Chapter 38
October 14th
“White Wing! Captain of the [Duty] Magical Girl! Park! Saebyeok! I’ve come to the Supernatural Ability Response Team for an urgent matter!”
“Ah, yes… please, come in.”
Step step
A girl in military uniform with a pink bob and a soft pink aura walked in, taking a deep breath.
“Hmm… the scent of cheap goods!”
The smells of perfumes and shampoos from the 1-Star magical girls of the Supernatural Ability Response Team wafted through the building after their service activities.
It felt like the building itself was cloaked in a sweet pink fragrance.
‘This is a scent I can’t find among our squad members.’
Park Saebyeok, a middle school and high school graduate now serving in the military, knew very well that a whiff of perfume couldn’t exist in a place where only girls gathered.
This was the scent of cheap and artificial things implanted by society.
It was exceedingly displeasing.
“Kang Dorim! Where are you?!”
Park Saebyeok sniffed around, recalling the scent of the person she needed to see today.
The smell was like a mix of carbonated drinks and potato chips, left to fester on a keyboard for a week.
Bang!
“Yah?!”
“Park, Park Saebyeok?! Why are you here again?!”
“Hey! Go play with your unit!”
The 1-Star magical girls of the response team, who were snacking and taking a break, stared at Park Saebyeok in shock.
“Sorry to intrude during your break.”
Bang!
“Kang Dorim!”
“Ah?! Is the minister’s assassin here?!”
“Ah, Team Leader, my apologies. White Wing!”
Bang!
“Kang Dorim!”
“Ah, Park Saebyeok! What the hell is going on?!”
Kang Dorim was controlling her avatars while watching dozens of monitors in the office, and there were snack crumbs and leftover drink cans strewn about.
And there was someone cleaning up the mess.
‘Hmm? A newbie? Similar hair color to Kang Dorim, are they relatives?’
A woman in a formal skirt was tidying up, her ash-gray hair tied back.
On her prominently hanging name tag above her chest, the name ‘Kang Eunbit’ was written.
“Park Saebyeok, why have you barged in again?”
“Is it that annoying for a supernatural ability user to visit the Supernatural Ability Response Team?”
“Someone like you is indeed annoying.”
“Though I’m not your superior, I am your elder. Wouldn’t it be better to show some respect?”
“Whatever, you barely rank as a private!”
“I’ve just been commissioned as an honorary captain after completing a nationwide tour of treatment!”
Even with Park Saebyeok’s words, Dorim continued to respond unbothered.
“Okay, Captain Korea, could you please take your leave?”
“Service period doesn’t matter! What’s important is the will!”
“Alright, elder, don’t forget your dentures on the way out, okay?”
“More importantly, we need a patient! We need to find a patient for our proud White Wing unit to save!”
“Are you insane? There are three members on standby at critical care centers in the major hospitals nationwide!”
Park Saebyeok shot back with a resolute voice, as if dismissing Kang Dorim’s words.
“Just thinking about the sick citizens who can’t even reach us right now makes my teeth chatter!”
Kang Dorim grumbled and tossed the list, while Park Saebyeok caught dozens of documents before they hit the ground, standing with impeccable posture.
“Those are requests for assistance from regional traffic hospitals, so go check them out.”
“Thanks! I heard you also do treatment services with your avatars, how about joining the White Wing unit?”
Kang Dorim silently raised her middle finger.
Park Saebyeok looked at her disapprovingly.
“Um, excuse me, Major.”
“Huh?”
“I’m sorry, but could you please step aside? I need to clean up that trash underneath you.”
“Ah, ah, my bad.”
Park Saebyeok stepped back with poise, watching the girl named Kang Eunbit.
As Kang Eunbit dispassionately picked up the trash and tossed it into a bag, she suddenly asked Park Saebyeok.
“So, how long has it been since you enlisted?”
“Um, I enlisted in July this year, so I’m three months in now.”
“In just three months, you’ve awakened a special ability and became a captain…”
Kang Eunbit’s eyes, which had been half-closed, twitched as she tried to find the right words, hanging her head low.
Park Saebyeok tilted her head, seemingly confused by this response.
“Oh right, Kang Dorim.”
“What now?”
“I heard there’s a non-bloomed 2-Star magical girl discovered in Busan. Is it still tough to persuade her?”
“I’ve tried since two years ago, given that she just dropped out of school and roams the beach, but it’s a complete failure.”
Gasp!
Kang Eunbit, surprised by their conversation, couldn’t catch on as Park Saebyeok and Kang Dorim were focused on their tasks, staring at the support requests and monitors.
“I’ve heard that American headhunters are roaming around trying to recruit magical girls not affiliated with national organizations.”
“Is it just the US? Brokers from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are making all kinds of excuses to lurk around, so they might just hide when they see foreign brokers.”
“Hm, she must be a sensitive individual.”
Snap!
After reviewing all the support requests, Park Saebyeok straightened the documents and held them firmly.
“Anyway, I got it. I’ll be taking my leave now.”
