A Demon's Tale

Chapter 36: Formed Trust

Through a dark hallway, sounds of wood stepping down onto the floor below echoed along the walls. To many, this would be a sound that would leave them focused on what may appear. However, with this hallway in particular, the sounds had only made the guards run in fear. They were already aware of what was approaching.

Though they had not felt the force of what would soon arrive, they did wish to feel it in the slightest. The view they had received earlier was more than enough for an understanding. Thus, they chose to save their own lives, and scurry away from the mighty foe.

There was one other thing they had known however. That absurd monster that would soon arrive was no longer alone. They had another ally with them. An ally who was once an ally to the guards themselves.

This would be a battle they would have no chance of winning. To fight back against them would be suicide.

The vacant hallway was now only occupied by two individuals. The monster that the guards had feared so much, and a muscular girl resting in the monster’s arms.

Kōkatsu: [Hmmm. What outfit to make for ya…This is a real toughie to think of. Obviously it should fit the Kōkatsu Family style, or should it? Ya got the perfect appearance for somethin’ a lot more beastly. Plus, would a kimono really fit ya? We could do somethin’ with fur, which would give a lot more of a kitsune type of impression to people…]

As Kōkatsu spoke to the girl that she held, a spark had formed within the tall child’s head.

Kiyomi: [Ah! What about a fur kimono?]

Kōkatsu: [Oooooooooo! Now that, I like! A big fur pelt on top, and a kimono beneath all of it. Oh! We could also have fur on the folds too. Maybe just have the whole thing be fur. Nah, that might be too much. I think I’ll stick to just the fur on top.]

Within her brain, Kōkatsu began to craft different types of outfit ideas for Kiyomi.

Kiyomi had only worn her tattered pieces of cloth for several years. To her, receiving such a gift from Kōkatsu would be a change in her life that she had never expected.

She had waited for a day like this to arrive, but she was unsure if it truly would.

Kōkatsu: [Speakin’ of the family stuff, we need a title for ya. I’m not gonna do it for every single child, and I don’t like pickin’ favorites, I really don’t. Buuuuuuuut, since ya got some crazy strength and ya just so happen to be the second child, we gotta give ya one.]

Kiyomi: [A title?]

Kōkatsu: [Yeah. I’m Mother of All, then we got my precious little Kaoru with hers, The First Child, so now we need one for ya. I did some brainstormin’ on the way here though, and thought of a good one. At least I think ‘s good anyways. “Strong Second”. ‘S a title that fits given that yer the second child, ya got the muscles of someone real strong, and ya got two little tails on yer bum.]

Kiyomi: [Strong Second…I like it!]

Kōkatsu: [Yahahaha! Then ‘s decided! From this day onward, yer Strong Second, Kiyomi! I think that has a nice ring to–hngk!]

Kiyomi: [Lady Kōkatsu?!]

Though she was energetic seconds prior, the emotion on Kōkatsu’s face faded as a pained expression washed over it. Her body forced itself down, kneeling with one leg flat on the floor. Kiyomi quickly moved out from Kōkatsu’s arms and knelt down herself, as she wanted to check Kōkatsu’s condition.

After moving, Kiyomi noticed Kōkatsu moving one of her hands over to her stomach. She tightly gripped her kimono as heavy pants were released from her mouth.

Kōkatsu: [Fuck…Not now…Just a little bit further…]

Kiyomi: [Lady Kōkatsu! Please! What happe–]

It had fully struck her then, or rather, she had struck Kōkatsu earlier. That had been the very cause of this injury. Her left arm seemed slightly weaker, her face had a small bruise to it, but none of those injuries would have affected someone this strong. There was one other attack however, an attack that Kōkatsu had faced head on without moving. An attack that was aimed directly at her stomach.

Kiyomi: [This…This is all–]

Kōkatsu: [Kiyomi…My foolish little girl…Don’t go assumin’ it’s yer fault…]

Kiyomi: [But…I–]

Kōkatsu: [From the beginnin’, I should have figured out how yer ability worked…On top of that, I should have just helped ya from the get go…I wasted my time when I shouldn’t have, especially with what we’re doin’...The hell was I thinkin’...How the hell am I gonna help Shiro like this…]

Kiyomi: [Please wait, Lady Kōkatsu! I’m sure…I’m sure we can find something to help! I’m…not very good at healing myself, but I swear! I’ll help you! You said I’m your daughter right? That means I have to help you too!]

