Chapter 46
Early morning.
Having slipped out of bed, I resolved my meal in the inn’s first-floor dining room while finishing up the reading I couldn’t complete yesterday.
“The end of the world, huh…”
Through the book, I gained various knowledge about the language and culture of elves, the war between dark mages and elves, and more. However, the most intriguing detail was undoubtedly the Storm Wall, said to be at the world’s end.
No witnesses, merely legends passed down through drawings, writings, and oral traditions since time immemorial. Legends that change depending on the taste of those who tell and record them.
What part of it is false, and where does the truth lie?
Does this storybook really speak only the truth?
I have no answers—at least not until directly confronting the legend.
Elves do exist. The seed of the World Tree is real as well.
The small blessing of wind swirling around me and the warm sensation from my pocket were proof enough.
But what does the Wall of Storms at the world’s end really mean?
This world is round. Much like the Earth, this fact does not change as long as the physical law of gravity exists.
Circling around, one will eventually return to the starting point, yet talk of an end to the world is puzzling.
Coming from a modern mindset, it’s utterly incomprehensible.
But still, shouldn’t I look into it?
I closed the book and stood up.
Stepping out of the inn in light attire, I began to gather information about the end of the world while wandering through various parts of the city.
However, right from the very first step of my information collection, things began to creak and groan, as the places mentioned as the world’s end were not just one.
I spread out a large map and examined regions marked as the end of the world.
First was the northern end, known as the ‘Grimshade Kingdom’, a land ruled by exiled dark mages and the demons who followed them.
It was said that the elves fled after fighting the dark mages, so this couldn’t be it.
Next was the southern end, known as ‘Greenpool’, a land ruled by orcs who revere warriors and honor.
I tilted my head as I examined the Greenpool region.
Unlike the Grimshade Kingdom, where the place names were quite vague, Greenpool had fairly detailed names listed.
It seemed that the relationship between humans and orcs wasn’t as bad as I thought.
I took out a small pencil and circled the area marked as [Valley of Storms].
Next, I looked at the western end, the yet unexplored ‘Monster Island’, where wild mana storms raged, and powerful monsters resided, leaving it as an uncharted territory where strong adventurers endlessly trod.
Similar to the Grimshade Kingdom, this was another location with poorly defined names.
Finally, I turned to the eastern end—the ‘Blue Veil’, a sea filled with thick fog.
It’s a place where no visibility is possible, and countless ships that set off for exploration have vanished without a trace.
Since there had been no returnees, it seemed nobody knew what continent lay beyond that sea’s end.
I stroked my chin while looking at the map.
The book recounting the elves’ tales only mentioned that they moved toward the world’s end, leaving the exact location unknown.
However, using a process of natural elimination, two strong candidates emerged.
Greenpool and Monster Island.
I began to look for ways to head to both regions. I had no plans to linger around here anyway.
As I researched, I found out that ships heading to Monster Island departed from the Karma Empire’s Port roughly every six months, while the land of Greenpool was reachable on foot without needing a boat.
If I leave this city and run endlessly, I will eventually arrive at Greenpool.
The destination was set.
I wandered through the market, purchasing mainly preserved foods that would last as long as possible.
With a large bag slung over my shoulders, I headed towards the inn’s stable.
Nightmare was sleeping, yet unlike the other horses, he had his belly pointed skyward.
As I approached and gently tapped his belly, his big eyes opened slightly.
Nightmare licked his tongue and rolled his bright red eyes around.
“I’m going now. Wake up.”
Thud—
He shook his head as if protesting my words, seemingly wanting to sleep a little more.
Wasn’t this the same guy who wanted to run excitedly just a day ago?
I placed my hands on my hips, glaring at him.
Heeh—
After some time of that glare, Nightmare began to rise while cautiously observing my reactions.
His big, muscular body squirming about was rather cute.
I began to pile up a large load on his back.
Nightmare was sturdy enough to carry more loads than regular packhorses.
Right after fully loading him, I climbed onto Nightmare’s back as if climbing a wall, a method naturally developed due to my small stature.
“Shall we go?”
Nightmare, clearly not pleased with the sudden departure, kicked backward towards the large door as he exited the stable.
With a kick that looked light as a feather, the heavy wooden door cracked wide open and flew away.
