Ella slowly drew her's almost silently with the blade glinting in the sunlight. The Duchess placed her hand on the hilt of her sword while her eyes scanned the area for any signs of movement. Nessa closed her eyes and began to channel mana into her hand as her fingers glowed with a soft green light.
"Evelyn you're still lacking the strength to be fully involved" I said turning to my sister who only gazed at me with a calm expression.
"Just keep your distance and attack whenever you see an opening." I said expecting to hear complaining or something of the sort but was surprised when she nodded calmly.
"Okay" Evelyn replied surprising me with her quick agreement as causing a weird expression to fill my face.
"What's with the look?" She glared at me for a second and I quickly looked away not wanting to provoke her.
"And Leon" I said turning to the dark-skinned man.
"Stay out of sight." I didn't bother to suppress my words giving Leon a blank look.
"..yes" His eye twitched but he agreed after a second filing me with a small amount of satisfaction.
We all fell into a tense silence as we climbed up the hill, The sand shifted beneath our feet as we made our way to the top causing Nessa and Leon to both almost fall multiple times. As we crested the ridge I couldn't help but frown as I saw a large dead beast lying in the sand below us. It looked like a lion but its reddish golden fur was matted and its body was covered in deep gashes and wounds.
"That's the beast you guys were tracking?" I asked Evelyn who nodded slightly with her eyes fixed on the dead animal.
"Yes" She said with her voice barely above a whisper.
"Although it wasn't like this before" I exchanged a glance with Ella to my side at my sister's words who nodded back at me.
We continued down the hill as the smell of decay filled the air as we approached the carcass. My eyes narrowed seeing that the skin was torn, as if something had nibbled along it and I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as I looked at the damage.
"Where did you see the—" I turned to speak toward Evelyn once more but my words were cut off as a loud clang rang out.
I quickly drew my blade swinging it down to meet a pair of long and sharp black claws that appeared from nowhere. I grit my teeth feeling the power behind the track and my muscles ached slightly, but I held firm with my eyes locking onto the figure in front of me.
"Impressive" A voice that sounded like a screech filled the air as I got a glimpse of the disgusting creature before me.
It almost looked like a human with four limbs but its skin was dark gray and its eyes were void black. Long horns curled atop its head almost like some sort of crown with the ends pointing down toward her ground, I had seen many demons before but this was undoubtedly the first time I had fought one that looked so much like a human.
"But not good enough" The demon sneered as I paused taking on its appearance and before I could react it disappeared reappearing behind me in an instant.
"What—" I barely had time to think as I saw the sharp claws moving toward my exposed back.
The fast movement left me helpless but I didn't panic and flexed the muscles In my arm and prepared to take the injury and respond. As the claws grew closer time seemed to pause for a second and a clarity I had never experienced before over took me, I felt calm with not a shred of panic in my body.
"Earth bullet!" A sweet voice rang out rang out in the silence and my eyes landed on Nessa who was scrunching her face while holding up her hand.
Before the demon's claws could touch me a piece of circular wood tore through the air at a speed that was hard to react.
