Another World Reincarnation Chronicle

Chapter 149

The captain of this ship seemed to have taken quite a liking to me. The cautious demeanor she exhibited at first had completely vanished. Now, she had me sit beside her and treated me to food and drinks.

“My name is Renilla. In this desert, everyone calls me Renilla of the Sandstorm.”

“Oh…”

“What’s your name?”

“I’m Seris. Sadly, I don’t have a cool moniker like yours.”

Actually, I do have some, like Fairy Swordsman or Starlight. But there’s no way I could confidently introduce myself with such embarrassing titles to anyone.

“Hmm. If you’d like, I could give you one… how about it?”

I picked at the hard bread while gauging Renilla’s expression. With her eyes sparkling as she subtly scooted closer to me, it seemed she was quietly hoping for my approval.

Is this how everyone lives in the desert?

“Is it really necessary to have a nickname?”

“Well, it’s not mandatory, but wouldn’t it be nicer to have one?”

It was a request from my benefactor who had given me a ride and provided food and drink. I smiled faintly and nodded.

“What nickname are you thinking of? It better not be something cliché like fairy or flower.”

At my question, Renilla’s lips quivered. It looked like she was planning to give me some words that fell well within my expectations.

“Hmph…”

“Renilla?”

“I think I need a little more time. Please wait.”

I nodded and fed the remaining half of my bread to the shrunk-down Nightmare, then wrapped up our light meal. Afterward, Renilla asked me a question.

“So, how far are you planning to go?”

“I’m heading to Trevel, which is beyond this desert. Where is your Sunny Ship going?”

“Anywhere! As long as the wind blows, we can go anywhere. That’s what makes me Renilla of the Sandstorm!”

With that declaration, Renilla jumped up from her seat. The old, dark red coat she wore flapped wildly in the dry wind coming from the desert. Adjusting her hat, she shouted toward the helm.

“Change the course! Head towards the end of the Golden Desert!”

At Renilla’s command, the ship began to alter its direction. The hull turned sharply, kicking up a billowing sandstorm. I was taken aback by her words. I hadn’t expected her to change the ship’s course because of me.

I was just planning to catch a ride until our paths overlapped; this was really too generous.

“Uh, is it really okay to change the navigation route like that? You can just drop me off halfway…”

“Don’t worry about it, Seris. I just happen to have some business there too.”

“Oh, then… you’re not changing course just because of me, right?”

Renilla nodded at my question. I rummaged through my bag, taking a look at her. She said not to worry, but no matter how I looked at it, it was apparent she changed course because of me. Not many would shower this level of kindness on someone they just met, no matter how smitten they might be with my looks.

All that came out of my bag was a few pieces of dried jerky, an empty water bottle, spare clothes, a rolled-up blanket, and a couple of gold coins I had used in the Celestial Realm. I took those few coins out and handed them to Renilla.

“What’s this…?”

“Well, since you’ve been so generous… it’s a little token of my appreciation.”

“Hmm… but these aren’t the gold coins used here. Where did you get them?”

“They’re gold coins from the Celestial Realm. Mainly used in the Karma Empire…”

“Oh, Celestial Realm gold coins?”

With my explanation, Renilla’s eyes lit up as she received the coins. She held up the shimmering coins high towards the moonlight to check them out.

“Indeed. This design is quite unique. If what you say is true, they should fetch a pretty decent price. Things from the Celestial Realm are quite valuable to collectors… Are you perhaps from the Celestial Realm?”

“Yes. That’s correct.”

“Oh, oh. I see. Do all Celestial beings look like you?”

I pondered briefly at Renilla’s question. In my hometown, my appearance was unmistakably unique. Su and Shu were pretty good-looking too, but they couldn’t compare to me. Even during my adventurer days after running away, there were hardly any who matched my level of beauty. In fact, none did, I suppose.

From my hazy memories, it looked like there were very few iconic faces around.

“No, I doubt there are many as pretty as me.”

“Well, it’s definitely true…”

Renilla seemed very curious about the Celestial Realm. I conversed with her as we enjoyed the wide expanse of the Milky Way, discussing various topics related to it, and Renilla kindly answered any questions I had as well.

“Renilla, how does this ship, Sunny Ship, move above the desert?”

“Huh? What a strange question. Do ships not float above deserts in the Celestial Realm?”

“Uh…?”

“Well, that’s interesting. It’s possible that things might be different in the sky.”

I rubbed my brow and tilted my head in confusion. I hadn’t felt any mana flow while this large ship was in motion, indicating some other power was at play.

