Chapter 65
That morning, Shu Jintian had eaten a meal caught by the little snakes. Even though it was the same type of food, because it was caught for them by the little snakes, Shu Jintian felt like the flavour was especially unique, and his heart was warm while eating.
After eating two meals of white rice, the supply seemed to have halved. To gather the grains as fast as possible, Shu Jintian began firing a large pottery vat right that day. What he used was the black clay with the highest rate of success. As the vat was too large, it wasn’t easy to finalise, so he moulded a sufficiently large clay pot after the clay dried somewhat.
The molded vat opening was one metre in diameter, and its belly was approximately one point five metres large, and could store a lot of grain. If it succeeded, Shu Jintian planned to make a few more; it was best if he could conserve at least a year of grain. But he did not know whether there was enough in that place; if there wasn’t, he himself would plow a patch of land and plant rice.
After the vat was almost done drying, Shu Jintian disliked its exterior for being not beautiful enough, and used a flat wood to smoothen the vat’s surface before placing it on the blaze to be fired.
A few large rocks were placed by the bonfire, in order to position the clay pot that needed to be fired. Under the blazing sun, the dried firewood burnt a blazing flame, heating the bottom of the clay pot to a fiery red, and Shu Jintian’s face, reflecting red, was covered in sweat.
On this day, Shu Jintian did not follow Shu Hanyu to look for food, and just kept watch over the fired pot. The fire died out only during dusk, and the clay pot that was test-fired declared a success.
The fired vat was thoroughly black, its surface was a little coarse, and because Shu Jintian’s skill in moulding a circular vat was limited, the shape of it wasn’t very regulated. Some places were flat and some were bulging. Disregarding the problem of the shape, it was still considered a usable vat. Shu Jintian gently tapped on the pot’s belly with a finger, and it emitted a muffled ‘dong dong dong’. Just hearing the sound informed him that this vat was a success.
Because he did not fire it in a sealed environment, the vat didn’t form a beautiful glaze layer, and only the jar base closest to the blaze had formed a glossy glaze, and the upper parts were a little coarse to the touch, but it did not affect the vat’s quality.
A glaze layer at the bottom of the vat just happened to make it moisture-proof, and this glaze layer was formed just perfect.
Shu Hanyu felt distress over Shu Jintian being covered in sweat over the heat, and he wanted to help, but the overly high temperature around the bonfire made him shrink back. He could only act as a supporting role and gather firewood.
After making the pot to store grain, the rice at home was also finished. Shu Jintian took Shu Hanyu to the rice patch to gather rice.
Early in the morning, Shu Jintian took the time while the sun wasn’t too vicious to bring along the clay pot that had just been made and came to the rice stalk patch with Shu Hanyu.
It had only been two days but the grain in the patch had become even more mature, falling disorderly in the rice stalk patch and creating a golden-bright layer. The tip of the rice stalks still had some few, moistening the rice pods and making it convenient for Shu Jintian to gather rice.
Shu Jintian picked up a stalk of rice stalk with his bare hands. The dampened rice pods wouldn’t easily rupture and there were much lesser grains wasted. The sounds of explosions also weren’t as crisp as when it was dry.
“Hanyu, looks like it’s best to gather this rice in the morning. We should be quick. Help me pluck some leaves from the tree ba, I’ll put the rice stalks on them.
Shu Jintian picked a rice stalk and carefully put it on the ground, doing his best to avoid the rice pods from rupturing.
“Alright, Tiantian shouldn’t be too rushed. I’ll come help when I’m done.” Shu Hanyu said, then turned into a Spiritual Snake, nimbly climbing up the tree. The deftness of his body wasn’t any less than the lithe snakelets.
“It should be enough. This much is fine for now ba.” Shu Jintian accepted the tree leaves in Shu Hanyu’s hands. Unexpectedly, Shu Hanyu looked to be holding them effortlessly, but the leaves were in fact not light at all. When Shu Jintian took the leaves, it was so heavy it dragged him to the ground.
“Then Tiantian rest ba, I’ll pick the rice stalks.” Shu Hanyu casually pushed Shu Jintian, the overly forceful strength nearly overturning Shu Jintian again.
Shu Jintian was long used to Shu Hanyu’s great might and took a step back to stabilise himself before rolling his eyes at Shu Hanyu.
