Chapter 8
The petals swirling like snowflakes were truly beautiful.
The welcoming crowd at the dock was beyond my sight, as the sound of loud cheers and applause echoed in my ears.
Although it was a grand welcome ceremony, it was a fitting reception for the hero to illuminate the darkest era.
The officials from the cult who came from afar embraced us with open arms in the humid, heated atmosphere of the dock.
At a glance, they seemed to be simple folk, but I could read the swirling desires in their eyes.
A sticky air invaded with unidentifiable emotions clung to the place.
There, the hero and the cardinal shook hands.

Episode 2 – Heroes of the Continent
The schedule was tighter than expected.
We had meals with dignitaries, brief meetings with the cardinal, and exchanged greetings with visiting foreign guests.
It’s quite unusual to extend such treatment to individuals who aren’t national leaders or high officials.
The cult provided us with the most significant honor they could muster for a civilian and three soldiers.
The reason for such treatment was the uniqueness of our hero.
The representative of the gods. The hero validated by history. The greatest variable in battle and diplomacy. The meanings encapsulated in the countless words describing the hero were not to be taken lightly. Camila Lowell and I, her colleague, stepped foot into the cult with the status of honored guests.
Initially, Pippin, Jake, and I were overwhelmed by the heat of the thronging crowd, but soon we adapted to the atmosphere of the cult. We couldn’t afford to let our sentiments wander, as our mission was of utmost importance.
The one who couldn’t hide her excitement in this situation was none other than the hero, Camila Lowell.
“Wow! Frederick, this place is gorgeous!”
She seemed to bounce back to life after feeling deathly seasick earlier.
Camila Lowell, with her crimson hair fluttering, hopped around like a tourist in a foreign land, taking great interest in the architectural style and lifestyles of the cult. The people of the cult guiding us didn’t seem displeased by her actions; rather, they welcomed her reactions positively.
“Ha ha! Are you enjoying it, Hero?”
“Yes!”
Cardinal Raphael, the head of the reception, was also one of those enjoying her reaction.
Although I had been instructed to shake off the leeches clinging to the hero, it was hardly appropriate to tell the cardinal, “Keep your distance from the hero.” Besides, this was the cult’s turf. The cardinal had considerable influence in this neighborhood; I had no means or justification to intervene.
I decided to overlook it as mere charm. It was a harsh world; being overly unsympathetic could get one stabbed.
“Pippin, keep an eye on the hero. You know what I mean?”
“Understood, Colonel.”
Good. With Pippin by the hero’s side, I didn’t need to worry about that anymore.
I listened to the brief report Jake had prepared.
“The hero’s current schedule involves a city tour. After this schedule, accommodations will be assigned, and after taking a short break, there’s a dinner to attend. There’s rest set until tomorrow morning afterward.”
“Have you checked the list of attendees for the dinner?”
“It’s all cult officials. Foreign dignitaries are expected to attend from the next dinner onward.”
“Right, right. Contact our embassy and have them send me the profiles of the foreigners staying with the cult.”
“Yes.”
There’s still so much to prepare.
I was beginning to wonder if I was a companion of the hero or simply just a caregiver.
“Well, with a beauty like that, wouldn’t it be worth the effort to take care of her?”
“Shut up.”
“In truth, Colonel, you think she’s great too, don’t you?”
“If you keep it up, I might have to stuff a bullet in your mouth.”
The blond tanned punk started blabbering and moving swiftly. Now that I was informed of the hero’s schedule, it was time to check our plans.
“I’m maintaining communication with the embassy and continuously receiving information. It seems we have identified the foreigners staying at the cult and the citizens from the kingdom.”
“Are there any such people with excessive thoughts here?”
“No. I don’t see any dissidents. Mostly, they’ve already moved to the empire or third countries, so it’s unlikely we’d find them here.”
Okay.
For now, it seems there are no subversive elements in the cult’s territory.
“Colonel Clevenz mentioned that there’s an agent at the embassy. Jake, you drop your things at the accommodations and meet with that person to gather some information.”
“Yes.”
“It’ll seem odd if Pippin stays too close to the hero. Starting tomorrow, I’ll take the mark on the hero myself. Pippin will gather information from the accommodations, and you’ll meet people from outside.”
“Understood. But meeting with foreign ministry folks or information agents is something suited for someone of your rank, Colonel. They’ll likely all be of a higher status than me.”
Jake looked surprisingly uneasy for someone with his appearance. Understandably so. The people residing in the foreign embassy would at least be nobles, if not of a higher rank than a lieutenant.
But with the hero’s backing, we could disregard that.
“We’re specially dispatched individuals from our home country, so it doesn’t matter. If someone throws a fit about rank, let me know. I’ll take care of it.”
“Whoa, I almost fell for you just now. I love you, Colonel.”
“Cut it out.”
“If you keep spouting nonsense, your jaw might get reset.”
Jake chuckled and continued flipping through his notebook. Now that I learned the hero’s plan, it was time to check our own.
“I’m still receiving information while maintaining communication with the embassy. It seems we’ve pinpointed the identities and locations of foreigners and residents of the kingdom staying at the cult.”
“Are there those with excessive thoughts among them?”

“Yes.”
