Chapter 68: A Little Jealous
Caelum wriggled back to the burrow, his body still adjusting to the changes brought by his evolution. The Scholar Pupal Larva form had definitely made him stronger, sharper, and more in tune with the world around him. He was eager to share this with Aurelia, but a small part of him felt uneasy.
As he neared the entrance, Aurelia crawled out to meet him. Her movements were slower, more deliberate, and her bright eyes glinted with curiosity. She must have sensed the change in him before he even said a word.
"So, what’s new with you?" she asked through their telepathic link, her tone light but a little guarded.
Caelum hesitated for a moment. He could feel her picking up on his emotions and knew he had to tread carefully. "I... evolved," he finally said, the words awkward as they lingered in the air between them.
"Evolved?" Aurelia’s tone shifted, a mix of surprise and—was that annoyance?
"Yeah, I’m a Scholar Pupal Larva now. I gained some new skills, and..." He stopped, noticing that her antennae twitched slightly, and her body tensed.
"You evolved without telling me?" Her voice was laced with frustration, and Caelum could feel a prickle of guilt rise within him. "You didn’t even consult me?"
Caelum blinked, his mandibles twitching nervously. He hadn’t expected this reaction. "I didn’t think—"
"Exactly," she cut him off, her tone sharp. "You didn’t think."
She turned away slightly, and Caelum could feel her emotions rolling off her in waves—jealousy, frustration, maybe even a hint of sadness. She had always been slower to evolve, her progress measured compared to his. But it wasn’t her fault. They were different creatures with different evolutionary paths, but Caelum could see how it weighed on her.
He wriggled closer, lowering himself slightly to be on her level. "I’m sorry," he said softly, sending a wave of genuine remorse through their telepathic link. "I didn’t mean to leave you out. I just... I was focused on getting stronger, on surviving."
Aurelia didn’t respond immediately, but she didn’t pull away either. Caelum took that as a good sign. "Look," he continued, "I know it’s not fair that I evolve faster, but that doesn’t mean you’re not important. You’re strong, Aurelia, in your own way. And I believe in you."
Her antennae twitched slightly, and her emotions seemed to soften a bit. "I’m just... frustrated," she admitted after a moment. "You’re always moving forward, and I feel like I’m stuck in the same place."
Caelum gave her a reassuring nudge. "You’re not stuck. You’ve been improving too. I’ve seen it. Your skills are amazing, and your strength has been growing. You’ll evolve soon enough, I know it."
There was a long pause before Aurelia finally turned to face him again, her eyes less sharp, more understanding. "I just don’t want to be left behind."
"You won’t be," Caelum said firmly. "We’re in this together."
Aurelia sighed, the tension between them slowly ebbing away. "Okay, okay," she relented. "But next time, at least tell me before you go off and do something crazy like evolving without warning me."
Caelum chuckled through their link, the weight of the moment lifting. "I promise."
With that small conflict resolved, Caelum felt a bit lighter. But there was still something he needed to share. Something that had been gnawing at him since his evolution.
"There’s something else I need to tell you," he said, his tone becoming more serious.
Aurelia looked at him curiously. "What is it?"
"It’s about the evolutions," Caelum explained, his voice thoughtful. "I’ve been seeing the next evolution options for a while now, and... there’s something about them that’s bothering me."
Aurelia tilted her head slightly, listening intently. "Go on."
"The cocoons," Caelum began, feeling a knot of anxiety forming in his stomach. "I’ve seen some options that lead to these cocoon forms, and they’re powerful, really powerful. But there’s a catch..."
"A catch?" Aurelia echoed.
"Yeah," Caelum said grimly. "When you evolve into a cocoon, you’re completely defenseless. You have to stay in the cocoon for days without being able to move or fight. It’s like going into hibernation. You’re stuck in one place, completely vulnerable. The level increases by itself but you can’t fight anybody if attacked. Makes me wonder how any cocoon even survives here."
Aurelia's antennae twitched, a concerned wave of thought reaching Caelum. "How long are we talking about?"
"All of them are different days but there is one with seven days," he replied, the words heavy in the air between them. "Seven whole days where you can’t do anything but wait for the evolution to finish."
Aurelia went quiet for a moment, digesting the information. "That... sounds dangerous," she said finally. "What if something attacks during that time? You’d be helpless."
"Exactly," Caelum said, the worry creeping back into his voice. "It’s too risky. Right now, I’m evolving into forms where I can still fight and survive, but I feel like there will come a time when there will only be cocoon formations left. At some point, I’ll have to make that choice. But..."
"But it’s terrifying," Aurelia finished for him, understanding dawning in her thoughts. "You’re worried about being so vulnerable."
"Yeah," Caelum admitted. "I don’t know when, but eventually, I’ll have to evolve into one of those forms. And when that happens... I’ll need to trust that we can make it through those days without getting killed."
Aurelia was quiet for a while, processing everything. Caelum could feel her mind working, weighing the risks just as he had been doing.
Finally, she spoke. "It sounds terrifying, but... you won’t be alone. We’ve survived everything else together. When that time comes, we’ll figure it out. You’ve got me, and I’ve got you. We’ll be okay."
Caelum felt a warmth spreading through him, not just from her words but from the strength behind them. Aurelia was right. They had survived this long together, and they would continue to survive. The future was uncertain, but at least they had each other.
"Thanks, Aurelia," Caelum said softly, the tension in his chest easing.
"You’d better be grateful," she teased lightly, her tone returning to its usual playful edge. "Now, let’s stop worrying about cocoons for a bit. We’ve got enough problems without adding future ones to the pile. Help me carry these leaves inside."
