Chapter 186
“To think a Magic Book could use Dark Magic on its own… That’s impossible…”
“Is it usually impossible?”
Rain nodded grimly at my question. I strolled alongside her, weaving between the Golden Swords scattered on the ground, stepping on broken bone fragments.
“As far as I know, this has never happened before. To use the powers of the demons in Grimshade Kingdom, the help of a Mana user is essential.”
“Could it be that the demons’ magic has developed? Just like humans?”
“That’s…”
Rain’s expression grew more serious at my response.
All that remained where the Magic Book had shattered was dark ash. I reached out to touch the ash, but no special Mana was felt. This meant it was completely disconnected from Skasha.
Now I understood. Why this incident occurred. Skasha’s voice, urging us to meet again soon, echoed in my mind.
It was a continuation of the events that happened in the Lower Realm. The effect of poking a beehive with a stick had arrived. The angry bees had surely come to this land.
My shoulders felt heavy. My mouth was bitter. I licked my dry lips and let out a small sigh.
At that moment, Rain’s voice called out to me.
“Seris?”
Rain tilted her head while looking at me. I answered with a slight delay.
“Ah, yes.”
“What are you doing? Aren’t you going to investigate?”
Right, investigation comes first. I began to move my head as Rain suggested.
Together, Rain and I began to gather items that appeared to belong to Leonis, while conducting additional searches around the area. We worked diligently to find any remnants of Dark Magic.
The moonlight in the sky gradually retreated, and the surroundings began to brighten. The sun rose, signaling the complete disappearance of the Dark Magic’s influence.
The sunlight illuminating the desert made the countless Golden Swords in the area shine brilliantly. Despite spending a considerable amount of time searching, we found little of note.
Exchanging glances with Rain, I nodded my head.
“It seems everything has been tidied up. I think it’s time to head back.”
“That sounds good… But let’s check Burning Road before we go back.”
“Oh.”
I nodded at Rain’s words. There were soldiers from Burning Road mingled among the Undead we encountered last dawn. Who knows? There could still be another Magic Book left in Burning Road.
Using the Golden Fragrance of Greed, I began to send the multitude of Golden Swords soaring into the sky.
A shimmering wave of gold soared above. The body of the Golden Dragon, taking the shape of a sword, gradually crumbled back into a massive Airship.
“Is that a new spell?”
I shook my head at Rain’s question. Since I wasn’t using Mana, it wasn’t magic. It was merely an embodiment of the power contained within the swords.
“That’s fascinating… Is this also power you gained in the Lower Realm?”
“Yes.”
“That’s amazing…”
Rain gazed up at the sky, lost in admiration. The flow of gold that flew into the azure sky vanished among the clouds.
The distance from here to Burning Road was short. Rather than hastening for an hour, Rain and I chose to travel on Nightmare.
After an hour of travel on Nightmare, we arrived at Burning Road, only to find the city entrance was sealed off. The grim expressions of the guards at the entrance confirmed there was definitely something wrong.
“Stop!”
As we approached to confirm the issue, the guards thrust their spears forward and shouted harshly. It wasn’t surprising; we had expected this reaction.
I smiled gently and waved, just as I had done before.
“Hello there?”
“Um, hmmm…”
The guards relaxed a little at my gentle greeting. However, their spear points still didn’t lower.
“Turn back. We’re not allowing Outsiders in.”
I frowned at the guard’s words. My appearance was something one wouldn’t easily forget. If they didn’t remember me, it meant they weren’t the same guards I met last time.
“I am Seris, a magician affiliated with the Tower of Dawn. This is Rain, a fellow magician like myself.”
I calmly explained the purpose of our visit. I wasn’t here as an Adventurer but as a magician on an assignment from the Mage Tower.
After hearing my explanation, the guards exchanged solemn looks among themselves. Then one of the guards stepped inside the city.
“Please wait a moment.”
The guard who had disappeared for a while returned, his face still stiff, shaking his head decisively to indicate we couldn’t enter.
“What now…”
“Um…”
With Rain and my abilities, there were plenty of ways to sneak past the guards unnoticed. As we debated what to do, a faint memory started to become clear.
“The brooch…!”
“A brooch?”
Ignoring Rain’s question, I began rummaging through my bag. The guards went on high alert again at my sudden movement, but I didn’t care. Once I pulled out the brooch inside, they would surely lower their weapons.
The starlight flickered on the desert, the scorching heat, the new encounters. The small connection I made when I first set foot in this desert had come back around.
I pulled out a small brooch from my bag. It was an eagle-shaped brooch made from blue gemstones, which scattered a subtle green light when held up to the shining sun.
Of course, this brooch was no ordinary item. It was a token that Prince Kashin of this Burning Road Kingdom distributed only to his friends.
“That’s…”
Just as expected. The guards’ expressions turned flustered as they saw the brooch, lowering their spears. Their attitude indicated they recognized the emblem.
“Could it be Prince Kashin’s…?”
“Is it alright if we go in?”
Once I showed them Prince Kashin’s brooch, everything became a free pass. Rain and I managed to slip past the guards and enter the city.