“Then let’s pick them together ba. Be careful not to drop the grains; I’ll spread out the leaves first.” Shu Jintian did not bother with Shu Hanyu’s mistake, hugging the tree leaves and walking to a level area and spreading them piece by piece, then laying the rice stalks he had picked down to dry. The moved rice stalks immediately produced crackling sounds and dropped some white grains.
“Okay.” Shu Hanyu looked at Shu Jintian tenderly, then worked hard in plucking rice stalks.
Shu Hanyu’s strength couldn’t be compared with Shu Jintian’s. With the sight of his hands grabbing a large fistful each, with a gentle squeeze, the rice stalks were yanked up and white grains scattered all over the ground. Shu Jintian felt his heart hurt.
Oh lord! My rice~
Shu Hanyu became their active manual labour, while Shu Jintian did some deft matters, moving the rice stalks Shu Hanyu picked to the leaves to dry before he continued picking. When they stored enough rice stalks, the rice pods spread on the leaves had also dried. Shu Hanyu thus took a stick and beat the rice stalks. The bursting sounds of the rice pods echoed nonstop as the white rice clattered down, covering the sounds of Shu Hanyu’s wasteful manner. Shu Jintian’s heart finally became much more at ease.
Shu Jintian loaded all the grains he beated into the pot, and then spread out the rice stalks Shu Hanyu had just picked out again. It wasn’t long before Shu Jintian was panting from exhaustion, but seeing Shu Hanyu working so hard, he found it hard to take a rest, so he could only use all his willpower and continue picking the rice stalks.
Shu Jintian’s cheeks were reddened by the scorching sun, and his rattan clothes were soaked from the sweat. Sweat snaked down the outline of his body and tickled him. But his hands were dirty, so Shu Jintian could only casually swipe himself with his arm and then continue picking rice stalks with Shu Hanyu.
Once Shu Hanyu saw Shu Jintian, he said in distress, “Tiantian should go sit under the tree for a while ba. I’m also very quick alone.”
“No need. It’s better if we do it together so we can finish up sooner. Also, I have to train my body ah!” Shu Jintian flexed his arms jokingly. His skin, bare under the sun, was reddened and burning hot, and was soaked by sweat.
“Alright.” Shu Hanyu was helpless and could only quicken up some more. The crudely picked rice stalks had grains clattering to the ground, and the ground was covered in visible specks of white dots. Shu Jintian thought to himself that these rice grains that fell to the ground were also considered seed stock for the next season, and thus did not stop Shu Hanyu.
Under their concentrated efforts, they had fully filled up a large pot of rice before noon, and the rice stalks they had picked had only taken up a small area. It could be assumed that the rice here was enough for him to eat for a year.
After Shu Jintian tidied up everything, he exhaustedly rested beside the rice jar.
“Tiantian is tired ba. I’ll carry you back ba!” Shu Hanyu wiped off the sweat on Shu Jintian’s face in distress. It was burning hot to the touch, to the point it was frightening.
“Thank you, but I can go back on my own. You have to carry this pot of rice back ah, I can’t move it at all.” Shu Jintian was so tired he was sticking his tongue out like a dog, resting against Shu Hanyu’s body bonelessly. Shu Hanyu’s ice-cold body felt pleasantly cool when he plastered against it, like an ice cube.
Shu Hanyu conveniently embraced Shu Jintian and helped fan him to dissipate the heat. Shu Jintian rested for a long time before getting up to go home. After resting a while, he felt even weaker, and his legs kept shaking while they walked.
Upon coming home, Shu Jintian took a warm bath by the river, then crawled into bed and slept like the dead.
Shu Hanyu looked at Shu Jintian’s sleeping posture that had no form at all and quietly said, “Silly, I already told you not to force yourself. Sleep well, I’ll go find some food and cook for you.”
Shu Jintian sleepily responded, and then passed out. While he was sound asleep, he felt something cold and smooth crawling his body. It wasn’t the strength Shu Hanyu had. Shu Jintian jerked awake instantly. At a glance, it turned out to be a few green snakes.
“Little snakes, you’re here!” When Shu Jintian saw that it was them, he relaxed and dotingly stroked the little snakes’ heads.
Out of the corner of his eye, Shu Jintian caught a glimpse of three small-sized prey set by the bed. This was caught by them again ba!
“In the future, you guys should only care about feeding yourselves. That dad of yours is really good at hunting. When hunting, you guys can follow him and learn more.” When Shu Jintian spoke of Shu Hanyu, his lips unconsciously curved.
The little snake spat out its forked tongue and enthusiastically rubbed its head against Shu Jintian’s palm. So warm; why wasn’t it cold now? Even climbing up was super warm ah!
