Chapter 131
Having dealt with the Sea God, it wasn’t the end of everything. To completely eradicate the remnants of the Sea God, the Sea God Church needed to be completely uprooted from this Dawn Castle.
This issue was resolved by Runox. He smashed the Sea God Church’s temple and statues while all the followers were away. Then, he dragged the corpses of the transformed Fishman monsters, altered by the Sea God’s power, and displayed them in the plaza of Dawn Castle.
It was quite a shocking act, but its effectiveness was undeniable. As the true nature of the Sea God Church, which had been hidden until now, was revealed to the world, ordinary followers began to abandon the Sea God’s scripture and withdraw from the church. Of course, the fervent believers still turned a blind eye to reality, but the Sea God who would answer their prayers was now gone.
Late in the evening. The streets of Dawn Castle were filled with powerless people trudging about. Their faces were full of emptiness.
“The residents of Dawn Castle seem devoid of energy.”
“Well, it’s only natural since they lost their beloved god overnight… But what can we do?”
“Is Dawn Castle going to be okay now?”
“We must believe it will be. We’ve shown them that the path they were walking was wrong and provided a proper path. This is all we can do for now.”
Suddenly, a strange wind blew. It wasn’t the briny smell of the sea breeze but a warm, comforting gust. As I naturally shifted my gaze with the wind, I noticed a large white wolf sitting atop a grand inn.
The wolf’s transparent gaze swept across the streets of Dawn Castle. Its presence felt distinctly clear this time. At that moment, Runox spoke.
“What do you plan to do now?”
As soon as Runox finished his words, the wolf’s figure dissolved into the wind. After a brief hesitation, I replied.
“What about you, Runox?”
“I’m still thinking of exploring this land more. I haven’t accomplished my mission yet.”
“I see.”
“That said, if you’re okay with it, would you like to accompany me to explore this land…”
“No, I was actually planning to return now.”
I hurriedly interrupted Runox, and he clicked his tongue in disappointment.
“What a pity.”
*
Before the sun would rise, with only the cool moonlight illuminating the path, I slipped out of the inn and mounted Nightmare’s back.
Clop clop—
The sound of Nightmare’s hooves echoed through the streets of Dawn Castle. In the quiet of the night, while walking alone, I discovered several discarded Sea God scriptures scattered across the road.
The scriptures sprawled on the ground were nothing like their formerly neat appearance. Covered in mud and footprints, they seemed to reflect the crumbling influence of the Sea God Church.
Suddenly, I remembered a pair of twin siblings who had also left their hometown to become adventurers. Su and Shu. Kids I could call friends. If I told them about my experiences in the land of Beastmen, Janghon, what kind of reactions would they show?
They would probably tell me not to lie and no one would believe me. They might even chuckle lightly, saying I was sharing a story from a storybook.
The experiences I had in Janghon were mostly absurd.
As I exited Dawn Castle and ascended into a cart, I felt a gaze upon me from above. When I turned my head slightly, a gigantic wolf’s face was looking down at me. It felt like a parting glance. As I raised my hand in response to that gaze, surprise spread across the white wolf’s face.
Was it that surprising to realize its existence?
I lightly smiled while fiddling with the two swords exuding a strange aura.
I began to retrace my path. I felt like eating the enormous bird’s egg and the peach that was guarded by the golden monkey.
If I want to do it, I’ll do it. That’s my belief.
The large peach tree mountain about ten days away from Dawn Castle still had many monkeys. As I pulled on the reins of Nightmare approaching the mountain’s entrance, the monkeys panicked and fled.
Eek-!
Eek-!
Those kids are still noisy. I passed by the peaches scattered around the base of the mountain with indifference and headed towards the top. The path was rugged since it was untouched by people, but it posed no problem for Nightmare.
Thud—
Nightmare, too, seemed to have thought of the large peach that was guarded by the golden monkey, beginning to drool. At the top, a solitary large peach tree stood tall.
Then, I heard a rustling sound from above the large peach tree, and a gigantic golden monkey peered its head out. It looked as if it was cautious of Nightmare.
“Hello.”
If I filled my bag with peaches, I wouldn’t lack anything to munch on while heading to the dock. I drew the Ice Dragon Sword from my waist and hurled it towards the tree.
Swish-!
The swiftly flying Ice Dragon Sword skimmed the peach tree several times. Just after that, before the large peaches hit the ground, the Starlight Mana that escaped from my body gently caught the peaches.
Eek-!
The golden monkey shouted loudly as it beheld the peaches wrapped in starlight. It seemed fascinated by the sight of me picking peaches, jumping around from the tree.
“Thanks again today.”
Eek-!
The monkey, perhaps moved by my gratitude, shook the branch it was perched on vigorously. I smiled lightly and turned my body. That concluded my business here.
