Celia: After Dying in the Apocalypse, I Live Once Again!

Chapter 14: Frog Life.

Hello! This is my latest novel! Unlike my other novels, this one isn't finished yet. The first volume is finished, though. And you can buy it on Amazon here. If you would be so kind, you can also get the first volume(and anything else I've made.) on my Patreon for donating $10 or over that, here. If you wish for updates, the $10 and over tiers will give you access to chapters when I actually finish them. (Maybe one a day? Idk, as I will be mainly working on other novels as well. But, there will at least be one new chapter every few days.)

Chapter 14: Frog Life.

*Celia’s POV*

The fight with the lizard was legendary. Or, really not at all. To kill it, I just grabbed it with my tongue again, but then smashed it against the ground until it died. Once it was dead, I ate it.

Much to my surprise, it actually tasted pretty good! My only complaints are that it tasted somewhat dirty. Which is understandable, considering the environment.

That fight was around a week ago. Or was it? I am living in a cave right now, and I haven’t bothered to leave it at all, so I honestly don’t know how long it has been.

My current situation is that I have a full stomach, and I have already evolved into a Poison Long Tongued Frog. I also got that Danger Sense upgrade as well.

Thinking about Upgrades vs Skills, I have come to the conclusion that Skills are active. While Upgrades are passive. So I don’t have to think about using Upgrades, they just work in the background of my mind.

Other than that revelation, nothing interesting has happened lately. While exploring the cavern, for the life of me, I could not figure out, or even find where the Primal Goblins are coming from.

They would pop up at random. Rather than just a cavern, I have a feeling that this might be a dungeon. The Primal Goblins aren’t the only creatures that just appear out of nowhere. The same goes for the lizards and the insects.

I am at least 99% sure that this place is a dungeon of some kind. Another thing supporting this theory, is that its inhabitants, are just those Primal Goblins, two different kinds of insects, and those poison lizards.

By the time that I wanted to inspect a lot of this cavern, a problem happened… The System, said that she needed to go offline for a bit.

No. That doesn’t mean that I just can’t talk to her for a while. It meant that I couldn’t use the System whatsoever… The lack of the System, shocked me greatly for a while…

Eventually, I got used to not having it. As of now, it has been offline for, I think, around a week or two. In that time, I have pretty much explored the entirety of this cavern.

Hah! That would be a lie. This place is so damn big, I think that it would take me months to completely explore it. Though, even with more to explore in it, I am still quite bored at the moment. Luckily, I did evolve before the System left, but I do not know what my evolution options are, or even what my Status looks like.

She did leave the second that I woke up from the evolution, so I did not have the time to look at either of those menus. Right now, I am contemplating leaving this cavern.

Without the System, I might be at a major disadvantage… Even weighing the cons, I still chose to leave the cavern in the end. Outside the cavern, though I did get a glance of it a while back, was an immense forest.

There were trees the size of buildings. With emerald green leaves. Honestly, it was quite the beautiful sight… Ah, right. The cavern was situated in between a rocky gray cliff. Outside of it, were a small group of Primal Goblins. They looked to be guards of some kind.

Since I didn’t have a human helper this time, I quickly decided against trying to fight them, and just quietly hopped further into the forest. As quiet as a slimy frog hopping around can be, that is…

The forest was an interesting place, to say the least. That farmer must be living in the complete middle of nowhere… Either that, or that cavern was actually way further away from the farm than I originally thought.

Despite being my world, but greatly changed, the number of different creatures that I have seen in just an hour or two of exploring, was shocking… I really wish that the System would show up again, so that I can use Inspect on everything that I am seeing…

I might have been an English Teacher, but I was also pretty interested in researching animals and insects. With the Inspect Skill, I can now do it with ease. That is, if I actually had access to the System at the moment…

This seems to happen a lot, but while I was lost in thought, I ended up getting attacked… This time, it was wolf-like creatures. One of them landed a scratch on me with their claws, which hurt a lot!

I don’t know how much damage to my HP that the wolf just did, but I would say it wasn’t insignificant. Using my tongue, I slapped the one who hurt me with it. Since I can use poison, the attack was quite effective.

The wolf thingy howled in pain, and then rather than fight me, they all ran away. Wow… I did not expect them to just run away from such a weak attack… Ah, I see…

They didn’t run because of my attack, they ran because of what was behind me… There was a huge frog-like creature behind my back. Maybe those wolf’s thought that it was my mom, or something like that?

The giant frog surely did NOT think this, though… As it launched its tongue at me without any hesitation. I mean, we kinda look the same, couldn’t you at least, NOT just attack me the second that we meet!?…

Even with the inability to check out this thing’s Status, I wasn’t going to take the chance and fight it. Luckily, it was quite slow, given how big it was. Due to its size, I was able to hop away to safety.

Hiding under the cover of a rock, I was pretty upset. Lacking the System, this world was even more dangerous. Sure, I could rely on my common sense, but that poison lizard looked pretty safe to hunt. Judging a book by its cover in this changed world, can literally get me killed…

For now, I guess that I should just take shelter under this rock, and get some sleep. I was already pretty tired, after all. Rather than under the rock, it was more like I was just in a decent sized crack in the rock. As I was about to fall asleep, I was disturbed by the sound of the System…

System: “User, Celia, an update to the System is ready, please be prepared for it.” She said.

Celia: “What do you mean by that?” I ask with a curious tone.

System: “The System is connected to your soul, as such, the update will hurt.” She replied.

Celia: “Can I not opt out of the update!?” I yell.

System: “No. As compensation, you will be given a gift. I am sure that you will like it quite a lot.” She answered.

Before I could argue further, I felt as if someone just punched me hard in the… well, everywhere! The pain was ten times worse than evolving… Due to the pain, I passed out within seconds…
