America 1881: Legend of the West

Chapter 72 The Phelps Family

"Mr. Sheriff, I am Hanif, the bounty hunter. To make a long story short, there is a criminal gang operating around here, and their total bounty is thousands of dollars!" Hanif said eagerly.

"Oh, that's your business. Isn't that what bounty hunters do?" Danny turned around and walked towards his horse.

"We have captured a very important person among them!" Hanif followed and pointed at Holmes.

"Just him?" Danny glanced at the geologist who looked like an old man who could be knocked down by a gust of wind. "Congratulations, you should now hand him over to the police station that issued the bounty."

"But this gang is very dangerous, and they will come to save this person." Hanif said seriously, spitting like flying stars, and couldn't help waving his hands, "I think we can set up an ambush and catch them all. "

He paused: "We can split the bounty equally."

"If they don't commit crimes in my jurisdiction, I have no obligation to provoke them. Again, you should go to the police station that issued the bounty for help." Chief Danny had already mounted his horse, "I'm sorry, sir. I have to go home and taste the pies my wife made, and I’m almost five minutes late. Is there anything else you can help me with?”

Hanif stood frozen in place, unaware that Donnie was tugging on his sleeve.

He didn't expect that Pitkin's police sergeant would be so "businesslike". What was even more strange was that he didn't even see any other police officers around him.

Downey was helpless. He came to the side of the Sheriff's horse and whispered to the Sheriff: "Sir, Sheriff, can you lend us some money? We don't have a penny on us. A place to eat and stay tonight." None. We will return the bounty to you as soon as we receive it."

Sheriff Danny frowned, took out a twenty-five-cent coin from his pocket, and threw it to them:

"I didn't bring much with me when I went out. You can figure out the rest by yourself."

Hanif was still immersed in the failure of his plan and his grief and anger at the inaction of the police in the west, but Downey quickly picked up the coin from the ground.

Twenty-five cents was obviously not enough for three people to stay in a hotel and have dinner.

However, they stayed at a county hotel because Holmes was afraid that two hungry bounty hunters would skin him alive.

"I still have some money in my pocket. I don't take much with me when I go out. I originally planned to go to the market to buy some things." Holmes said.

"When we get your bounty, we will definitely return it to you." Downey nodded firmly.

Sheriff Danny rode his horse and wandered leisurely through the streets of Pitkin County, greeting the familiar residents on both sides of the street:

"Hey Nancy, you look so beautiful today, and that dress looks great!"

"Peter, go home quickly and stop hanging around here, or your wife will be angry again!"

"Little John, where is your father? Hey, hey! Stop chasing that dog, or your father will spank you."

……

The residents saluted the Sheriff with respect, even though he had just been elected Sheriff.

The sergeant is not a local, but has moved here for about ten years. He is willing to help others and is approachable.

Danny enjoyed this feeling very much. He was nearly fifty years old and he was very attached to this peaceful life.

There is a delicate balance in this county.

The southern periphery of the county is the territory of German Clark Luckfield, whose main business is the black market and livestock trading; while the county and the northern part is the sphere of influence of the Phelps family, which is mainly engaged in timber and mineral trading.

The Germans came to this area a few years ago, and the Phelps family was a native of this area. The two sides fought a fight, but found that neither could do anything to the other, so they chose a truce.

Things have been quiet in Pitkin County since then.

Danny didn't want to be the Sheriff, but he was eventually elected. In fact, he himself also knew what role this police chief was.

Since he took office, he has maintained the habit of getting off work on time, and his police officers get off work earlier than him.

Now all he can think about is the taste of the raspberry pie his wife baked. If it is added with honey sauce, it will be perfect.

Danny's home is an independent house at the end of the street, outside the town. There is a fence around the house, and there are a few poultry, cattle and sheep inside.

He has lived here ever since he came to this county, and this was once his principal business, and is now his side business.

Danny led the horse into the stable, then went to the back of the stable to pick up a pile of fodder and put it in the horse's trough. After doing this, he washed his face in the sink at the door.

"Teresa, I'm back." He called his wife's name as he wiped his face with a piece of cloth.

No one answered.

His wife never goes far away, let alone ignores him.

Danny straightened up, and a burning smell came from the room and entered his nose.

"Oops!"

Danny hurriedly drew his Winchester lever rifle from his horse and rushed to his house.

He kicked the door open.

The burnt smell became even greater. He held the gun and moved towards the restaurant step by step. When he was only two steps away from the restaurant, he dodged and rushed in, raised the gun and searched quickly.

Bottom left corner, no one! Bottom right corner, no one! There is no one at the cupboard!

The frying pan on the stove has been burned out of shape, and there is a black mass like coke on it. The burnt smell comes from here.

Danny quickly put down his gun, took a ladle of water from the bucket in the corner and poured it on the pot.

The fire in the fireplace was put out, and a thick plume of steam and smoke rose in the kitchen, making a "sizzling" sound that made Danny cough.

He opened the dining room window.

Teresa would never do such a thing. Even if she was chased around twenty years ago, she would never drop what she was doing and leave.

There is only one possibility, she was kidnapped.

Thinking of this, Danny opened the drawer in his bedroom, took out some ammunition, and took it with him.

He got on his horse and knocked on the door of his police officer's house from room to room.

Ten minutes later, he appeared at the gate of the Phelps family home with four or five police officers armed with guns.

The Phelps family's house is also outside the town. It is a tall three-story building surrounded by a high wall.

Behind the building is the family farm, which can be seen as far as the eye can see.

This is an estate.

At the gate of the house, there were three or four men with guns. When they saw Sheriff Danny and his men, they had no intention of letting them go.

"What do you do for a living?" a man with a gun asked the police sergeant outside the door.

"I'm looking for Fred Phelps," Danny said calmly.

The man motioned for him to wait here and walked into the door of the house.

After a while, the man came out and waved to the other two people at the door.

"Chief Danny please come in and the others stay outside."

Danny handed the gun to the police officer behind him and stepped into the tall door of Phelps' house.

A man was leaning on the sofa in the hall, holding a cigar in his mouth, and his eyes stopped on an exquisite snuff bottle on the table.

Didn't even look at him.

He is the head of the Phelps family, the legendary real County Sheriff of Pitkin County - Fred Phelps
