Chapter 147
I discovered knowledge of magic in a place I never expected. How could I just overlook it? When everyone finished their hunt and returned to the village, I posed a question to Yan.
“Hey. Yan, about the thing everyone in the tribe shouted during the hunt…”
“Oh, you’re talking about borrowing the power of the Wind God?”
“You mean it was the power of the Wind God? Not magic?”
“Magic? Was that magic?”
Yan tilted her head at my question. It seemed she didn’t quite understand what power her tribe was using.
Eventually, I left Yan, who was starting to prepare the snake meat, and headed towards Nephel. He was also processing game with the villagers, and each time his knife brushed against the snake’s body, the black snake skin slid off smoothly.
“Nephel.”
“What is it?”
“How did you use that magic earlier while hunting?”
“Magic? Oh, I see. You mentioned you were from the Celestial Realm, right? Did you perhaps sense the flow of mana?”
Nodding my head, Nephel continued, skillfully peeling off the snake skin.
“It’s simple. Everyone shouted together so that mana would listen to our voices. All of us elves, the spirits, and our companion, the Wind Bird Napus, united.”
“Everyone together…? Why did you do it that way…”
“Of course, you can’t be recognized by mana with just one individual’s presence. So everyone shouted together. We asked Wind God Hiet to create a path for the wind.”
A strong light raced through my mind. They, the Snake Hunter Tribe, resolved their lacking presence by uniting their strength. However, since everyone was combined, they wouldn’t be able to use complex magic. That’s why they invoked the name of a god. They used the name of the powerful being as an incantation. By all recalling that name together, they aligned their desired direction into one.
It was a primitive form of magic.
“… They deceived mana…?”
“Well, if you put it that way, it’s not wrong.”
*
In the deep early morning hours, I lay in the rocking chair, staring blankly at the campfire. The gently flickering flames stretched long, casting shadows that danced within the cabin.
I had discovered how to use magic while in a state of lacking presence. Not as an individual, but as a group, united in one heart and one wish for one mystery. They shouted to call upon mana to notice them.
Incantation.
I wriggled beneath the covers and raised both hands high. My white hands slowly moved as if grasping at empty air.
As I frowned, mana began to gather in my palm. Just as the gathered mana began to take a hazy form, it dispersed with a gentle breeze.
Once more.
“Wind.”
I wished for a gentle breeze, infusing it with mystery. The bluish light that shimmered faintly reacted momentarily, but then scattered again.
A faint smile crossed my lips.
“I want a strong wind.”
This time, I hoped for a stronger wind. The moment my voice flowed out with a definite image to mana, it sparkled once more. However, the wind was still not complete.
“Stronger wind.”
This time, even larger. With a clearer voice. Filled with firm belief. Yet again, the result was the same. As the mana that had gathered on my hand sparkled, it scattered.
Time passed quickly. Just as the cool energy of dawn began to transform into a warmer warmth, the darkness lifted and the sun gradually rose.
The magic flickering tantalizingly before me made my heart race. Seeing that it subtly reacted to the incantation indicated I was not wrong in this direction. I just fell short. I, myself.
I stepped out of the cabin lightly dressed. The refreshing breeze brushed softly past the giant trees. The large leaves fluttered in the wind, giving soft music.
Swoosh—
The golden hair fluttered in the wind. I slowly gathered my breath and drew the Ice Dragon Sword from my waist.
Swish—
The blue and white blade reflected sunlight, casting a cool backlight. I quietly chanted the incantation I had prepared.
“May Kashpa’s chill become a crystal.”
With the mention of the dragon’s name, the moment I infused my strong wish into the incantation, small ice crystals rose around the Ice Dragon Sword. The incantation did not stop there.
“Let it be shot as a ray of light.”
Paba-Bat!
The swiftly flying ice crystal shattered on the tree beneath it. I wore a smile. The length of the incantation was unnecessarily long, and the power of the magic wasn’t that great either. However, the fact that I could use magic alone remained unchanged.
At that moment, I realized. My position in this Lower Realm was just right. To use stronger magic, I needed to become stronger myself.
However, for now, this was enough. Right now, what I needed was a little starlight. The small star that had always been by my side, accompanying me on all my travels.
“Guide me, shining star.”
I wished for a small star. The guiding star that showed me the way.
The moment the short incantation ended, the mana faintly reacted. The small star that began to condense and shine was very small, yet undoubtedly the star that guided me in the desert.
I reached out my hand to clasp the small star.
It was in that moment. A prickling sensation shot through my hair, and the birds called Napus took to the skies in unison.
Peeeee!
The Napus let out a piercing, high-pitched cry. Immediately afterward, from the direction of the canyon, the entire forest began to split.
A snake. A giant snake was rushing through the forest. Its intentions were clear. The direction, gleaming with black scales, was toward this place, the village where the Snake Hunter Tribe and the Napus were staying.
With the warning cries mixed with screams from the Napus, the elves began to rise one by one. Nephel also rushed out with a frantic expression, scanning the area beyond the forest. A single giant serpent was barreling through the woods as if it had uprooted the entire canyon.
The snake that attacked me was indeed big, but compared to that thing, it was nothing more than a drop in the bucket.
“What the hell…! Why is Evolve…”
As Nephel cursed, the massive snake lifted its head. The gigantic head soaring high pierced the clouds and covered the sky, causing massive mana to surge and flip the entire forest upside down.
Kuaaaag!
“Ugh…!”
