Chapter 40-1
We arrived at our destination and entered the Warp Gate in the auditorium, under the control of the student council.
“Whoa!”
The surrounding scenery changed in an instant, just like the Warp Gate used in David’s territory.
I knew it beforehand, but it was all a forest.
The view from the window was like being in a jungle, with trees everywhere and the ground made of soil instead of concrete.
“Hey! Kane, do you see something installed between those trees?” Jenny pointed with her hand.
We turned our heads and saw a small crystal bead installed between the trees.
How did she spot something that small so quickly? I knew she had good eyesight, but I was still impressed.
“I think it might be for accident prevention.”
“Definitely. It seems that way.”
Eileen nodded in agreement with my words.
By the way, when will the assessment start?
As I was thinking about it, William called out to us all.
“Ha! Gather around this way.”
We approached William as there was no one from our class who had arrived before us.
Time passed in this state.
After our group, only one more group from our class arrived and no more.
What’s going on? Is this it?
William seemed to hear my inner thoughts as he spoke.
“Okay. Everyone’s here.”
“… Really? Is this really the end?”
At Jenny’s bewildered question, William nodded his head.
“Uh, this is all that was signed up for the first assessment, but that’s not the point anyway, and before I explain the rules of the performance assessment, I want you all to put on these bracelets.”
William handed us a bracelet from the dimensional ring, which looked complex with inscriptions for different spells, and advanced recovery spells, as well as point accumulation.
“If you use this bracelet to defeat monsters in the forest, you’ll accumulate points. By doing so, your accumulated points will be added up for your performance evaluation score. Any more questions?”
“Yes! Me!”
As usual, Jenny raised her hand in a lively voice.
“Yes, go ahead.”
“I have two questions. First, where is the designated area for the transfer?”
“The transfer is designated to the building we’re currently in.”
“Um…is it safe here?”
Well, it’s not unreasonable for her to worry, given that there’s a building like this in the middle of the forest.
Honestly, there’s no guarantee that the monsters won’t attack here if they happen to pass by.
Of course, that’s assuming that the building is the only thing around.
“Don’t worry about that. We’ve put up a barrier outside to prevent monsters from entering.”
“Oh! Then it’s safe! And I have one more question…what level are the monsters around here?”
“I know what you’re worried about. There are only low-level monsters, so there’s no need to worry.”
“Oh, that’s a relief. If the rumor spreads that I was killed by a low-level monster, it would be so embarrassing.”
If Jenny were to be killed by a low-level monster, it would be pretty humiliating.
Typically, low-level monsters only include the weak mobs commonly found in fantasy comics, such as goblins, slime, skeletons, and so on.
Of course, it’s not easy for ordinary people to deal with these creatures, but to the students of the prestigious Academy on the Leyton Continent, it’s no different from fighting insects.
“Okay, then I’ll assume there are no more questions. The performance evaluation will begin in 10 minutes. Now, You are all on your own now, do your best.”
With those words, William sat down on a nearby chair, as if he was too lazy to do anything else, and closed his eyes without hesitation.
Wow. He’s really thinking hard here.
***
Before we knew it, ten minutes had passed and the performance evaluation had begun.
We immediately left the camp without hesitation.
“Eileen, are you going to use your ‘Presence Detection’ ability right away?”
“Well, I’m not sure. I feel like it’s a waste to use it right away.”
“Right.”
Jenny nodded in agreement with Eileen’s response.
Well, to be honest, the monsters in the forest could wander around without a care in the world, but they’ll definitely start hiding soon because they’re scared of Royal Academy students.
So, it’s a bit of a waste to use up our strength right now to use our perception ability.
However, that only applies to our perception ability.
“Don’t worry. I have a magic that can find nearby monsters without using up our strength.”
“Huh? Is that true?”
“Yeah. Just wait, I’ll find one soon.”
Without hesitation, I raised the volume to around 70 or 80.
-Crackle!
I heard the sound of something rustling through the grass about 50 meters to the left. I returned the volume to its original state, and turned my head in that direction.
“I found it. It’s over here.”
The two followed me, looking surprised that there really was a monster.
It was a green creature about the size of a middle school student, known as a goblin, that was wandering around.
They looked at me with surprised faces, not expecting to really find a monster.
This is the power of volume adjustment!!
“Well then, who will catch it first?”
Before I could even ask who would catch it first, Eileen took out a sharp sword from her dimensional ring with a stern expression.
“Kane. I’ll be the one to reach it first.”
“Ooh!”
She’s full of enthusiasm.
-Fuu
Eileen took a short breath and swung her sword horizontally like a dance step.
-Crunch?
Without even realizing her sword’s strike, the goblin’s head and body separated in two.
Wow, that was really clean.
To put this into perspective, even knights who have undergone arduous training on the royal road would leave uneven cuts when using a sword. However, the goblin split apart cleanly like it was cut with a razor when Eileen swung her sword.
It was a moment when I once again realized that she was the heroine in the game.
As I was surprised, Jenny looked at me with a proud expression, as if her own daughter had grown up so well.
“As expected of our Eileen. If we leave the hunting to her, she will take the top spot.” – Jenny
“Wow… you’re amazing.” – Kane
“Why?! What’s the big deal?! It’s just natural for friends to help each other out.” – Jenny
“No, it’s not just because we get along well. Friends are supposed to help each other out in the first place.” – Kane
“Uh, Huh?!” – Jenny
Jenny seemed a bit surprised that I agreed with her.
Honestly, when else would I get on the bus if not now?
So, Driver Eileen! Please drive the bus well!!