Kōkatsu: [...Kaoru…]

Kiyomi: [Huh?]

Kōkatsu: [...There’s a little kitsune girl up ahead…She’s ‘bout two or three feet shorter than ya…She has orange hair, kinda looks like a smaller, more kind version of me…She can heal me…]

A command was not given to Kiyomi, but from Kōkatsu’s words alone she knew what to do next. Much like her new mother had done for her moments before, she moved one of Kōkatsu’s arms over her head and picked her up.

Kiyomi: [I promise I’ll find her! Just hang on, Lady Kōkatsu!]

Kōkatsu: [Heh…I know ya will…I believe in ya…]

As her consciousness faded, Kiyomi quickly ran forward while carefully making sure not to injure Kōkatsu any further. She wanted to feel responsible for what had happened, but the woman in her arms had prevented her from doing so. Her focus was now clear. She could not dwell on her actions any longer. She would find the girl named Kaoru at any cost.

The sound of bare feet slapping the floor replaced the once wooden sound, growing more distant as time went on.

During the same moment as the battle outside, a group of five continued to run forward within the castle. Their goal was simple: they would take down Daroma the Dark. His current position was detected via matōki sensing at the other side of where they had been. The only objective now was to reach that area.

As per their agreement before arriving here, the group had decided to split their forces should dangerous foes appear before them. Eventually reaching the point where there would only be two left. The hope in this plan being that by the point they’d reach Daroma, the two who would remain would not have to deal with any further opponents.

They continued to move as they spoke.

Yoro: [By the way, I hope it’s okay for me to ask but, what were you two talking about earlier?]

Shiro: [Huh? Oh, well, I was trying to figure out what to do with my matōki attacks and Nero helped me figure something out.]

Yoro: [You did, Nene?! You really are wonderful!♥]

Nero: [It was mainly a simple idea of using matōki and an element at the same time. Seeing as Shiro’s element is focused on a much more explosive style of an attack, I felt that the mix of the two would likely generate a much greater effect.]

Yoro: [Oh! I see! That is very smart indeed! I agree with Nene, Shiro! Using the two together might be best for you! Plus, you’re super fast, so that should work to your advantage as well.]

Shiro: [Hm. Maybe I should test some stuff out against Daroma then. Wait, hey guys, we’ve got enemies!]

Their running was then put to a halt as Shiro noticed two enemies approaching the group. They remained cautious of any surprise attacks as the pair moved forward.

???: [Well, well! Looky here! Seems like Kiyomi couldn’t get the job done, right Toad?]

Toad: [It’s as you say, Frog. Though this is to be expected of a lowlife such as her. Honestly, if she ended up dead, would any of us really care all that much?]

Frog: [Hah! The only purpose she serves is being a guard dog. Other than that, she can just lie down and spill her guts for all I care.]

Two men had appeared, both with appearances that had given off a laid back presence. They both had short hair with baggy clothing with sneakers resting on their feet. As the two mocked their comrade, Yoro stepped forward past the group.

Yoro: [I’ll take these guys. They’re starting to annoy me. All of you can keep moving forward.]

Shiro: [You’re sure. Yoro?]

Yoro: [I don’t care what they can do, I’m probably more skilled than them. If need be, I can take them out real quick.]

Shiro accepted Yoro’s words and prepared herself to move once more. She looked back to Nero, who gave an odd hand signal to her. Silvia and Kaoru had not understood it, but to someone like Shiro, who had learned such things from her mother, she was able to comprehend what he had said. She gave a small giggle before smiling back at him, and running forward towards the next doorway with the others.

Frog: [Hey now, did we say you can–]

The man was then interrupted by a wall of frosting that had appeared in front of him, preventing any attacks towards the group.

Yoro: [You’re facing me. You’d do well to remember that.]

Yoro looked back towards her friends who had moved forward. She wished them the best of luck within her own head. There was something that felt off however. Seeing the three of them moving, she was not entirely sure what was wrong.

The three of–

Toad: [Honestly, do you think something like that is all it takes? You’re facing two people, you kno–]

Before the other man could finish his statement, a wall of ice was built in an instant. Separating both foes from the group that had been in the middle.