“What the heck is that…? Kashin—isn’t he the prince of Burning Road?”
As we entered the city, Rain looked at me suspiciously. I recalled old memories and answered her.
“I met him a long time ago. I received this back then.”
Speaking of which, did Kashin remember to pass on the gold coins I gave him to my parents back in my hometown?
I felt it was time to check on that.
“Rain, you’re heading to write a report now, right?”
“Yeah. There doesn’t seem to be any major issues in Burning Road, so I planned to move to the Safe House right away.”
“Then, would it be okay if I met Kashin for a bit?”
“Prince Kashin…? How long will it take?”
“I just need to confirm something. It won’t take long. About ten minutes?”
“In that case, I’ll wait at the Safe House.”
Nodding at Rain’s reply, she jumped off Nightmare. With her light movements and mingled weak Mana, she seemed to be using physical enhancement.
“I’ll see you later!”
After parting with Rain, I made Nightmare small and slipped it into my bag so it wouldn’t be noticeable. It might feel cramped in there, but it was unavoidable if I wanted to meet Kashin without being seen.
Pffft—
Inside the bag, something poked its head out, squirming. I chuckled softly and patted its horn, causing it to retreat back into the bag.
As long as I confirmed whether the gold coins I entrusted him were delivered well, I didn’t need to go through all the fuss. I immediately pulled down my hood and summoned a small starlight.
The reappearing starlight circled around me joyfully before darting off towards Kashin, who was somewhere in this country.
Taking a low breath, I activated the Mana within me. I planned to utilize a few techniques I learned through sight in the land of Beastmen.
Breathing as shallow and long as possible, my footsteps needed to be as light as a feather, ensuring that my clothing made no noise as I moved. Once all preparations were completed, my movements began to resemble that of a snake.
Taking a large step forward, as soon as my body slipped out of the alley, I jumped onto a building. Though it was a bold action, no attention fell upon me.
The movements of a snake crawling on the ground were replicated in the air. I swiftly moved forward, stepping lightly on the winds gathering beneath my feet.
As expected, the destination of the star was a grand castle within the city. Following the star that flew to the terrace on the third floor, I met the gaze of a darkly featured man.
An exotic man adorned in splendid clothing and various jewels. It was Kashin.
Kashin stared at me in silence. His eyes flickered, showing signs of significant surprise.
“I’m not dreaming, am I?”
He stepped back a step as he questioned me. I raised my hands to show I wasn’t holding any weapons and began to speak.
“Hello there!”
“It’s not a dream… How on earth did you bypass the guards of the royal castle? You could have just shown the brooch to meet me without going through all this trouble…”
I turned my head to examine the interior of the royal castle in response to Kashin’s question. The security there was indeed quite severe.
“I apologize if I startled you. I had to leave quickly, so I didn’t have time to wait for the procedures.”
“Huh…”
Kashin let out a small sigh at my response. He undid the turban he was wearing and brushed his hair back.
“Right. Seris. What brings you here?”
“I was curious if the gold coins I asked you to deliver arrived safely.”
“Oh…”
Kashin nodded absentmindedly at my question. He frowned and returned the inquiry.
“That’s all you were curious about…?”
“Yes.”
Kashin let out a small laugh at my reply and then responded.
“They were delivered well. Your parents asked about you. They also wondered if I was a potential marriage partner. What on earth happened?”
Marriage partner? What on earth is he talking about… No, from my parents’ perspective, they might think that way. Their daughter who ran away sent a man to deliver money.
I rubbed my forehead and asked Kashin.
“Just family matters… So what did you answer?”
“I obviously said no… Wait. You’re wearing that outfit… you’re not a magician, are you?”
Kashin, who had been answering my question, frowned and asked back. His gaze was fixed on the wizard’s robe I was wearing.
“Yes, well…”
As I nodded in response, Kashin’s dark expression brightened slightly. He wiped his forehead and said to me.
“I was having difficulties as I hadn’t received a reply from the Holy Kingdom, but this works out well. Magicians are supposed to take on requests to hunt Undead and Dark Mages, just like the clergy from the Holy Kingdom, right?”
“Are you asking me to take on a request to hunt a Dark Mage?”
“I’m not sure if there’s a Dark Mage, but lately, there have been frequent appearances of Undead around here, which has been a headache. That’s why we restricted Outsiders from entering.”
“That issue is alright. I was just on my way back after handling it.”
Kashin frowned at my words. He spoke while suppressing a smile on his lips.
“Are you sure? The Undead I’m talking about aren’t just one or two. There are quite a number of Undead wandering this desert.”
There couldn’t be any evidence of the Undead or Dark Mages I had hunted left behind. The most I had was Leonis’s robe and his belongings.
I pulled out the map I had stored in my bag and marked a small dot on it. The location where I dealt with numerous Undead wasn’t far from here. If I went there in person, they would surely believe what I said was true.
“If you still don’t believe me, you can go check there.”
“Wait, a moment…!”
With those words said, I left the map on the terrace and jumped out. Having finished my business, there was no need to linger here any longer.
As I had done when I arrived, I glided through the sky, stepping on the winds.
