American Tax Officer

Chapter 245: Chapter 171: All Hands on Deck, The Show Begins

```
At this moment in the room, two blonde girls, wearing nothing to cover their bodies, huddled in the corner, while the corpulent Oldington incessantly cursed from the bed.
But as he saw David entering from behind, his brain went completely blank, and the cursing abruptly ceased.
David glanced at the blondes in the corner, then turned to Oldington with a sneer, "Secretary of State Oldington, you certainly know how to have a good time!"
Regaining his composure, Oldington switched to an angry demeanor and rebuked, "David, do you have any idea where you are, and do you realize that this is an invasion of my privacy!"
David turned to Nisen and the others, and said, "Did you hear what the Secretary just said? We are violating his privacy!"
With a mischievous laugh, Nisen instantly pulled out his phone, switched on the camera, and started snapping away at Oldington and the two blondes.
"Fake Yau, what the hell are you doing!"
Oldington panicked and cursed vehemently.
Nisen ignored him, provocatively suggesting while taking pictures, "Secretary, if these were sent to the media, I bet they'd be quite interested!"
"Heh."
With a cold laugh, Oldington shot back sarcastically, "Since when does the IRS start moonlighting as paparazzi?"
"We're certainly not paparazzi, and to be honest, your privacy isn't that interesting to us; we're just here to have a little chat with you, Mr. Secretary!"
"Chat about what?"
David looked to the two blonde girls and said, "You two, out."
The blondes didn't dare protest and immediately gathered their clothes and left.
The FBI agent who had led the way also tactfully exited, closing the door behind him.
It was then that David turned to Oldington and said, "Let's talk about how to get our Governor Stevenson to step down, shall we?"
"What did you say?"
Oldington doubted his ears.
"I said, let's talk about how to make our Governor Stevenson step down."
This time, Oldington knew he hadn't misheard, but the suggestion struck him like a blow to the head.
He knew David could be ruthless.
But he hadn't anticipated that David would be audacious enough to entertain such an idea.
And not just entertain the idea but also dare to come and say it straight to the face of the Secretary of State himself.
It was outrageous!
Putting his thoughts aside, Oldington looked at David as if he were looking at an idiot and said, "Director David, should I say you have guts or you simply have no idea of the consequences?"
"So what do you think of my proposal?"
"Aren't you afraid I will tell Governor Stevenson about your little talk here?"
"You won't."
"Heh..."
Oldington sneered once more, then said, "No, I will definitely tell him, as a price for your rudeness today!"
Without another word, David raised his hand, and Simmons promptly pulled a folded file folder from the inside pocket of his suit and handed it to David.
After taking it, David tossed it in front of Oldington.
Oldington glanced at it, then looked up and asked, "What's this?"
"Why don't you open it and find out?"
Oldington frowned, picked up the file folder, ripped it open, and started examining the contents.
However, as the details became clear to him, his complexion drastically changed. After reading the last page, he slammed the papers down on the ground.
He then looked up at David with a glare and demanded, "Where did you get these from?"
"I don't think I need to explain that to you!"
"What do you want?"
"I already told you earlier, do I need to repeat myself?"
Oldington fell silent, his expression constantly shifting.
The documents contained detailed information about every bribe he had taken since the Black Tax Act came into effect over two months ago.
It also included details of who was involved, which projects, final accounts where his laundered funds ended up, and some of his transactions with unexplained sources of funds.
Beyond that, there were numerous depositions from those implicated.
It could be said that if this information were to be made public, not only would his career as Secretary of State be over, but his reputation would be destroyed, and he might even end up in prison for tax evasion!
But to stand against Governor Stevenson...
That was tantamount to a death wish, so he really was caught between a rock and a hard place.
"Mr. Secretary, my time is precious; don't waste it!"
Oldington gritted his teeth and said, "I'm just a Secretary of State, how could I possibly have the power to topple Governor Stevenson..."
"I don't plan on having you confront him all by yourself."
Oldington was taken aback and quickly asked, "You mean to say there are others involved?"
```

"You don't need to ask so many questions right now, you just need to give me an answer!"

Oldington looked unsettled.

He thought that if David could fabricate such detailed evidence against him, it was very likely he could do the same to others.

