Denizens of the Labyrinth

They had stayed in the forest for two days; Jazmel and his friends were well rested, and the hospitality of the elves had been wonderful. Jazmel had not spoken to Sadé’s mother alone, but Entil and he had spoken a few times in passing about the different things Jazmel had seen inside the labyrinth too. When they decided to leave, Entil showed them to a large fountain inside the centre of the elven domain and told them all that this was the gate.

The fountain was made of marble, the stone unblemished and pure white. Though marble it looked like alabaster had been used in parts to give it a glossier look. The figure head was a maiden, a shrouded woman who with open palms was raising her hands to the sky and water plumed from the cradle her hands made. The water encompassed her and danced off the body to fall in different directions into the pool below her feet. It was a wondrous design and Jazmel could tell it had been designed and built with love and admiration.

“Not all gates between floors are actually gates.” He told them and Jazmel remembered that when they had all been aboard the galleon they had passed through the sea and the system had alluded to it being a gate.

“Simply throw a coin into the fountain and it will move you on to the next floor.” Entil explained and in turn they all began to say their byes before turning back to the fountain.

“Say bye to your family in law.” Katie whispered to Jazmel, and he grew hot with embarrassment, she enjoyed teasing him about Sadé and she knew he knew it too.

He shook hands with Entil, feeling miniature in his presence. Araea, Sadé’s mother embraced him and whispered a small prayer over him. He almost choked up, having never known his own mother, he did not have much interaction with women older than him. But that simple show of affection, flowed through him and blurred his gaze.

He turned and watched as Patton flicked a coin into the pool, he disappeared. Turning into a ball of light and then sinking into the fountain, they all followed suit and Jazmel did the same. Feeling his stomach lurch as the fountain pulled him in. While in the fountain he felt the system peal.