???: [You are indeed correct. We are facing two people. I believe this is evenly matched.]

Yoro turned around with her eyes glimmering in shock. She had finally realized what was missing. Why it had taken this long was something that she subconsciously beat herself up over within her head.

Yoro: [Nene!]

Nero: [If it’s alright, I think it would be best to not risk any possible damage towards you, Yoyo. Therefore, I have decided to stay in order to help.]

Her eyes continued to shine as he spoke with her. The flame of her love that rested in her heart only burned brighter.

Yoro: [You stayed…for me?]

Nero: [Of course. I would be doing a rather bad job of being a boyfriend if I did not assist the one I love with her needs, would I not?]

Yoro rolled her fingers around each other while looking away from Nero. His words were correct, but she did not wish to judge him in any harsh manner.

Yoro: [I mean…I don’t think it would be that bad. I’d still love you so I think that’s what really matters…]

As she made circles that looped over each other with her fingers, Yoro jumped up with an idea ratting in her mind.

Yoro: [Nene! I have an idea! It…requires a few things, but there’s one main thing it requires!]

Nero: [Can I request that it does not involve killing in any way?]

Yoro: [Hehe! Don’t worry, I’ve gotten used to your preferences! There will be no killing at all!]

As they spoke, the two that stood beyond them began to grow annoyed.

Frog: [Do they really think we’re just here to fuck around or something?]

Toad: [Let us be the ones to start then.]

Moving their hands upward, the men prepared to fire a quick matōki blast at the couple. Nero and Yoro took notice of this, and jumped backwards out of the way. They prepared themselves for what could possibly come next, while continuing to speak.

Nero: [Very well.]

Yoro: [Hm?]

Nero: [Please name what it requires.]

Yoro: [Oh! Right! All I need is one thing…]

Despite her focus being towards her enemies, Yoro began to turn her head towards Nero.

Yoro: [...Do you trust me?]

Nero looked back towards her. The requirement she had spoken was odd, but it had also felt like a pointless question to him. After all, he already knew the answer for quite some time now.

Nero: [Of course.]

His smile was like a beam shooting at Yoro’s heart, only causing her to smile back in turn. Full of energy, Yoro built up her matōki around her.

Yoro: [Alright then! Here we go!]

Another blast was shot towards them, but was instantly negated by a swipe from Nero’s hand. A much larger wave of matōki was sent towards the two men, only stopping short before it could reach them.

Frog: [Damn! That guy is good! Oi, Toad! You might wanna use your little trick on him!]

Toad: [Fine.]

An odd slime-like aura built up around the man as he prepared to use something. Nero remained on guard for what would happen, as his clairvoyance could not even provide a clear answer. Suddenly, from the man’s hand came a matōki wave that looked like branches of a tree spreading across the room and towards Nero. The branches were then broken entirely when they had made contact with Nero.

Toad: [W-What?!]

Frog: [Hey, it broke?! That’s never happened, has it?!]

Toad: [No…It hasn’t. They were not underestimating us, we were underestimating them.]

Frog: [Keh! Shit!]

Frog then charged multiple small matōki blasts aimed towards Yoro. As Yoro looked towards them, she quickly called out to the man providing aid to her.

Yoro: [Nene! I’m sorry to ask, but–]

Nero: [There is no need to feel sorry or to ask, I know what must be done.]

Before the attacks could reach, Nero had shot another wave of matōki towards the blasts. The impact overpowering them and causing them to fade like dust in the wind.

As this occurred, what formed on Frog’s face was not that of a dissatisfied anger, but instead a smile.

Frog: [I get it. I think I see the bigger picture now...Hey, Toad.]

Toad: [Yes. I know what you will say. It seems like we can take advantage of this.]

The duo then focused their attention on Nero, firing rapid blasts at him in quick succession. What was once a visible image of Nero had only become a dust cloud due to their attacks.

Yoro stood there in confusion. She did not know why they had chosen to perform an action like this, nor why they would expect for something like this to work against Nero after what had occurred before.

Yoro: [Do they think if he can’t see me then an easy chance for an attack will arrive? No…These guys are assholes, but they don’t seem stupid. Their first instinct wasn’t to play around, but use their unknown ability as quickly as possible. On top of that, when they noticed the situation involving Nero, they chose to attack me instead. What’s the endgame here then?]