It was meaningless to debate how a ship could float above a desert. Renilla treated it as completely normal. As if it were generally accepted fact. Other crew members seemed to feel the same way.

Well, it made sense. There were ships called airships that flew through the skies. In the world I lived in, it wouldn’t be strange for a large ship to float above a desert.

“Does this ship never stop?”

“As long as the wind doesn’t stop, it keeps moving endlessly.”

“Where do you get your food from?”

“Sometimes traders come by. We exchange monster parts we’ve hunted for food. Otherwise, we pillage the supplies from other ships.”

“There are other ships out there, huh?”

Just as Renilla nodded and was about to speak, a crew member from a high lookout shouted loudly.

“Quiet Twilight! Quiet Twilight has appeared!”

“What…!”

Upon the crew member’s warning, Renilla turned with a stiff expression. As I looked on curiously, she spoke urgently.

“Seris, quickly get inside the cabin.”

“Huh?”

“Quickly…!”

As I hesitated, Renilla grabbed my shoulder and pushed me into the cabin. I peeked beside her to gaze at the endlessly stretching golden desert.

A hazy sandstorm was kicking up, revealing the silhouette of a massive ship beyond it. A black pirate flag flapped violently in the wind atop the ship.

In that moment, I heard a loud explosion from a distant location, followed by a flash of light through the sandstorm.

Boom-!

“It’s cannon fire! They’re firing cannonballs!”

The round cannonballs began soaring across the black night sky towards the golden desert. One came flying swiftly and landed near Sunny Ship, causing a violent explosion.

Kaboom-!

The deafening sound shook my eardrums, and the ship lurched violently. The sand that was thrown up high in the air came pouring down, blanketing Sunny Ship’s deck.

“Cough…! Return fire immediately!”

Before Renilla’s order, the crew of Sunny Ship was already moving frantically. They dragged over a massive cannon, loaded it with round shots, and lit the fuse.

As the flame clung to the wick and began to burn into the cannon, a loud bang echoed as it fired the cannonball.

Boom-!

Curses and shouts mixed with screams as Sunny Ship and the ship known as Quiet Twilight exchanged cannon fire repeatedly. At such range, they couldn’t properly land a hit, but nearby cannonballs exploded, making the giant hull shake.

Boom-!

At that moment, cannonballs fired from a higher angle began flying directly toward us. Instinctively, I felt that if we left those cannonballs alone, Sunny Ship’s deck would be blown apart.

Renilla must have sensed this too, as she looked up at the incoming cannonball, her expression one of shock. She drew her sword from her waist, trying to think of something to do, but nothing seemed feasible given the current situation.

If one receives a favor, they must repay it. Without hesitation, I stepped forward and drew the Ice Dragon Sword. The chilling chill spread out rapidly as I gently extended the Ice Dragon Sword toward the swiftly approaching cannonball.

Crack-!

The cold aura of the Ice Dragon Sword engulfed the cannonball. The raging heat inside quickly settled, eliminating the threat of an explosion.

But the energy contained within the cannonball had yet to dissipate. I swung the sword’s tip gently and rotated my body. Strength wasn’t needed. What I required now was pure finesse.

The moment every sense used for swordsmanship became vividly clear, my rotation began from my legs, traveling up through my waist and into my wrist, flowing toward the Ice Dragon Sword.

Swish-!

The power within the cannonball didn’t diminish. Its speed remained the same. Maintaining the force, I extended my sword as if riding the current. When my body began to spiral, the cannonball attached to the Ice Dragon Sword detached and shot off rapidly.

A faint chill filled the surroundings. I gazed at the sword’s tip with a peculiar expression. Until now, I had only hurriedly drawn forth magical powers from my imagination. However, the memories from my past life were not limited to just magic.

“Th-that just now…”

Renilla, half-drawing her sword, looked at me with a shocked expression. The cold aura flowing from her mouth slowly dispersed.

Skill known as “Empowered Refinement.”

Softness triumphed over strength. The two sword techniques that melted into one formed a single shape. The swordsmanship I remembered from my past life glimmered with clarity.

First Form: Taiji

As the dry wind brushed against my cheek, the time that had stopped began to flow once again. A flustered Renilla shouted, urging the crew members.

“Don’t stop! Keep firing! Don’t let them get any closer!”

An idea sparked in my mind, prodding me to hasten to devise the next sword technique. I had to recall as much as possible before this sensation faded away.

I drew the Fire Dragon Sword with my left hand.

Swoosh-

One in each hand. The Fire Dragon Sword and Ice Dragon Sword’s energies mingled, creating a thick fog.
