Chapter 59: A Harbringer's welcome

After Boran and his group returned to the kingdom, Boran faced a harsh reprimand from the king. Losing Kael, a key figure in their kingdom, had dealt a severe blow to their plans, and the king was furious upon hearing about the failed dungeon expedition. The sight of the kingdom's elite warriors returning in tattered clothing and with haggard faces only added to the king's ire.

That day became a mark of shame for Boran, a reminder of a mission gone disastrously wrong.

In the aftermath, Boran threw himself into his duties, trying to regain his standing and prove his worth. Just a week after the disastrous return, a new crisis emerged—a dungeon break on the kingdom's southern border. The monsters, though from a low-level dungeon, were repelled with relative ease.

Boran saw this as an opportunity to restore his reputation, organizing the defenses and swiftly dealing with the threat.

However, the situation quickly escalated. Just days after the initial break, another occurred, then another. Boran grew suspicious; dungeon breaks of this frequency were unusual, suggesting that something—or someone—was interfering with the natural order. His concerns were overshadowed by the immediate need to defend the kingdom.

Two weeks later, the dungeon breaks continued unabated, overwhelming the kingdom's defenses. Even the king, a warrior of great renown and a Great Transcendent, had to join the defense efforts. Despite their best efforts, the situation deteriorated.

After several months of relentless attacks, the kingdom declared a state of emergency, desperately calling for aid from neighboring kingdoms and offering substantial bounties for mercenaries willing to join the fight. But their remote location meant reinforcements would be slow to arrive.

The citizens could only pray for salvation as they faced the grim reality of their situation: they were surrounded, with no escape route and insufficient manpower to evacuate the vulnerable.

In a dimly lit war room, Boran sat surrounded by the kingdom's high-ranking officials, discussing strategies to repel the relentless waves of monsters. The king, normally present to guide these critical discussions, was absent, fighting a powerful adversary at the frontlines in the East of the kingdom. As the head commander, Boran was left to lead the meeting, but his usual confidence was shaken.

"I don't know what to do," Boran confessed, his voice heavy with fatigue and despair. It had been weeks since he had a proper night's sleep, and the continuous fighting had drained the kingdom's resources and morale. The loss of Kael, who had been vital for logistics and strategy, was a painful reminder of their vulnerability.

The officials in the room shared his despondency, their faces mirroring the hopelessness that pervaded the kingdom. They had tried everything within their power to hold the line, but the constant onslaught was taking its toll. It was becoming increasingly clear that this orchestrated series of dungeon breaks was the work of a third party, though knowing this brought little comfort or solution.

Suddenly, the heavy doors of the war room burst open, and the king entered, his golden armor stained with blood and his face etched with exhaustion. The room fell silent, and everyone rose to bow, but the king waved off the formalities with a weary hand. He slumped into his chair, his presence commanding yet visibly worn from the relentless battles.

"An army of monsters, 100,000 strong, is approaching from the north," the king announced, his voice grim. "Some of these monsters are armored, clearly organized. At least 200 of them are of great calamity rank. This is not a random assault; someone is orchestrating this." He paused, letting the gravity of the situation sink in. "Make peace with your loved ones and say your prayers.

We will make our last stand here. Reinforcements will not arrive in time."

The room was heavy with despair, and quiet sobs could be heard from some of the officials. The realization that they were facing a force beyond their capacity to repel settled in. Even at their peak, with Kael among them, they would have struggled against such overwhelming odds. Now, with their forces depleted and the king himself barely holding on, the prospect seemed bleak.

One by one, the officials left the room, their spirits utterly broken. Only Boran and the king remained. Boran, his voice filled with resolve, spoke, "My king, I will fight to my last breath for this kingdom and for you."

The king, his gaze distant and unreadable, did not respond. The weight of their impending doom was palpable, and words felt hollow against the grim reality they faced. All that was left was to wait, to brace for the inevitable clash that would end the kingdom's fate.

Two days before the monster army was set to arrive at the gates of Avaloria, the kingdom buzzed with a grim determination. The people, regardless of whether they were soldiers or civilians, men or women, armed themselves with whatever they could find. Bakers clutched their pans, gardeners held hoes, and painters gripped small daggers.

Though their weapons were rudimentary, they refused to face death without a fight. This defiance spread through the ranks, igniting a spark of courage in the weary soldiers. Inspired by the bravery of the civilians, the kingdom's armory was thrown open, distributing any available armor and weapons to those willing to stand against the oncoming horde.

The atmosphere was one of resigned valor; they knew their chances were slim, but they chose to face their fate head-on.

Atop the castle, the king and his grand mage, Von Fraimus Callaburn, gazed over the anxious preparations. The grand mage turned to the king, his voice heavy with concern. "We can still escape, my friend. I could teleport us to a distant land where we could start anew."

The king looked at Von with a tired smile. "The idea is tempting, but I cannot abandon my people. How could I live with the guilt, knowing I fled while they stood and fought?" The king's eyes hardened with resolve. "Von Fraimus Callaburn, I release you from your duties as grand mage. By my authority, you are evicted from your position. Go, my friend.

Thank you for everything you have done. My journey ends here, but yours does not."

Von paused, a mixture of emotions playing across his face. "You're using that tactic, huh? Very well, if the king commands, I must obey." He took a deep breath. "King Leroy IV of Avaloria, it has been my honor to serve you. I will step down from my position," he paused again, his eyes meeting the king's with a fierce determination, "and join this fight as a mercenary."

The king chuckled softly, "A truly stubborn man indeed."

They shared a moment of quiet camaraderie, looking out over the city they had both fought to protect. As they stood there, a strange phenomenon appeared on the horizon—a red portal materializing above the advancing monster horde. The sight was both ominous and intriguing, hinting at a new and unexpected development in the battle that lay ahead.