The door hit the ground, creating a loud noise that caused even the resting horses to start whinnying.
“Hey…”
Heeh—!
Nightmare bolted forward, sticking out his tongue at me, as if to say he didn’t care.
Like the wind, he skillfully navigated between passing townsfolk, leaping over large carts effortlessly.
With his high-flying movements, all the cargo strapped to his back started bouncing around, hitting me hard on the back.
Faster than the innkeeper could react to the commotion in the stable, Nightmare darted past the large main gate and into the vast plains.
The huge windmills quickly shrank into the distance.
As the grand fields of vibrant flowers disappeared, only the vast agricultural land remained before me.
*
Sometimes on flatlands, sometimes in valleys, at times through mountains.
Nightmare kept running without rest. Thanks to his seemingly endless stamina and speed, we reached the border’s edge ahead of schedule.
The Karma Empire and Kingdom of Oblain are neighboring countries, with their borders connecting.
This region, teeming with people, has become a meeting place due to the influx of adventurers, merchants, and priests’ missionary activities.
Furthermore, it also serves as an escape route for criminals trying to leave the country, which is why the military from both nations stationed themselves at this border area.
“Oh…”
I put down the book I was reading and looked around.
At the end of the Karma Empire’s borders, makeshift tents appeared through the large arched gateway.
As the adventurer guidebook stated, it was indeed a bustling place.
Big wagons hurried back and forth, and the sounds of bargaining voices filled the air from the stalls lining the streets.
“Next!”
Finally, my turn approached.
I led Nightmare toward the grand arched door.
Inside were armored soldiers clad in gleaming armor, blocking the path with halberds, only allowing passage after finishing the departure procedures.
“Hm… alone?”
“Yes.”
I nodded in response to the border inspector’s question, holding my documents.
He briefly scanned the heavy pile of papers before walking over to Nightmare to inspect the cargo.
“This guy… a Hairan breed? What a fine horse.”
My departure process went with no significant issues.
Once the cargo inspection was complete, it was just a matter of displaying the adventurer badge from the Karma Empire.
“Next!”
The next person to undergo inspection was a merchant pulling a large freight wagon.
The border inspector began checking much more thoroughly than when he checked me, and as time dragged on, the merchant’s face turned pale.
How long had it been?
Suddenly, a soldier searching inside the freight wagon shouted loudly.
“I found it!!!”
No sooner had the soldier’s shout burst out than two rugged men with deep scars on their faces dashed out from the toppled boxes within the wagon, each wielding a sword and threatening everyone around them with their pale faces.
However, their rampage didn’t last long.
Soldiers swooped in from all sides, beating the two men to a pulp with thick iron rods.
The battered men were then handed over to the soldiers and taken away.
What a terrifying sight.
I pulled on Nightmare’s reins, hastening my way.
While the exit procedures of each country were relatively swift, the entry procedures were significantly more complex and time-consuming.
On top of that, there was a daily limit on how many people could enter the Kingdom of Oblain, so I wouldn’t be able to enter today.
I wondered if I could slip in with a bribe; I slipped five gold coins into the hands of a soldier standing nearby, but he frowned heavily and began to lecture me.
“Ugh… such a young one already… where did you learn this?”
“Some uncle taught me.”
“Where are your parents? I should speak to them.”
“They’re not here right now.”
“Both mom and dad?”
“Yes.”
“Ugh…”
The Kingdom of Oblain’s soldier began clicking his tongue at my answer.
I looked at him with a strange gaze. He was scolding me, yet he still didn’t return the gold coins in my hand.
It was clear what he wanted. I laughed lightly and slipped two more gold coins into his hand.
With a begrudging expression, he pulled a small wooden token from his pocket and handed it to me.
[Temporary Pass]
“Hmph… what are you waiting for? Hurry up and get going.”
“This pass is expensive.”
“Uhm…”
The soldier stuffed the received gold coins into his pocket and looked away.
I got what I wanted. No longer wanting to provoke him, I pulled on Nightmare’s reins and headed toward the entry inspection for the Kingdom.
Once I received the temporary pass, there was no need to stand in line.
Wandering around nearby, I showed the temporary pass and was immediately allowed to enter through another entrance where soldiers were coming and going.