Perhaps, within the current state government, many had already been ensnared.

If that were the case, then indeed there was some confidence in toppling Governor Stevenson.

With this thought, he replied, "If it's within my power, then I can do it for you, but if it's not, there's nothing I can do."

Although he had a very good relationship with Stevenson, who had also shown him great favor,

there's an old saying: even birds of the same forest fly separately when disaster strikes.

And now, having his Achilles' heel firmly gripped by David—an individual known for ruthless methods—how could he dare to resist any further?

At this moment, all he could think about was saving his own skin first!

"You will be informed when the time comes!"

Leaving these words behind, David turned and walked away.

As soon as David and his people had left, Oldington immediately picked up his cell phone and dialed Gavin's number.

"Mr. Secretary of State, what's the matter?"

"Gavin, what kind of job is your FBI doing, how can...how can..."

Oldington was aware of Gavin's dealings with Stevenson and knew that since David's arrival in Carson City, Gavin's FBI had been monitoring David.

He originally wanted to reprimand Gavin, questioning how his surveillance of David could be so lax that he was unaware even when David was investigating him.

But as he was about to speak, he suddenly realized that he couldn't directly tell Gavin that his own vulnerability had been exposed, could he?

"What seems to be the issue with our FBI, Mr. Secretary of State?"

After a moment of contemplation, Oldington had a stroke of inspiration and said, "It seems David is investigating me. Have you any knowledge of this?"

In the FBI Office, Gavin showed a trace of concern upon hearing this, and after a short pause, replied, "I'm sorry, Mr. Secretary of State, we're not quite clear on this."

"Can't your FBI be a little more responsible? Never mind, let it be!"

Hearing the beep of the disconnected call, Gavin too set down the phone, deep in thought about something.

Standing nearby, Eugene asked cautiously, "What's wrong, Mr. Gavin?"

"Judging by Oldington's tone, it seems... he, too, has fallen into David's hands."

"What!"

Eugene was somewhat incredulous upon hearing this.

That was the dignified Secretary of State, after all!

But soon his shock faded to composure.

They were the FBI, and yet they were also being manipulated by David; what then was the Secretary of State?

"David, the IRS, Senator candidate Lawson Rubins, Deputy Governor Laurie, and now Secretary of State Oldington... things are getting interesting..."

While Gavin did not dare to keep David under surveillance, the information he gathered from various sources indicated that David and his group had been approaching these individuals.

If they reached an agreement with him against Governor Stevenson, then this time, Stevenson might not be killed, but he'd likely be skinned!

At the Governor's Mansion.

"No news yet?"

In the living room, Governor Stevenson asked Eugene as he entered.

"None."

"What on earth is he up to!"

Stevenson was getting increasingly agitated.

Yesterday, upon hearing David had gone to seek out Lawson Rubins, he was quite pleased, thinking the kid would yield to his power and, according to his instructions, go after that candidate.

But as he eagerly awaited a scandal from the IRS about Lawson Rubins, he ended up waiting until today with still no word.

"Governor, I have a bad feeling about this. David has been in Carson City for several days now and hasn't made a move, and the FBI seem equally inert, not bringing us any useful information for the past few days. I have reason to suspect that the two may have joined forces," Eugene posited.

Eugene did, indeed, have some instincts for danger.

The clash between the FBI and the IRS a few days ago had gradually subsided, which was in itself provocative.

Despite assurances from Gavin, over the phone and in person, that everything was fine,

and that the IRS had had to release Lawson Rubins due to a lack of solid evidence,

it had been silence from the FBI since then—he found that suspicious.

Now with David approaching Lawson Rubins and still no further developments after almost two days,

combining all these factors made things very questionable!

After Eugene's comments, Governor Stevenson also began to calm down and after some thought, he said, "The IRS working with the FBI? That seems unlikely. I know Gavin; he's a man who wouldn't lift a finger without profit. He agreed to act only after I promised him help in returning to Washington D.C. post-success. What benefit could there be for him to help the IRS against me now?"

"There's no benefit, but what if David... has something on him?"

Eugene's bold guess alarmed Stevenson, who quickly objected, "That's impossible. David has some skills, but Gavin, as the head of the Nevada FBI, isn't just idling about. How could he let David gain such leverage to command him?"