I frowned as I quickly dashed away. As a result, before the cabin collapsed, I managed to escape with Yan and Nightmare inside.
Dirt, wood, and rocks, which formed the forest, scattered everywhere, and all kinds of monsters, big and small, including elves, flew through the air, losing their balance.
Despite using large-scale magic to overturn the land, the snake swung its gigantic tail, as if its anger had not abated, thrashing about.
Boooom—
The colossal creature swept through. The air burst apart as everything blocking its path vanished. Even though I hadn’t been directly hit by the attack, I was caught in the aftermath, spinning and flying off to a greater distance.
“Ugh…!”
“Y-Yan!”
Peeeee!
Yan, who was clutching me, seemed to understand the situation and called her bird. The instant Paleu, who had spread its enormous wings and soared, snatched us up, dirt and rocks fell from above.
Thud-thud-thud—
As I looked around while atop Paleu, I noticed that most of the Snake Hunter Tribe had mounted their Napus. The giant wings of the Napus were flapping as they began to gather in one place, guided by the wind.
They seemed set on fighting that massive snake. I also drew the Ice Dragon Sword and Fire Dragon Sword, finishing my preparations for battle.
The snake’s bright red eyes swept over everyone flying in the sky. A chilling sensation washed over me, and I swallowed dryly. This was a colossal presence. In this state, where I couldn’t use proper magic, it was an enemy whose victory could not be guaranteed.
“We charge!”
At Nephel’s rallying cry, everyone began to move. As dozens of Napus flapped their wings together, it felt like a storm was brewing, unleashing a massive wind.
I, alongside Nightmare, lay flat on Paleu’s back and hurled the Fire Dragon Sword and Ice Dragon Sword. The two swords flew quickly and struck against the scales of the giant snake.
Kaang!
I frowned. I intended to slice through the scales and reach the flesh beneath, but my blade did not penetrate. It meant the power carried by the swords was insufficient. As such, I immediately leapt off Paleu’s back, pulling the two swords back.
“Seris!”
I heard Yan’s voice from behind, but there was no time for conversation. I promptly climbed onto the Ice Dragon Sword and grasped the Fire Dragon Sword in my hand.
The Ice Dragon Sword and Fire Dragon Sword, along with the circle in my heart, began to spin rapidly, heating my entire body. At that moment, as massive mana enveloped me, the form of a dragon warrior began to appear.
“Hot winds shall become the path.”
As the mana burned hot and began to emit a red light from the Fire Dragon Sword, I finished the short incantation. The hot wind blew, and small paths formed in the sky.
This magic could not serve as the main course. It focused solely on assisting my movements. As the Ice Dragon Sword that scattered cold chills mounted on the hot winds, it began to shoot off rapidly as if riding on the fierce gales.
At that moment, I locked eyes with the giant snake. It seemed the creature wanted to say something as it opened its mouth, but my Fire Dragon Sword struck the creature’s scales faster.
Kwaduck!
[Crreeeeek!]
As the red light’s blade pierced its body, a tremendous scream erupted from the snake’s mouth. I climbed atop the serpent while gripping my sword, racing upwards. The Fire Dragon Sword lodged in its body emitted even greater heat, igniting a path of flames as I sped down it.
Everything previously neglected and over-reliant on magic came rushing back to me. I remembered that in my first adventure, it was those two clunky swords that had saved my life. The swordsmanship that had painted stars and moons in the fiery heat began to gradually melt away.
Make two into one and one into two. It must naturally divide. Because I had to use both swords simultaneously.
The way to move. The steps of the divine dragon needed to be modified. I began executing everything simultaneously while not halting my sprint. Despite the life-threatening situation, I couldn’t focus on the fight.
A tremendous heat soared into my heated brain. A warm trickle of blood flowed beneath my nose.
[Kiyaaaak!]
The snake’s resistance was fierce. No, “fierce” didn’t even begin to describe it. Whenever it whipped its tail, the ground shook, and when it vibrated the mana to use magic, the very earth in the surrounding areas turned upside down.
“Hiet!”
The Wind God descends. Dozens of members of the Snake Hunter Tribe adorned the wind and began to pierce numerous holes into the massive snake’s body.
Of course, they weren’t unharmed either. Every time the giant tail swept through the group of Snake Hunters, nearly ten fell.
As time passed, and the casualties among the Snake Hunter Tribe increased, the power of their magic diminished. Eventually, the magic itself would disappear.
I charged over the snake’s waist towards its neck. The fiery flames covered its body, but the snake’s movements did not cease.
It was when I reached its neck, climbing up towards its head. A massive swell of mana began to bubble from the body of the snake, forming translucent scales. It was a mana barrier, formed to protect its body using mana.
But it didn’t matter. When the stars and moon, previously melting, fused into one, clarity filled my mind, and a new blade began to form atop the Fire Dragon Sword in my hand.
All the mana within me concentrated in one place.
Whoosh—
When the fiercely burning flames disappeared in an instant, the Fire Dragon Sword was completely covered in a brilliant red hue. That state, which I had incidentally touched upon that day. A feeling that I could cut through anything.
It once again reached my hands.
Swoosh—
The mana of the snake scattered upon touching the red blade. As I pushed the sword deeper, everything around me vanished.
The black ash left behind could not even remain. It felt as though the Fire Dragon Sword was whispering. This is how Kalbain’s Mana is used.
Sliding down from the snake’s head, silent death fell, and the giant serpent’s body was split in two.
