Adventures of an Ancient Space Battleship

Interlude Fallout

The young woman watched the captain running around like a bird with its head cut off. An image that reminded her of that one weird place she had visited years ago. On that world, people could actually survive having their heads cut off. How and why, she didn’t know, they didn’t let her investigate.

As she thought about that an engineer rushed onto the bridge, report in hand, and seemingly out of breath. They came up to the captain panting, “Repair estimate sir. Whatever they hit us with. It hit us real bad. With the exception of the hyperdrive, life support, and the main sublight engines, everything has been damaged or destroyed. Multiple hull breaches, it’s a miracle we didn’t lose anyone.”

Someone else commented, “What did they hit us with anyway?”

The woman sighed, she knew, but it was kinda why she was here. Her speciality was ancient ruins and long gone civilizations. “Those were ancient Drone weapons. Until today I thought only a Guardian would carry them.”

The captain rounded on her, “What do you know about them?”

“Guardians are ancient automated warships found orbiting long abandoned shield worlds left behind by the Ancient civilizations. They are only a bit larger than the average cruiser but they pack a hell of a punch. Expeditions to study the ancient races have to be carefully planned around these ships. They are fleet killers. Entire battle fleets have challenged those warships and failed, but luckily they are not known to stray beyond their posts.”

“And these drones? How do we defend against them?”

“We don’t, they can punch through all known forms of armor, energy shielding doesn’t even slow them down and they are just as invulnerable to weapons fire as the ships that fire them.”

Someone else then asked the question she had about all this, “What is bugging me is where those shots came from, and who fired them?”

She shrugged, “Either someone has gained access to ancient technology, or we were attacked by an ancient.”

“I’m not sure I like either option.”

“Nor I,” said a second, “and that still leaves us with a question: why shoot us?”

No one had any idea about that. She started thinking about what she knew regarding the ancient civilizations. They had left behind many ruins, the shield worlds, the guardians and they had been around when the elder civilizations were young. There was no record of them going extinct, rather they had vanished mysteriously many hundreds of thousands of years ago. Following a great war who’s effects could still be found in the archaeological record. Entire worlds bore the scars of that war.

Regardless they were going to have plenty of time to form theories while they limped back home in a badly damaged ship. The conversation finished, the captain turned back to getting the ship home. There were more important things to do than speculate further. Standing up, she started thinking about what she could do to help.

Kohli let out a breath, her date had gone mostly to plan. Still she had to wonder why D’rik kept bringing up that he was leaving? They could have had a little more fun if he hadn’t and maybe she could have handled the whole dumping part better. Her mind flashed to that face he had given her and for a moment she was tempted to run after, but instead she didn’t.

Throwing herself on the couch, she slumped into it. Not sure what to do for a bit, then her gaze fell on her comm terminal. Maybe she should call Kophi? It was often fun talking with that nudist friend of hers. Sometimes just being naked had its appeal, but she wasn’t sure about her friend’s inclination. Being with another girl could be fun every once in a while, but to give up boys entirely? She wasn’t sure about that one.

Looking away from her comm, she considered the idea of calling her. She was a good friend, but then she realized what she really wanted. Pulling herself off the sofa, she grabbed a couple of things and headed for the door. She was going to surprise her friend.

The two were both tower staff, so they had been provided homes on the premises. A small block of nice houses had been constructed for them in a small neighborhood which was an easy walk from the tower. New colonies rarely had the infrastructure for a decent public transportation network and without vehicles, they were difficult to maintain until a colony got off the ground. So everything was built with walking in mind, but they did build with vehicles in mind. People were going to want their air shuttles and ground cars, even if it was currently logistical impossible to properly support them. That would change once they started producing more things locally or once a proper spaceport and logistical train was established. Of course if her home colony was any indication it would be both and her friend’s former home had the same story.

Thanks to the short walking distance it wasn’t long before she reached Kophi’s door. Fingering the door panel, she set off the chime that would alert Kophi that she had a visitor. After a moment or two the door opened and she caught sight of the familiar naked form of the larger girl, her fluffy tails swaying gently behind her.

“Um, did I come at a bad time?” she said, her gaze having dropped to the other girl’s pussy.

Kophi giggled and then pulled her into a hug, closing the door behind her, “Nah, I always have time for you.”

She relaxed into the hug feeling a little uncertain. Idly she realized how unbothered she was by this when in the past she would have been very much aware of how naked her friend was right now. When Kophi started stroking her back,  Kohli began to nuzzle her chest and relaxed further, “You dumped him didn’t you.”

She nodded into her friend, who simply comforted her and listened as she relayed what happened. There was no ‘I told you that was stupid’ or anything like that. Just a comforting presence and a reassuring stroke of her back.

Finally after a bit, her friend asked her, “Want me to help you take your mind off it?”

She nodded and was soon dragged bodily into another room. She blinked when she saw the bathroom. Why was she in here? Her thoughts awhirl, she was caught off guard when Kophi suddenly pulled her panties down. “What!? What are...”

She gasped and mumbled the rest out as her dress was pulled over her head and in a smooth manner her bra was unhooked just as quickly while she was still off balance leaving her naked in Kophi’s bathroom. “What? You don’t expect a proper luxury bath while dressed, do you?”

Kophi started drawing water in the large tub she had. It was bigger than the one Kohli had. Perhaps she had brought it with her? There was some room for personalization. Then a bunch of creams came out, along with brushes, shampoos and soaps. Kohli gulped as a shudder went down her spine. She suddenly felt like a very small animal in front of a hunter.