Shu Jintian’s stomach sank. Seeing the green snakes on him, his body stiffened. But looking at the little snakes’ love for him, he didn’t have the heart to push them away either.
With someone leading, the other two little snakes also followed along and climbed onto Shu Jintian. But there was too limited space for them to take up, and they weren’t as small as before. Shu Jintian’s stomach couldn’t contain three snakes together.
The remaining little snakes began pushing each other to be able to climb to Shu Jintian’s stomach. The mood instantly filled with conflict. Soon, two snakes began becoming vexed because they were unable to climb up, and it turned from pushing to chasing away the other with attacks. Two highly raised snake heads were confronting each other and the air grew tense.
Shu Jintian was shocked, not expecting the little snakes’ behaviour to be so explosive. With just this they were soon about to start fighting.
“Don’t make trouble, hurry up and stop,” Shu Jintian snapped angrily, sitting up.
But unexpectedly, it was still fine if he hadn’t moved, but once he did, the balanced confrontation between the two snakes was shattered and they stepped over the balance. The two snakes instantly began attacking, biting at the other.
Shu Jintian was shocked and didn’t know what to do when he saw the other little snake that had not joined the fight suddenly bite at the two snakes. Shu Jintian didn’t have time to think any further and instinctively reached out to stop the other snake. His wrist just happened to reach the little snake’s mouth. The instant it knocked against it came a burst of pain and Shu Jintian cried out in pain.
“Ah!” Shu Jintian jerked his hand back with a frown. Blood spilled out of his wrist and Shu Jintian covered the wound with his other hand, and blood flowed out of the seams between his fingers. The scent of blood wafted through the cave.
Female father! The little snake that had bitten Shu Jintian was startled and crawled to Shu Jintian’s side. Seeing the fresh blood on female father’s hand, its entire snake body was stupefied. After a while, it then stuck out its forked tongue, licking up the balloon on female father’s hand with a sss. He initially wanted to teach a lesson to the two brothers who had troubled female father, but unexpectedly female father himself bumped into his mouth.
The two snakes who had been biting until their eyes had reddened realised that female father was injured and bleeding, and finally stopped their battle temporarily, crawling to Shu Jintian’s side in concern.
Shu Jintian clutched the wound and the blood soon stopped. Looking at the bed of little snakes looking at him with concerned eyes, Shu Jintian couldn’t bring himself to be angry.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, I’m fine already. You guys shouldn’t fight.” Shu Jintian looked at the three green snakes who weren’t small anymore on the bed, a little distressed.
No wonder Spiritual Snakes all discarded their children. It looked like these snakes truly weren’t suitable for living together. For such a small matter, they began biting at their siblings.
The little snakes looked at female father’s blood-covered hand and knew that they had made a mistake. They all looked at Shu Jintian pitifully, their bodies all trembling and curling up as if the one bitten was them.
“It’s fine. In the future, you have to be good.” The little snakes looked at him pitifully, making Shu Jintian have no choice but to gently reassure them.
The little snake that had bitten Shu Jintian kept licking the blood on female father’s hand, its eyes souring and on the verge of tears.
Shu Jintian smiled at the little snake, then softly sighed.
“Ai! It would be great if you become humans.” Shu Jintian said, then stopped talking. Forget it, it was already good enough if they could grow up healthy.
The little snakes didn’t react to Shu Jintian’s words at all. Only the lead snake that had bitten Shu Jintian looked at Shu Jintian, wordlessly expressing its doubt: Like male father? If we become a human like male father, could we also be powerful like male father? Then always be with female father?
Suddenly, the little snake deep in its thoughts became vigilant, spitting its tongue out with hisses. The other two little snakes also followed along and turned alert, stretching their bodies taut as they looked at the leader little snake nervously.
“What’s wrong? Is there some danger?” Shu Jintian couldn’t help growing solemn, raising his head to look at the entrance.
The little snake withdrew its vigilant gaze, looking at female father reluctantly. Male father had returned; he would definitely be angry if he saw them come in and had even bitten female father. Male father would definitely bite them to death.
Finally, licking Shu Jintian’s face again, the little snake led the other two Spiritual Snakes to swiftly leave the cave. Instantly, the three little snakes disappeared without a trace, leaving behind Shu Jintian standing blankly at the center of the cave alone.
Were they really his children? Clearly they were so filial, yet they abandoned their father and ran off just like this upon running into danger?
