Fate loves to take me from behind and then up in the air
Eric felt a bit conflicted. Obviously, Nol was strong and could take care of these demons himself but since Nol remained unmoved and seemingly ignored them, the demons got even angrier and started to hurl insults at him. Although they were trying not to harm him since he was a prince.
Eric hid behind a corner, knowing that it wasn't before soon they'd actually charge at him.
"What are you doing? Just leave! I swear this brat has too much pride," Eric hissed in a small voice while he couldn't stand the theatre. He should leave.
Eric was a highly logical person, he rarely acted on emotions, cough, well mostly before coming to the Demon World. Eric, despite seeming like a holy and charitable person, actually put himself first.
This was his nature but because he was two-faced, he pretended to be an image of himself many knew and loved. However, right now no one knew or saw Eric, so there was no reputation for him to uphold.
In other words, his oh-so-dear student Nol, this little dipshit could burn in hell! There was no way any of these common demons could hurt the second strongest demon in the Demon World. Eric was about to tiptoe away when he made the most fatal mistake the whole universe has ever made, except for fucking sending him to the Demon World, by looking back.
Oh, the cursed looking back and not looking back that always happens when two people who obviously love each other push the other away in the middle of the damn city and they part while hoping the other would look back while they're looking back but actually the other only looks back when the other doesn't, so they magically still see the other while half of the fucking city is between them and-
Either way, the point was that Eric shouldn't have given the crowd one last look because just at that moment, oh how the universe's sarcasm worked, a small gap opened up in the mob and Nol's eyes met with Eric's. The doom Eric felt! Eric's force of habit to care about his reputation instantly broke the bar!
If Eric left now when Nol obviously saw him, it would only prove Nol's knowledge that Eric was a scum hiding in angel's clothes. Eric also apologised to Nol 'wholeheartedly' and 'sincerely' and even promised to be a good teacher to Nol and treat him right. How the fuck could Eric walk away now? Eric might be a scum when it came to authors but Eric still had morals!
Morals to uphold his reputation of course. Eric took a deep breath and looked at Nol again but the crowd already swallowed him. Ah, the universe really took the piss out of him. On purpose!
Nol and Eric met eyes on purpose. What was fate? This was so-called forced upon destiny and already predestined fate that those bloody protagonist in those bloody stories always try to fight against with cringy, shitty lines like 'I decide my own fate' 'No one but me has any say in my life.'
Like, chill the fuck out, no matter how much you want to control your own life it's fucking impossible! Why? Because life fucks you over a trillion times, mocking your naivety and stupidity.
I mean look at me! The most envied person on earth thinking everything was in my hands then? Then a fucking being of a demon that should not exist came dilly-dallying his way into my life out of nowhere to take the reins of my life out of my hands and slap me a 1000 times till I'm cursed and ended up in a fucking world that should be fictional!
Yes, exactly! And now, I've to 'save', ah yeah, save the oh-so-poor useless princess who doesn't need help at all but because she caught her prince charming and fucking fate willed it so, the very bastard and dipshit brat who ruined my life and makes me want to slap any heroic, badass, optimistic and oh-so-cool protagonist a 1000 times in the butt until those cheated and shit inside their intestines, I have to go and save him!
Fuck! This is what cruel fate is! Eric bit and chewed his brain out. Obviously, he now had to sacrifice himself, he, a fucking human, had to protect the second strongest demon in a world full of demons. Why? Because of his fucking reputation, his two-faced act could not, shall not, will not be smeared upon and ruined even more!
Now, Eric had to think about how to shield Nol from those demons who obviously hate him so much they wanted him to disintegrate in acid and evaporate. Eric was a normal editor, who was rich, handsome and perfect in every aspect, however, Eric didn't have any power or strength.
Just squeezing through this mob would kill Eric. What could he do? The only advantage Eric had was that he was an editor and as an editor, he had read a million stories, trashy, shitty, awful, garbage and good ones, meaning the repertoire of plot Eric had in his head was the only thing that helped him.
So, as an editor, if an author wrote this scene what would Eric want the character to do? Of course, thinking about Eric's circumstances and the situation. What would be the thing Eric and the readers would want to see in this scene? What should the outcome and the method be?
Usually, Eric could straight fire out an answer, after all, he was THE most brilliant editor but Eric couldn't at all. Why?
Because this here involved his life! Eric was sure that Nol wouldn't even save Eric. No wait, Nol should because Nol still needed Eric.
Ok, Eric could think a bit clearer now since it was 95% guaranteed that his life wouldn't be lost. The 5%? Hell who knew?
"Haha, what a mess,'' Eric exhaled as he saw how the mob now ganged up on Nol and drove him to a corner. The slurs they shouted at him were getting worse.
Yet for some reason, Eric didn't feel worried about Nol but what surprised him was the fact that Nol did nothing and only accepted all of this hate with a blank face. This was too weird. Oh... Eric had enlightenment. Maybe this was set up!
Nol was testing Eric! To see if Eric truly meant his words of promise! Now that Eric saw through Nol's ploy, the tension, Eric didn't even know he held, all evaporated in an instant. If it was like this, Eric just needed to work his magic and act like he always did.
Easy peasy. Easy peasy. Confident inside yet slightly terrified with a mix of honesty, Eric walked to the crowd who shouted, "Just leave already. Go to your castle and play prince. Boohoo!"
Eric shoved the demon who shouted loudly away with an amicable smile and then started his show.