As Park Saebyeok walked by, she glanced at Kang Eunbit, who was still cleaning up the garbage generated in real time.
“Kang Dorim, how about you do the cleaning yourself instead of leaving it to others?”
“Eunbit said she’d do it since she’s bored.”
“It’s something I volunteered to do because I was bored.”
“Why is Eunbit referred to as ‘sister’ while I am not?!”
“Because you’re just a crazy girl.”
“That’s truly unpleasant! But I’ll forgive you!”
Thump!
“White Wing! Captain Park! Saebyeok! I’ll return after finishing my business at the Supernatural Ability Response Team!”
Park Saebyeok saluted, and Kang Dorim responded with a rude gesture.
*
We’ve been quite busy over the past three weeks.
Three weeks ago, Sanghyuk and Dorim calmly accepted that magical girls would eventually have to fight monsters and that evil gods wished for society to collapse due to human desires before that could happen in [Magical Girl HAZARD].
“Are you that easily convinced?”
“Of course, the magical girls appearing around the world and what the magical girl from [Start] has shown isn’t enough to fully trust, but we still need to consider it.”
Sanghyuk shrugged his shoulders as he said this.
“You can’t just close your ears to the existence in the background while trusting the visible powers of magical girls.”
“It feels a bit different from merely sensing it vaguely and being told about it, but the actions remain the same.”
“What’s important isn’t the little details but the direction we’re heading in.”
The two who treated humanity’s destruction as a trivial detail began to discuss whatever must be guaranteed for Korea’s magical girls before the formal domain declaration.
1. Recognize us as an independent decision-making body, not a subordinate agency of the council.
2. Respect the response team and the White Wing unit as a nationally certified organization, similar to cheerleading teams or security teams.
3. Ensure the garden operates as a protective agency for magical girls, not as a representative body of a specific nation.
They even drafted an oath that promised to protect magical girls while refraining from interfering in national interests.
“Now, we just need to bring this up as a motion.”
“The problem is that I think there will be more people who won’t see this purely.”
“[Start] is essentially a hero of Japan and hasn’t operated in Korea.”
“Should we just do this ourselves? I can do it right now.”
“Oh, Eunbit, can you hang on a second?”
Dorim stopped me with a serious expression.
“I feel like even if I, a purely Korean person, initiate something, there would be people saying this doesn’t count as a reason.”
“Government work is always like that.”
Sanghyuk shrugged again, lightly tapping the desk.
“We have clear tasks and plans, but we can’t get started because there’s no public opinion.”
We all stared at the finalized plan and oath for a while before concluding our meeting.
Later, Sanghyuk carefully gauged opinions while going back and forth between ministerial meetings and the Blue House, and Dorim stayed busy organizing various magical girl-related issues happening in many countries.
Just as I thought about Sato Hana and the Master while maintaining the social structure, I hoped that Dorim and Sanghyuk could also find the maximum consensus for Korea in this world.
“Eunbit, let’s go grab some soup.”
“The seolleongtang place?”
“Yeah, that place is filling and tastes great.”
“It had rich broth and lots of meat too.”
“Seriously, sister, why don’t you just naturalize in Korea?”
Around lunchtime, Dorim told me that the seolleongtang place she mentioned was one that those in the neighborhood knew about, and it gets crowded if we go at the right time, so we had to go late today.
“Well then, sis, let’s go wash our hands in the restroom first.”
“Okay.”
I shook off the dust that had settled on my formal skirt and stepped outside, believing that if Dorim acted like my secretary, no one would bother us.
‘I even dyed my hair to match with Dorim, but no one seems to care.’
Since it was well past lunchtime, the streets were quieter than expected, and we arrived at the seolleongtang place we’d been to on our first day in Korea.
“Boss! Two regulars here.”
“Oh, Dorim! I see you’ve come! Two regulars!”
Dorim ordered our meals while manipulating her avatars through her VR goggles.
“Dorim, I’ve never seen you take that off; doesn’t it make you dizzy?”
I can barely handle 6 avatars without my head spinning.
“As long as there’s a connection, it’s easy to manage hundreds or even thousands.”
I couldn’t help but admire her genuinely.
While she may not have noticeable combat power or physical strength, her capacity for information gathering and analysis was extraordinary.
We sat in silence waiting for our meals, and I had nothing to do so I watched the news playing in the seolleongtang shop.
Suddenly, a breaking news alert flashed across the entertainment channel.
[Breaking news, the suspicious explosion incidents during magical girls’ treatment events in Europe are all linked to the same perpetrator…]
[Suspected terrorism due to supernatural abilities…]
[Reports have emerged about a successful coup using supernatural abilities in the Middle East…]
“Uh… what the hell?!”
Dorim suddenly broke into a cold sweat and screamed.
“Uh, sister!! Let’s return to headquarters immediately!!”
The moment Dorim pulled off her goggles, her eyes were wildly shaking.
Behind her, the pale-faced newscaster continued reporting on the news.
[Breaking news!]
[The Chinese government has declared a state of emergency and is bombarding its own territory with missiles!]
