Chapter 003
Become CEO of Overpowered Hero Clan – 003
The office was a 30-minute drive from Isaac’s apartment. The warm lighting illuminated the ornamental work, and the two divided black and white masses on top of it gave a unique atmosphere.
This modern 5-story building was the headquarters of Isaac’s clan, [Harmony].
“Hmm.”
My head started to feel overwhelmed. While I was excited about how the game I enjoyed would be implemented, my immediate concern and unease were much greater.
“Hello!”
“You’ve arrived!”
As I entered the headquarters with clenched fists, employees I had never seen before greeted me. They seemed a bit formal. I felt burdened.
I nodded expressionlessly and quickened my pace. I didn’t want to give them a chance to strike up a conversation.
I headed straight for the 5th-floor executive office, which was adorned with marble.
It had a formal and authoritative atmosphere that was far from my taste.
I felt like I should bring a few colorful paintings to liven it up.
“Please review. It’s today’s schedule.”
As soon as I sat down, the secretary named ‘Hwang Bo-ra’ who had been guarding the front of the executive office handed me the schedule.
A tense moment.
Swallowing dry saliva, I opened the file.
There was a team leader meeting at 10 a.m. and an external appointment at 2 p.m.
“… Security mission?”
However, this external appointment didn’t sound very pleasant. It seemed that I had to perform security mission at an event starting from my first day at work.
By the way, as I tried to see the details, a thin system window was overlaid on top.
[Mission – Event Security]
▶ Difficulty: Normal
▶ Content: On June 8th, 20XX at 2:00 p.m., please provide security for citizens at the book launch event of Congressman ‘Jeong Gil-sang’ held at the Sangrok City Beedam Art Hall.
▶ Commission Fee: 30 million won
▶ Reward: 100 points
What’s with the reward points? This is a concept that didn’t exist in the game either. Is this a privilege of the possessed?
I have a feeling that these points might be used as currency to buy useful items later on.
‘But more than that…’
The mission content… It doesn’t just seem troublesome; it looks quite dangerous. Can’t the members handle this on their own without me? Especially on my first day at work, I doubt I can handle it properly even if ordered to do so.
“After the event, your schedule is clear. You can go to dinner with the Congressman as it is.”
“I find that bothersome.”
“Excuse me?”
“The condition is not good.”
A dinner appointment with a congressman. It’s a situation with more cons than pros. Even if I go, we’ll just be bothered by each other rather than accomplishing anything.
“Oh my, are you still uncomfortable? Shouldn’t you go to the hospital?”
“I’ll manage on my own.”
I closed the schedule and dismissed the secretary. My heart felt troubled.
To perform a real mission like event security at a team leader level meeting from the first day at work. Nothing seems easy.
‘Should I wake up now…?’
One hour into this world’s workday, I realized a very important fact.
[Stress has accumulated.]
[Your immunity has decreased.]
Doing anything seems to pile up stress. Whether it’s looking at office work for a moment, exchanging greetings with a team leader who recognized me, or reading comments criticizing the Harmony clan… The real-time accumulation of stress was calmly conveyed by the system message.
“It’s probably because of this.”
「Boredom Genius」
▶ Category: Charisma
▶ Grade: Hero
▶ Effect: Efficiently performs tasks and missions with a genius brain. However, becomes lazy and susceptible to stress. People will perceive you as a lazy slacker due to this behavior.
‘The penalties are quite severe.’
Boredom Genius.
The charisma I equipped just before possession.
It was known in the community for being reasonably effective, but now it seems overly sensitive.
The effect seems to have increased my thought processes, but I can’t afford to let my mental state deteriorate further. I can’t afford to develop an ulcer from stress; I can’t risk decreasing my already limited lifespan.
‘I need a thorough survival strategy.’
Minimal effort in labor.
Maximize results.
Optimize energy efficiency.
Rest a lot, work a little, and make a big show. Fortunately, my brain seems to have been enhanced to ‘genius’ level, so I will establish a behavior pattern optimized for penalties before succumbing to stress-induced ulcers.
‘First things first.’
I decided not to hold back what I wanted to say.
Before heading into the team leader meeting, I analyzed the working habits of each team. Sure enough, these people were only collecting their salaries.
“Support Team Leader.”
“Yes!”
“Submit the report again.”
I tossed the three-page report onto the table.
Though it might sound harsh to the gentleman who appears to be of age, I have a duty to fix the mentality of the salary squanderers who don’t do their jobs properly. Otherwise, the clan won’t run properly, and that means my death.
“Yes?”
“Update the internal layout of the art hall, provide a list of key figures attending the event, and add evacuation routes for emergencies during the ceremony. Have it sent by 1 p.m. today.”
“That… the time is a bit tight—”
– Bang! –
I slammed the table. My palm felt a bit cold, but I needed to say what needed to be said. This team leader carelessly handled a task that was a matter of life and death for me. Giving excuses about time delays is not acceptable.
“Go out immediately and rewrite it. Do you understand?”
“Yes! I-I apologize.”
The support team leader hurriedly left the conference room.
My heart was pounding like crazy. But my mind was sharp and telling me what needed to be done.
Next up was the PR team.
The PR team leader had been expressionless since before, and it seemed like he had no intention of hiding his dissatisfaction.
