Chapter 9
Not long after Wan Zhong felt low, he quickly adjusted his mood and encouraged himself to cheer up again.
No matter what kind of adversity and despair he was in, if he could live, he didn’t want to die.
Wan Zhong put away those messy thoughts behind for the time being. The top priority was to get better first.
The three-legged monster with a body like a calf and a long neck laid on the ground, its body stiff.
Wan Zhong thought it was dead at first, but after observing for a while, he found out it was just fainted.
He saw its feathers were colorful and beautiful. It not only had a crown on its head, but also had a hard and protruding beak. The footprints on the ground made by its sharp claws were also in the shape of bamboo leaves, and it also had two large wings. The characteristics were very similar to chickens, so he named it three-legged chicken.
Wan Zhong found a vine and tied the three-legged chicken. Because the black snake was unwilling to carry it or hang it on its tail, Wan Zhong could only wrap the vine around his hand and drag the three-legged chicken on the ground.
But because the black snake was too fast and the three-legged chicken was too heavy, Wan Zhong was sweating all the way, the vines broke several times on the way back, and Wan Zhong’s palms were torn. He was almost passed out along the way.
After the vines broke again, Wan Zhong had to look for new vines, but the three-legged chicken suddenly opened its eyes, broke away from the broken vines and ran away.
“No! It was pretending to be dead just now!”
Wan Zhong yelled anxiously, and hurriedly chased after it with the fruits in his arms. But his feet got weak and his legs tripped by a tree root. He was about to fall down, luckily by the black snake was there and he landed firmly on the ground with its tail curled up around him.
“Hurry! Catch it!”
Wan Zhong hurriedly pushed the black snake’s tail to urge it, but the black snake just lowered its head and licked the wound on his palm carefully with the snake tongue. Just when Wan Zhong thought the meat in his mouth was about to fly away, the black snake that had taken care of his wound swept its tail and stopped the three-legged chicken’s escape.
.
Wan Zhong wiped the sweat from his head, held his stomach and gasped: “Quick, kill it quickly~”
Unexpectedly, the black snake just spat out the snake tongue and did not follow his words.
Wan Zhong thought it didn’t understand, so he made a gesture of wiping his neck and said again: “Kill it, kill it.”
As he said this, he turned his back and covered his ears with his hands.
Time passed minute by minute.
The black snake laid quietly on the three-legged chicken, showing no intention of taking action.
Wan Zhong saw that the black snake was unwilling to help him, so he could only take off his shirt and pack the black dates.
After resting against the tree trunk for a long time, he gritted his teeth and stretched out a section of the vine to do it himself.
The three-legged chicken was shaking like chaff.
Wan Zhong trembled even more.
He had never killed a fish in his entire life. When he was a child, when pigs and sheep were being killed at home or next door, he would cover his ears and stay away.
Although he didn’t hesitate when it came to eating those poultry, there was still a difference between eating and killing.
But now the situation was like this.
He had no choice but to bite the bullet.
When the three-legged chicken struggled had become limp in his arms, Wan Zhong felt that his whole body was shaking.
He couldn’t explain what it felt like. He just fell down on the black snake’s tail and said to himself: ‘Very good, you did it.’
.
The sky was slightly bright.
A little bit of morning light fell through the canopy of trees that blocked the sky, telling Wan Zhong, he had lived another day.
Wan Zhong sat weakly by the tree to rest. Even if there was a black snake on his back, he didn’t want to take another step.
He vaguely heard the sound of the stream, and after a few good-tempered discussions with the black snake, he gritted his teeth and dragged the three-legged chicken that was as big as a calf over…
Wan Zhong checked the water quality first to see if it was still running water. He washed his face, ate a few black dates to replenish his strength, and then started to pack the chicken.
He didn’t have any handy tools, and he wasn’t very skilled. Fortunately, the claws of the three-legged chicken were like iron hooks, very hard and sharp.
It took a long time for Wan Zhong to smash its claws with a stone. He scratched its belly with the tip of the claws, breaking its belly very easily.
The gushing blood covered the internal organs flowed stickily from his fingertips, and the hot blood splashed all over his head and body. A few drops fell on the end of his eyes along his long and thick eyelashes, making his gorgeous face look bloody and chilling.
Wan Zhong felt that his hands were shaking and his stomach was very uncomfortable, but he did not avoid it, nor did he hesitate at all. He clumsily and quickly took out the internal organs of the three-legged chicken, letting the cold-water flow along his fingers. The water washed the blood, taking away a steady stream of bloody dark red.
He closed his mouth tightly and forced himself to get used to the bloody smell. He kept saying to himself over and over again: ‘You must adapt quickly so you can survive.’
The psychological suggestion of a strong desire to survive gave Wan Zhong spiritual support, which made him work powerfully.
Wan Zhong was concerned the smell of blood might attract other beasts, so he forced himself to move as quickly as possible, pushing for even greater speed.
While there was no immediate safety concern with the presence of the black snake, he believed it was better to be safe than sorry.
He feared that the scent of blood might excite the black snake, prompting it to hastily consume him.
With weak hands and feet, Wan Zhong packed up the three-legged chicken, occasionally glancing at the surrounding environment and the black snake on the tree. Relief washed over him as the blood and innards were washed away, and he cleaned his face and body with water.
.
After eating a few black dates for a brief rest, he attempted to cut the three-legged chicken meat using his sharp claws.
Despite fatigue, Wan Zhong felt invigorated by his desire for meat, finding the sharp claws surprisingly effective. He quickly cut several pieces, discovering the skin could be peeled off intact, providing both toughness and the retention of feathers for a makeshift blanket.
Wan Zhong washed the skin, shook off water drops, and spread it on the ground for a more comfortable rest.
As he attended to these tasks, the black snake’s tail coiled behind him, marking its territorial boundary. Wan Zhong couldn’t decipher if the snake was protecting him or preventing escape, yet in a forest teeming with wild beasts, the black snake offered not only fear but also a comforting sense of security.
Contemplating this, Wan Zhong gazed at the black snake on the tree, twisting its snake body happily, and found himself startled by the notion of feeling safe.
