan Pu, who was happily bouncing not far away, paused, and said, “Shan Pu, come here for a moment.”
“What’s wrong? Witch.” Shan Pu walked over, squatting down beside Lu Yu, still holding a handful of wild pepper in his hand.
Lu Yu took the pepper from his hand and put it into the ring. “I want to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
“Last night, when the wolves came, were you at the entrance of the cave?”
“Yes.”
Lu Yu frowned slightly, hesitated, and asked, “Did you see a special wolf…”
In front of the short pepper tree, a black and white contrast, the two of them squatted together with their heads close together, murmuring something. Because they were too close, their arms occasionally rubbed against each other, looking unusually intimate.
Tai Lie silently watched over there, Xia Cao glanced at their King, then looked at the two people in front of the pepper tree, and casually said, “The Witch seems to be talking very happily with Shan Pu.”
Tai Lie pursed his lips slightly, his eyes darkening.
—
“What? Witch, do you want to kill the Wolf King?” Shan Pu exclaimed in surprise.
Matai who were gathering wild pepper put down what they were doing and looked over inexplicably.
Lu Yu noticed that everyone was looking over and stood up, saying loudly, “Yes.”
Matai whispered among themselves.
“What? The Witch wants to go kill the Wolf King? Why?”
“I don’t know, but it’s a bit difficult to kill the Wolf King.”
“Yeah, the Wolf King is faster than Shan Pu.”
“And, the Wolf King’s territory has many wolves.”
“Is wolf meat very delicious when grilled?”
—
Tai Lie walked up to him, lowered his head to look at him, and asked in a deep voice, “Reason?”
Lu Yu smiled, “I’m about to tell the King.”
“I can get what we need most from the Wolf King.”