During the team leader meeting, and especially not in front of the executives, this attitude was inappropriate. Even small and medium-sized companies with low job satisfaction didn’t behave this way toward their CEO.
“PR Team Leader.”
“Please, go ahead.”
A prickly tone.
This person probably belonged to the category that ignored or resented me, no, the former Isaac. For whatever reason, it seems like I need to give them some time.
“Why hasn’t the PR team presented a single HMV (Highlight Movie) yet?”
HMV, a unique system of Clan of Heroes.
Among the five evaluation criteria that determine the reputation of heroes, there are ‘National Evaluation’ and ‘Brand Value.’ If you don’t pay attention to these two criteria, even if you diligently train and fight villains and monsters, the hero’s reputation will remain stagnant for months.
And to raise and maintain the popularity of a hero, the essential promotional method is HMV. In simple terms, it’s a well-edited video of heroes fighting villains or monsters, combined with music. However, due to some backyard experts doing secondary creations, the developers had to create a separate ‘Monthly HMV Ranking Board’ and even link the ranking to the in-game hero reputation.
I knew this well because I was one of those backyard experts.
“…”
The PR team leader’s expression twisted slightly.
Although I could feel the sentiment of ‘Why am I being scolded when it’s not my responsibility?’
from the team leader’s face, I needed to address this rebellious attitude.
“Although there hasn’t been a budget allocation until now…”
“If that’s the only reason, then I have no reason to keep you employed.”
“…”
“Suggest projects on your own initiative and demonstrate your value through your achievements.”
Contrary to my worries, the words flowed smoothly. I knew exactly what to say and what results this would yield.
“Sorry.”
“Submit a draft within three days.”
“Umm…”
The PR team leader’s anger seemed to subside a bit due to my blunt remarks. Although this person likely saw me as a money-rich sucker ATM who knows nothing about practical matters, from now on, they need to demonstrate results commensurate with their salary.
I need to push them hard so I can survive.
Hopefully, I can work diligently with the stamina I’ve accumulated so far and contribute at least a little to eliminating the ‘Black Company’ status of the Harmony Clan.
“The same applies to other teams. In future meetings, please provide specific accomplishments. However, let’s have meetings every other week. The schedule will be shared through Secretary Hwang. That’s all.”
***
The first meeting ended without incident. My heart was still pounding. I wondered if I had been too forceful on the first day, but I felt relieved inside.
“Phew.”
I leaned back in my chair as if lying down. Slowly, I started feeling the effects of the charisma penalty. My head began to ache, and I could feel tension in my neck. I no longer felt like doing anything. I seemed to have expended a lot of energy during the team leader meeting. Isaac’s body, exposed to stress, had become suddenly lethargic.
– Knock, knock –
The door opened slightly.
“Um… Director?”
Secretary Hwang entered quietly. It seemed like he was being cautious, noticing that my state was different from usual. But what could I do? If I worried about how others perceived me, I’d end up with a stress-induced headache.
I had to put on a brave face and act like nothing was wrong.
“Uh.”
“Are you… alright?”
“Um, did you send the data?”
“Yes, you can check it right away.”
“Thank you. Go back to work.”
I dismissed Secretary Hwang and opened the data I received via email. There were two requested documents: one about the villain alliance [Dark Redemption Regiment] (DRR) and another about the hidden monster ‘Rift Leader.’
The Dark Redemption Regiment (DRR), a villainous alliance, played a significant role in the Clan of Heroes Season 1 story. Understanding how much they were wreaking havoc would help me accurately estimate the ‘time period’ of the Clan of Heroes world I was now part of.
‘I can make a rough guess.’
The world was in a relatively peaceful era. There was no information anywhere about the Alien that appeared from Clan of Heroes Season 2 onwards, known as the ‘Legion.’
Based on my account status, the timeline of this world corresponded to Clan of Heroes Season 1.
‘I can’t afford to miss the hidden pieces.’
And the monster ‘Rift Leader’ dropped the first hidden piece. I still didn’t know if there were other users besides me. If I had no competitors, naturally, all kinds of high-performance hidden pieces would be mine.
“Ugh.”
I stretched as I tried to read the data with my charisma-enhanced brain, but…
– Zing.
–
“Hmm… is this too much?”
As soon as I read the first page, a throbbing headache attacked me. I shouldn’t roll my head anymore; it felt like it could explode.
I can’t work for a day or two like this. Plus, I have the security mission later. I need to clear some brain capacity.
It would be a big problem if the headache worsened during the mission.
“I better leave early.”
It was already 11:25 AM.
Lunchtime was almost over.
I should eat quickly and get a preliminary understanding of the field. It was my first mission, so if I wanted to avoid making mistakes, I needed to prepare diligently.
– Swoosh.
–
Before leaving the office, I checked my appearance in the full-length mirror. My eyes looked like frozen dumplings. It was surprisingly fascinating, enhanced by the aura of decadence due to my flushed face.
“Yawn.”
I yawned. My mind said to work, but my body wanted to rest.
I have to continue using the charisma [Boredom Genius] from now on, so I need to gradually figure out how to manage this overwhelming job stress.
“It’s quite heavy.”
I guess I’ll have to cancel tonight’s plans. My personality probably isn’t suited to entertaining others well anyway.