Frog: [Come on! Come on! Is that all you’ve got?! You’re just gonna stand there and take it?!]

Toad: [A rather pitiful display, I must say.]

Nero: [Whether the display of my actions are miserable or courageous does not matter to me at this moment. I will continue to prevent your attacks from moving forward no matter how long it takes.]

In response to the still alive voice that came from the smoke, Frog shouted back to it in an exaggerated shock.

Frog: [What?! You’re still alive?! How the hell is that possible?!]

Toad: [This is certainly not what we were expecting.]

Despite their words, the firing of their blasts did not cease. It continued to fill the area surrounding Nero in a pool of smoke. Yoro had once again taken notice of what was going on.

Yoro: [And now with the bad acting? They’re saying all of that, but they haven’t even stopped their pointless attacks. Wait, is Nero’s matōki running out quicker than their’s by any chance?! No, it wouldn’t…right? Shit! I don’t know enough about that part of him! When we fought, I made him get rid of it entirely!]

Yoro quickly turned to face Nero again, panicking over his well being.

Yoro: [Nene! Be careful! I think they–]

As she turned to face him, a smile had once again broken out onto Frog’s face. Only this time, it had curved towards his cheeks even further than before.

Toad: [Frog–]

Frog: [Yeah, yeah. I’m on it.]

Much like Toad’s tree shaped matōki technique from before, a wave of matōki resembling that of clouds were shot towards Yoro, hitting her directly. Her face became stunned as the impact was received. Nero had noticed the attack hitting her, and quickly turned to check on her.

Nero: [Yoro!]

Frog: [Hey, Toad–]

Toad: [If you already know, then why would I not be aware?]

The tree was once again spread out, finally making contact with Nero’s body. He shifted in position from the force, but nothing was felt as it entered him. It seemed odd to him that Yoro’s caused a change in her face compared to the one he received, but this was not the time to be worried about that. His main focus was on what had happened, and Yoro’s safety.

He looked down towards his body to notice that what he had believed was true. Nothing had happened to him. It was an odd attack that was sent his way, but he felt that he was completely safe. In fact, he felt rather light and almost carefree. He wondered why this had occurred during a battle of all things, especially after a received attack.

Toad: [You seem confused.]

Nero: [I am. Your technique did not seem to cause any damage, nor did it plant anything on or inside me.]

Toad: [You’re right. I did none of those things. But you let your guard down, so I did you the favor of lowering it even further.]

Nero: [Lowering it? What do you mean?]

Toad: [That barrier thing, whatever you want to call it, it’s quite troublesome. It also seems to be there because you’re alert of what’s happening. It was my bad to try and test it earlier, but now that we have an understanding, it’s become clear on how to deal with it. My ability is called Sense of Control. I can change a few senses in your body, and lower or raise them depending on how I choose. Of course, this also includes how focused you are. I lowered your guard to a much greater point than it was at when you became distracted.]

Now it had all made sense to him. The reason he felt good, the reason he felt light, was due to this man’s ability. A problem had finally risen for both Yoro and Nero.

However, it would be alright. Yoro was skilled herself, so she could easily change her plan in a scenario such as this.

Nero: [I see. So your plan now is to do the same thing as before, is that correct?]

Frog: [Same as before? Nah. That’d be crazy. You’re a pain to deal with as is, even without the barrier. It’d be suicide to try and fight you. With that said though, there’s always a different method of getting around this stuff. My ability is called Swelling Emotions. Normally, I’d just use this to make people kill each other. I won’t give you all the details, but given the fact that we were able to realize what was goin on, do you wanna take a guess at what my ability did?]

Nero grew more confused at the non explanation Frog had given. He had struck Yoro earlier, and though she might have received an effect, what could it have possibly–

Yoro: [Neeeeneeeee…!♥]

Nero turned to face Yoro and was met with an unexpected appearance. She had a devilish smile on her face, the red that had not appeared since the day before once again arose on her cheeks. Her hands moved across her face and body as she spoke with him. Drool moving down her mouth as she gazed at him.

At that moment, their plan had revealed itself to Nero.

Nero: [You–]

Frog: [Guess you figured it out, huh? She seems real lovey dovey about you, so I decided to help her out a bit! I gave those emotions of hers a little touch up that I felt was needed.]

