Chapter 44 – The virus
Klaye was shocked. He remembered his script placed emphasis on how important it was to become infected at that time in the alley. But he never ever imagined it was because that virus was different.
„... Are you sure?”
Dedra nodded, then took out the documents he showed to Vincent before.
Klaye accepted it. He was still confused and hoped to get some answers after reading it.
Some researchers found frozen animals in Antarctica. Accidentally, one of them contained the virus that caused human evolution millions of years ago. It was a big discovery, yet some kings chose to hide it. They hoped to find a way to trigger another evolution.
For a decade, the researchers tried a lot of ways to improve the virus without success. It wasn’t that the evolution didn’t happen, but it needed too long time. They wanted to create a miracle and let it take place in some days. They even tried out the things they found in the space. Most of the researchers laughed at this trying because none of them thought that the solution would be something outside the Earth.
They were wrong. It was on the Moon. There wasn’t supposed for anything to stay alive, yet they found some kinds of alga. It contained the necessary material they needed, and the evolution succeeded. But the 70% mortality rate was too big. Not to mention, the awakened abilities’ power was too little. They needed to improve it.
Once they created the virus with the best effect, they found another problem. Its lifespan was too short. They found a village to try it out. They put the virus into the water, but it perished before it infected even a human...
The researchers modified the virus, again and again, only to realize they needed to debase it to make it stay alive longer. It raised the mortality rate, but they didn’t mind it. They already had the perfect virus in their hands, and everyone could get it who participated in the research.
Klaye read the whole document slowly. He seemed to get a lot of answers yet, had more questions. He put it down and sighed. „So their perfect virus...?”
„The one you were infected.” Dedra smiled. „But they did a mistake with it. As you see, once the two versions met in my body, my abilities became the best! You know, there are illnesses when you need to get more than one injection. This is the same. The first injection, the virus they released, and the second what they used on themselves. But they failed to find this problem. Even if they found it out, it is too late.”
„Why? There wasn’t any problem with you...”
„Because I drank your blood before my abilities awakened. For the best effect, the infected need to get the second one before their ability awaken. Once it’s missed it can only strengthen their power.” Dedra pointed at him. „Aren’t you two the same? After you had a relationship with Vincent, your power grew a little... Am I right?”
Klaye nodded. „But Vincent didn’t drink my blood...”
Dedra laughed. „You are so innocent! Aren’t you two kissed? Had sex without protection? It’s so easy to infect the other with your virus...”
Klaye’s face turned red. He didn’t think about it this way...
„But there’s a chance for their children. If the parents get the two injections, maybe their descendants can awaken similar powers as mine...” Dedra sighed and looked at the zombie. „Not to mention, the zombies evolving slowly. I don’t think all of them would be killed in time. I need to see how strong they can be.”
Right now, Dedra could command the zombies. But if one day they surpassed him, it would be problematic. Even if he was the strongest, he was alone.
Dedra touched his stomach and caressed it. He could only count on his unborn child. Everything else depended on Vincent and his choice.
Klaye was confused. „With your knowledge, why didn’t they asked you to join this research?”
„Didn’t Vincent tell you?” Dedra was surprised. „My father was a talented scientist. But one day he suddenly told me: Humans can’t play God... And two days later, he died in an accident. At that time, I was too little and didn’t think too much about it. But seeing the world now, it isn’t hard to understand the cause and effect...” he put down his empty cup. „My mother died when I was born, but she had a best friend who visited me a lot. When my father died, she adopted me...” Dedra stopped for a while and thought about something. „Do you know Vincent’s parents divorced?”
Klaye was surprised and nodded. Everyone knows about it, but he couldn’t understand how it connected to the topic.
„It was her mother. She adopted me. But because of her previous noble status, I couldn’t change my name. I didn’t mind it because I didn’t want to forget I was my father’s son...”
„Aren’t you changed it now?” Klaye couldn’t understand his thinking.
