Chapter 73: “She Won’t Hit Me, Right?”
Chapter 73: "She Won’t Hit Me, Right?"
The rolling thunder appeared, like the signal for battle.
Whizz, whizz~!
The bowmen and crossbowmen, who had already drawn their bows, loosed a volley of arrows and bolts.
They pierced the night sky, heading straight for the enemies.
Thud, thud, thud~!
The sound of arrows striking flesh echoed as three or four mercenaries were hit and collapsed instantly.
Before they could scream or cry out, more arrows struck them, leaving them motionless.
The fuse on the rolling thunder reached its end.
Second Squad Captain Tulisa stepped forward, waving her staff.
Two blasts of air instantly enveloped the rolling thunder, freezing it into a solid block of ice.
Bang, bang~ crack~!
The rolling thunder exploded like a dull thud, only cracking the ice like a spiderweb, with some smoke seeping through the fissures.
It had no effect on the battlefield.
“You’ve made a mistake, and now I’m very angry. That’s not good for your city…” The voice of the man they had spoken to earlier came from inside the room.
Whizz, whizz~!
Arrows whistled through the air from inside the room.
The squad members dodged while simultaneously counterattacking.
"Prepare the poison gas grenades!" First Squad Captain Arnell shouted.
Slater glanced over and shook her head slightly.
According to Wu Heng’s information, there might be children inside, and the poison gas grenades could cause irreparable harm to them.
But the shout still intimidated the people inside the room.
“My pets, drain the blood of those outside. Go, all of you.” The man’s whisper echoed again from inside.
Buzz~ hum!
In the dim moonlight, it seemed as if a dense fog was pouring out of the windows and doors of the building, accompanied by a buzzing sound that quickly filled the courtyard.
"Watch out for poisonous insects!" a scout on the wall shouted.
Everyone’s faces changed.
The swarm of poisonous insects, like a dark cloud, blocked out the moonlight.
In an instant, the swarm engulfed several soldiers from the guard.
"Ah~! It hurts, help!"
"What is this? It’s all bugs!"
The soldiers fell to the ground, rolling and scratching their bodies as they began tearing off their armor, pulling out handfuls of insects.
"Pull them back!" the First Squad Captain shouted.
He tore open a scroll, and flames ran along his sword as he swung it, releasing a crescent of fire that swept through the sky.
The Second Squad Captain took a deep breath, his chest swelling as he exhaled a white mist into the air. The mist solidified into countless ice beads that fell like rain.
Frozen inside the ice beads were countless black flying insects.
The other members either cast spells or used scrolls.
At the same time, they dragged the bug-covered soldiers to the back of the group, helping to clear away the insects.
"They’re trying to escape!" shouted a ranger who was sharing the vision of his bird.
Several figures bolted from the front of the building, splitting up and running toward the walls.
Whizz, whizz~!
Arrows flew again.
Several figures were pierced instantly.
"Kulo!" Slater called softly.
The panther at her feet turned into a blur, rushing forward.
In the blink of an eye, it reached one of the fleeing figures, leaping up and tearing out the enemy’s throat.
Then, it quickly moved to another, clamping down on an ankle and dragging the person off the wall, biting down on the throat.
"One got away," the ranger continued to shout.
"First and Second Squads, follow me! Third Squad, secure the area and search for the children."
Whoosh~!
The group moved into action, following orders.
.........
"Hmph! If Yazde hadn’t been suddenly reassigned, my aunt would be the Deacon of Blackstone Town," Yuli grumbled, crossing her legs in frustration.
"The guild’s headquarters makes the appointments. It’s not like you had a say in it," Wu Heng retorted.
"It should’ve been my aunt. Yazde was suddenly placed here and took the position. You don’t know anything," Yuli pouted.
Slater indeed had significant influence in Blackstone Town.
She was respected both in the underworld and by the authorities, making it necessary to give her a position. Otherwise, leaving her to run things in the underworld could have caused more trouble.
"Oh, I see." Wu Heng responded absentmindedly, not interested in arguing about who should be the Deacon.
It didn’t concern him, and it had little to do with him personally.
"Hmph, you wouldn’t understand," Yuli continued, scooting closer. "That skill you have, the one that makes dead people talk, is pretty handy. It’ll make solving murder cases a lot easier."
"True, but we have to keep it secret. If the killers find out, they’ll destroy the bodies, and then we’ll have to deal with a pile of talking mush. That would be creepy!"
"Ew~! That’s disgusting."
"Just an example. We need to keep things quiet and work in secret."
"Alright, next time there’s a case, count me in!"
As they talked, Xiaoxiao, in her invisible form, returned to Wu Heng’s body.
The next moment, the scene of the recent battle appeared in his mind.
Thud!
Suddenly, there was a loud thud outside the window.
Wu Heng and Yuli looked out and saw a man of medium build jump into the courtyard.
Yuli frowned.
Wu Heng immediately drew his gun and fired several shots at the figure below. Bang, bang, bang!
The sharp crack of gunfire shattered the night’s silence, and with the effect of the "Hunter’s Ring," Wu Heng’s aim was dead-on.
Several bullets struck the man’s body instantly.
Barson leaped from the second floor, pouncing on the wounded enemy.
Yuli quickly transformed into a terror crow and flew down, then changed into a giant bear, charging at the man.
The man looked on in terror, unable to comprehend why there was an ambush here.
Thud, thud, thud!!
The giant bear charged forward, slamming the man into the wall.
The man’s body slid down the wall.
The bear crouched down, slamming its massive paws onto the man’s chest.
At that moment, Slater entered the courtyard with her team. She glanced at the lifeless body and waved her hand slightly.
A team member stepped forward and checked, "He’s dead."
Slater sighed in relief.
She glanced at Yuli and Wu Heng.
Then she addressed her team, "Search the area and clean up the battlefield."
The group immediately spread out, following her orders.
Soon, the squads and the guards finished up.
All the enemies were dead, and no other suspicious targets were found.
The enemy’s bodies were loaded onto carts, ready to be transported back.
Second Squad Captain Tulisa then led Wu Heng to another cart and pulled back the curtain, revealing three figures inside.
"The three children are fine, just unconscious. Have their parents pick them up from city hall tomorrow."
"Oh, okay. Thank you, Captain Tulisa."
"Next time, discuss things with your captain before dragging Yuli around. The Deputy Deacon will see you tomorrow," Tulisa added.
Wu Heng glanced back and saw Yuli being ushered onto a cart.
She didn’t forget to wave at him.
Wu Heng waved back.
Tulisa dropped the curtain and said, "Head back home, and be careful on the way."
"Will do."
The squad escorted the carts away.
Wu Heng and Barson headed back to the crowded district.
.........
The next day, Wu Heng went to see the landlord first.
He told him that they had found the children and that they could be picked up at city hall.
They had found three, so he suggested checking if any other families had lost children, so they could go together.
The landlord was shocked by the news.
The guards hadn’t found them, and they had told the families to give up hope, but Wu Heng had actually brought the children back.
And so quickly!
His tenant really had some skills.
After some awkward praise, the landlord went to notify the mother.
Wu Heng planned to head back and return to the zombie world.
Just as he turned to leave, he saw Yuli standing at the door, her eyes slightly red. "You here to see me?"
"My aunt wants to see you."
"Huh? Because of yesterday?"
Yuli nodded.
"Did she hit you?"
Yuli nodded again.
"She won't hit me, right?"