Nero was ready to respond to him once again, but was stopped by a love crazy girl jumping on him, pushing his body onto the floor.

Yoro: [Saaaaay…Nene….I really love you!♥]

He looked back at Yoro’s eyes. In its purest, most cruel form had been love. It corrupted her eyes to such a degree, and now he was staring at what lay within her own body. Her truest emotions.

As she spoke to him, Frog began to laugh.

Frog: [Hahahaha! Oh this is perfect! Now we can get an easy two for one kill! That’s really all it took.]

Toad: [Honestly, did they really expect to make it far if they’re going to lose in such a disgraceful manner?]

Their words continued to sting Nero as his focus remained on Yoro. She began to squirm side to side with her body on top of him as she once again spoke.

Yoro: [Nene! I really need you to know! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU A LOT! HEHE…HAHAHAHA♥]

Her smile grew even larger as her eyes straightened even further. Nero grew worried for her, but not out of fear over what she had become. Rather, he was still worried about her safety.

Yoro: [NENE! I NEED TO KNOW! I WANNA GET TO THIS STEP ALREADY! DO YOU LOVE ME?♥]

Yoro had passed a heavy question onto him

His expression did not change. It was the same expression he always had. When he was on his own, when he was not speaking with others, when he had nothing to think about, the same neutral expression was worn.

With this very expression, he spoke to Yoro.

Nero: [Yes. I love you. As much as I love my sister and the rest of my family, I love you with all of my heart, Yoro.]

His words brought a much greater smile to Yoro’s face. She grabbed his wrists with her hands and slammed them down onto the floor, leaving him wide open to her.

While she performed this action, Frog and Toad prepared a much stronger matōki blast.

Frog: [Perfect! She’s even got him in a good position!]

Toad: [Let’s finish this before they do anything disgusting.]

Two bright lights began to shine throughout the room, giving two different hues to both Nero and Yoro. As the powerful forces were being charged, Yoro once again spoke to Nero.

Yoro: [Nene…♥]

She moved her face even closer to his. They were at a range with each other where they could feel the breaths they had taken, and their lips had almost made contact. Yoro once again opened her mouth to speak, as her hot love filled breath was let out onto Nero’s face.

Yoro: [...Do you trust me?♥]

He laid there in silence for a few seconds, before a smile formed on his own face.

Nero: [With my life.]

Yoro closed her eyes, her hands began to twitch against Nero’s wrists as veins appeared on her head.

Yoro: [...Not yet.♥]

Her grip on his wrists was slowly weakening.

Yoro: [I want to. I really want to. But I won’t. We’ll have our moment. For this, and everything else. I want to be consumed, and consume you. Just like Kōkatsu said. But I’ll wait. No matter how long it takes, I’ll wait.♥]

Nero: [Are you sure? I would not mind this being our moment.]

Yoro: [Hehe! No. I think we’ll have a better opportunity. I have a good feeling we will.♥]

Yoro moved her hand across Nero’s arm, clutching his hand with her own. She turned to him once more.

Yoro: [Did you give it the same name I thought of?]

Nero: [I’m not very clever with this sort of thing, but I think I caught on.]

Yoro: [Hehe! You’re acting very kissable right now!♥]

The two continued to speak with their faces as close as possible to each other. As they did so, the two men on the opposite side of the room grew confused at their words.

Toad: [Are they trying to have some sort of proper chat while their death is near? Do they not realize the situation they are in?]

Frog: [WHAT THE FUCK IS ALL OF THIS?!]

Toad: [Frog? What do you–]

Toad then looked down to see it. Their matōki blasts faded upon noticing. The plan they had used against Yoro and Nero was calculated. It was well thought out. It would have worked…had a plan not been decided by the couple themselves. Despite the techniques that had been used against them, their willpower pushed through all of it. From the sparks of their resolve came a wildfire of a plan that the duo was not ready for.

Underneath them was a trail of sparkling matōki. It stretched across the entire area from where Yoro’s hand had been, to where the two were standing. They were surrounded with nowhere to move. However, matōki was one thing in and of itself. What resided beside the matōki was small flowers of ice, with the exact same pattern in placement as Yoro had done.

Their plan had been clear to Nero and Yoro.

And now…

The plan of the mighty couple was clear to them.