„... Because I’m not human anymore.” he sighed. „After I drank your blood, I had some unclear dreams, but I forgot them when I woke up. Later, Vincent called me Dedra, and it was so familiar. As if I was called by that name for a long time... Then I had some dreams, but this time I didn’t forget them... Dedra, the zombie king.”
„You aren’t a zombie...” Klaye denied.
„So you know something too.” Dedra smiled. „That night, when Vincent called me, I realized he knew more than what he said. And Howard showed an unpleasant face... It can explain his sudden personality change. He came and forced me into a relationship... He was triggered by some forgotten memories...”
Klaye didn’t know what to say and lifted up his cup, only to realize it was already empty. He put it down and coughed. „Is it possible for an ability to mutate? My wounds suddenly healed after I woke up.”
Dedra thought about it. „The virus in the zombie’s body is different. It’s rare, but some healed survivors experienced similar changes. But I need to check your blood... I don’t know too much about it.”
Klaye nodded and let the doctor draw his blood. He tried to remember if he asked everything he wanted. But his thought was in a mess. He tried to digest the new information and forgot about almost everything else.
He was the most interested in Dedra’s name change. But knowing he had some memories from the previous life, he didn’t want to ask more. He read the book and knew they weren’t pleasant memories.
The things about the virus were too complicated for him. He let it for the professionals to handle.
And the change in his ability... He needed to test if it just self-healing or he could heal others too. And Dedra couldn’t study his blood in some minutes...
Klaye’s line of sight landed on Dedra’s stomach. „What about the child?”
„He’s healthy! It’s a boy!” Dedra smiled happily. „I didn’t know how to tell it to Howard, but it isn’t necessary anymore. He’s my child... Maybe later I’ll find him a foster-father.”
„You accepted it really fast.”
„You are wrong! I just didn’t believe this relationship would last long. And aren’t I right?” Dedra laughed. „I’m too soft and obedient. I wasn’t suitable to be with him. Maybe one day he’ll meet a stubborn person who can discipline him.”
Klaye’s face darkened. Why the hell I thought about Queen?!
„Huh? You already have a candidate... haven’t you? Who is it?” Dedra’s eyes shined. He didn’t seem to really care about their brake up.
Klaye smiled and happily told him about the days when Howard needed to take care of Queen. Those two had lots of disagreements, and Queen never minded using her power to solve the quarrels.
Dedra imagined it and laughed. „Good pair!”
„... But Queen is a cat!”
„Klaye, did you already forget it? Humans weren’t humans in the beginning. They were able to evolve because of the virus. Now its effect was speeded up. So there’s a big possibility for the animals to turn into humans after 40-50 years.”
Klaye’s chin fell. „Really?!”
„Of course! Maybe it needs a little more time, but our lifespan becomes longer too, so we only need to wait and see it!”
Klaye couldn’t imagine it. Would their ears and tail remain as in those stories? Would they be able to change between their shapes as the beastmen? If all the animals changed, then what would they eat?!
„Are you kidding, right? Then what about the plants?! If they change too, then what about our food?!” Klaye’s eyes widened.
Dedra was speechless. „You’re thinking too much! Millions of years before only part of them evolved! And even now, there are animals without power. And the plants don’t have consciousness. Maybe they can learn some things, but their change is almost impossible.”
„Almost? So even you thought about this possibility!”
Dedra sighed. „Yes, but their appearance will be similar to the trees. Just growing some limbs as those ents or what... I think...”
Dedra’s answer made it obvious he already did some research on this subject. Even if the world wanted to turn upside down, he would be prepared.
Klaye sighed and looked around. His eyes stopped on the zombie. He still stood in the door without moving. „... When did he learn to speak?”
„Oh, you finally ask this?” Dedra shook his head. „Was your medical examination correct? Didn’t you hit your head?”
Klaye looked at him blankly. „I’m okay...”
„The zombie’s virus is different because it needs to reproduce the dead cells. It’s a long process, but it can speed up by eating others... This reproduction ability makes it deadly for living beings.”
Klaye nodded and chose to shut up. He couldn’t understand these scientific things.