Eek-!
As I listened to the monkey’s farewell, I exited the mountain of peaches with Nightmare.
Next, I headed to the high rocky mountain that reminded me of Nightmare’s hometown. The peak was always shrouded in clouds, exuding a mysteriously enchanting atmosphere.
I licked my lips while gazing at the summit. Before arriving at Dawn Castle, I had climbed this mountain to borrow a large bird’s egg for lunch. Even though it was simply roasted, the egg’s flavor was quite good.
Wheeeh-!
Nightmare also seemed to recall the taste of the large bird’s egg and began to lick its lips.
The moment I tugged on the reins, Nightmare climbed the rocky mountain as if it had been waiting for that. When there was no foothold, it created a crystal stone platform in mid-air, allowing it to soar through the sky.
Thus, I arrived at the mountain peak.
Clouds drifted past me. Just then, the owner of the nest, the giant bird, was absent, presumably off hunting. There were two appetizing-looking eggs in the enormous nest. It seemed it had laid two more since I had been there last time.
They looked delicious.
I licked my lips and stuffed the large egg into my bag. The egg, about the size of Nightmare’s head, was quite heavy and sturdy, so I wasn’t worried about it breaking.
After descending from the mountain, I started to construct a makeshift oven out of mud. To cook the egg without burning it and ensuring it was well-cooked inside, the oven had to be tightly enclosed, taking a considerable amount of time.
Regulating the temperature was easy. Just throwing the Fire Dragon Sword into the oven was enough.
As I passed the time eating peaches, before I knew it, the giant bird egg roast was completed.
At first, there was only one, so I shared half with Nightmare, but now I had no need for that. I had obtained two eggs, after all.
I peeled the shell of the egg for Nightmare and also peeled mine to eat.
Cawww-!
While my mouth was stuffed full of egg, I heard a bird’s cry from the mountain. It seemed the one that had gone hunting had returned.
Cawww-!
The massive bird fluttered its wings and circled around the mountain for a while.
*
It was the thirtieth day since I started galloping the road away from Dawn Castle, and I was finally able to enter a city with a dock alongside Nightmare. Although it wasn’t much time, it felt like an eternity since I had returned.
The scenery of the streets here was unchanged. Beastmen, eager for city tours, were attached to the wizards, and whenever there were wizards without such escorts, new Beastmen would stick to them after a step.
And it was the same for me.
“Oh, wizard sir. Is this your first time in this land?”
“That’s unlikely.”
As the Beastmen, acting as guides, saw me fluttering my red robe while proficiently signing, they nodded and quietly stepped back.
Since I had resolved to return, I had no intention of staying here. I led Nightmare straight onto the airship.
If the timing was off, I would have had to stay here for about a week, but fortunately, an airship that was just about to depart was available for immediate boarding. I looked around the ship, but there was no sign of Wendy.
It had been about three hours since I boarded the airship. Once preparations for departure were complete, a massive mana concentration began to gather toward the mana stone engine laid at the bottom of the airship.
Rumble rumble-!
The large body of the airship began to cut through the white clouds and ascend into the sky. I hung onto the huge railing and gazed at the land of Beastmen known as Janghon.
A cool breeze swept through, carrying the white clouds along with it. The appearance of Janghon, the land of Beastmen, quickly vanished into the white clouds.
At that moment, I spotted a wizard leaning against the railing, gazing at the sky, just like I was. There were dreadful dark circles beneath his eyes.
“Hey.”
“Y-yes?”
The woman blinked in surprise as if to confirm if I was indeed calling her. I nodded and asked her.
“Is this airship going anywhere other than Janghon?”
“Well, I don’t think so… at least not that I know of…”
“Oh really?”
“Well, the land of Beastmen has only recently been discovered.”
I nodded at the woman’s answer and looked at the blue sky. There might be an unknown world hidden beyond those white clouds. Lands unknown even to wizards. Places that no one had ever been. I suddenly thought I wanted to embark on an adventure to seek such places.
It was at that moment. A gigantic something revealed itself through the white clouds. The first thing I could recognize was a large eye. Next, a black body gradually became visible, and as its long fins flapped, a colossal wind arose, causing the clouds to surge forth like white waves.
“Whoa…!”
What emerged was a gigantic whale.
The whale, having appeared from the clouds, swished its fin once and then disappeared back into the clouds. The blurred figure didn’t have the green forest that existed in the body of Raben I had seen on Monster Island. It indicated it was a different being.
The entire airship erupted in excitement. The wizards began a heated discussion about the existence of the whale they had just seen. A certain deranged wizard even climbed onto the railing, looking as if he were about to leap from the ship.
I gazed at the white clouds and pulled out a small notebook to jot down a brief record.
Janghon, the land of Beastmen…