Yoro: [I wasn’t a fan of your comments earlier, speaking about your fellow guards like that. But now after what you did to me and Nene, I’m really mad. You should consider yourselves lucky that Nene wanted me not to kill both of you, or maybe you shouldn’t. After all, I don’t think I can hold back that much anymore.]

Frog: [SHIT!]

Toad: [HK!]

As the two attempted to move out of the way, the grip of Nero and Yoro’s hands only grew stronger.

Yoro: [Together, Nene!]

Nero: [Right!]

The matōki began to shine while the ice began to crackle. It was all too clear on what would soon happen.

Nero and Yoro: [Ice…Cream!]

A large trail of fluffy matōki formed into a larger and larger mass as it went on. On top of it was a layer of ice, securing the blast within its hard shell. Toad and Frog were then stuck in between both attacks, before receiving the explosion from the matōki attack. It shattered the ice around them, and left a cloud of smoke where they were.

What came falling out of the smoke were two unconscious bodies that were charred to a crisp. They were still alive, but their burns that had been produced by both means would likely be permanent.

As they fell to the floor below, Yoro moved off of Nero and assisted him with standing up.

Yoro: [As requested, they’re alive.]

Nero: [I must say, that was rather clever, Yoyo. I found the build up of matōki rather odd at first, but I understood where you were going shortly after.]

Yoro: [I probably would have thought of something like this anyways, but it’s especially thanks to that talk between you and Shiro that helped me really figure out what to do! From there, I just tried my best to get it all ready. Sorry for worrying you there, by the way. I got nervous and I didn’t want you to get hurt.]

Nero: [It’s alright. I had the same feeling shortly after, so we are both guilty of this.]

The two smiled at each other as each of their hands met.

Nero: [You have quite the good resistance towards your own emotions.]

Yoro: [I just did as I was told. I’m taking things step by step. No matter what my body desires, my heart will remain pure for you!♥]

As they continued to stare at their beaming gazes, noises of slapping could be heard in the hallway behind them. The two of them quickly changed their focus towards where the noise was coming from, and they were met with a disheveled looking kitsune who was holding Kōkatsu in pain within her arms.

Nero: [This is rather unfortunate…]

Yoro: [So that crazy bitch lost, huh?]

As they readied themselves to battle once again, Kiyomi shouted to them.

Kiyomi: [Please! Is there someone in your group named Kaoru?! I need to see her immediately! Lady Kōkatsu needs her help!]

The couple grew shocked as they heard her desperate words.

Nero: [Lady Kōkatsu?]

Yoro: [Even if she says that, I’m not buying it. These people are clever, so this might just be a ploy to get us while we’re not paying attention.]

Her trust was still not gained. Within her arms, Kōkatsu spoke in a hoarse, quiet voice.

Kōkatsu: [Guys…’s alright…She’s…]

Kiyomi: [VERY WELL! I WILL PROVE IT TO YOU!]

Kiyomi gently put Kōkatsu down, and lept high up into the air, charging towards them.

Nero: [She’s coming at us!]

Yoro: [So I was rig–]

Before they could provide a counter attack, Kiyomi had jumped past them. They turned to face her only to find the two from earlier slowly getting up in front of her. Before they could even speak, they were grabbed by their throats and held in the air.

Toad: [ACK! KIYO…MI…STOP!...WE’RE SORRY FOR WHAT WE…]

Frog: [CHILL, KI! CHILL! WE’RE…PALS….RI–]

Kiyomi: [DORIYAAAAAAAAAAAAH!]

Before they could even finish, their bodies were thrusted into the floor. The only thing that had remained visible to the other three in the room was the waist below of the duo hanging in the air. A horrified look was now worn by both Nero and Yoro.

Yoro: [...Wrong. I was wrong. I was very much wrong.]

Kōkatsu: [Guys…don’t worry…She’s on our side…]

Nero: [I know you’re having a hard time with seeing what has unfolded, Kōkatsu, but we can…well…we can tell that she is…I think. Are those two still alive?]

Right as Nero asked, the legs of the two men moved in a slight twitch.

Yoro: [...We’re gonna go with they’re still alive. Alive being the keyword here.]

The second battle within Daroma’s castle had ended.

What had once ended in a beautiful performance of love, quickly received an encore from the essence of raw brutal power.
